    Re: OWNER - a777fan (E420)

Verdict is in. Car is really transformed.

Steve did an amazing job. Wheel is centered, and everything just seems tighter. The car is more composed, and the new tires are quieter. He also took a look around everything else, and it sounds like I need to pick up a new serp belt, as well as address a leaky PS hose between the reservoir and the pump. Much to my surprise, he indicated most of the bushings are still in great shape... so perhaps the alignment will last a bit longer than I was expecting it to. One of the front lower control arm bushings is juuuust starting to go, but he estimated its got quite a bit of life left in it.

Anyway, I can't thank Steve enough. If you are in the Seattle area, and need some work done on your MB, I couldn't recommend him more!

    This stuff arrived this afternoon!

Haha, Thanks for letting me spend the day with Uter! It was a nice change to work on such a well preserved/cared for E420. So many of these I see any more are so abused. You've got yourself a really great car!!

    Re: OWNER - a777fan (E420)

    Interesting observation on pic uploads.

I'll upload a picture to my forum album, and then take the BBCode link and insert it into a post. I'll make the post, and the image will be there.

I'll come back the next day, and the image that I linked is no longer visible and has been corrupted in some way. The image link just turns into 'Attachment'. I have to go back and re-link the image via the provided BBCode link in order to get it to show in the post again...?

Don’t know what the issue is, but I’ll bet it has to do with the code that downloads attached images into the database. I am not in a position at the present time to debug the code, unfortunately.

Short-term solution — don’t upload anything into a photo album. Just attach images to regular posts. We’ll see if that solves it.

Great day for a little cruise around Seward Park and Lake Washington. Rainy to start, and then cleared up nicely!

Nice. It was a nice day indeed. With carpool, I barely drive my car, so, took it for a 70 mile round trip on I-90.

Well. The last few days have been interesting to say the least.

Its been ‘snowing’ here in Seattle for the last few days. This means a mix of rain/ice/actual snow which arrives, melts then re-freezes in dark spots in the roads leaving nice little surprises for drivers to find here and there. This, coupled with a population that can hardly handle their cars on a bright sunny dry day makes for some awesome motoring. (seriously, this is one of the only places on earth that the left lane is guaranteed to be blocked with someone driving the exact same speed as the guy in the right lane, acting completely oblivious to everything going in around them. Made all the more frustrating by the fact that they’ll drive at slightly different speeds inconsistently, giving you a sliver of hope that they will pass or fall behind the right lane enough for you to get around, but don’t worry... it will never happen)

Anyway, our other german made automobile (which will remain nameless, but has an awd system that goes by a very well known brand name) decided to start throwing low oil pressure codes on Thursday afternoon. After confirming that the pressure was in fact low via a gauge, and then discovering that the engineers at this large german company were kind enough to design the oil pan such that it cannot be removed from the car without lowering the subframe i caved and had it towed to the wheeler-stealer. A choice I am already regretting.

I recently was able to downsize the fleet by 1, and since the R32 is in the garage completely torn apart.. that meant the 24 year old MB would have to be pressed into daily service!!! Yikes!

I had yet to change the oil since my purchase and it was due. I took yesterday afternoon to perform my first oil change! I found it quite straightforward. Awesome that the whole job can be completed with 1 8mm and 1 13mm socket! You can tell they were thinking about service when they designed this thing. Something i have never experienced with any wolfsburg or ingolstat product! A few photos, cause why not?

God love the hood service position!

Got the lower panel off and was surprised to find an almost new oil pan!!

I was going to drop it to check for debris and such, but might hold off for a bit

    The lower harness is TOAST!

Didn’t touch it, but i recently ordered all the components from naperville, so i’ll be rebuilding it soon.

Tucked the rags in thanks to a gixxer pro-tip

Popped the lid and took it into the garage for a clean up and to replace the gaskets

Then dropped in the new filter and all its austrian goodness:

Then drained the pan, switched out the copper washer, re-installed and dumped in 8 quarts of Castrol Syntec 5w-40. I plan on doing a 5k interval in this oil.

Went for a drive to check for leaks, then threw the air dam back on and called it a day. 8 qts got me right to the middle of the dipstick!

Oh... i think the FSM is wonked on the drain plug torque spec. 40nm seems awful hefty for that small bolt and pan!!! Am I crazy?

Anyway oil pressure when hot is much better on this oil. Not sure what was in there before. It was supposed to be 5w-40, but where at idle pressure when hot was right around the owners manual minimum of 0.3 bar. Now it hardly drops below 1.

Also some excitement today! Picked up my new Michelin Pilot Sport 4s’s!!! Big big thanks to Jeff0093 who really came through with a great hookup. Definitely reach out to him if you are in the market for a new set of Michelins or BFG’s! These will be mounted up on the monos once i have retrieved them from NorCal!

Ahh. One awesome experience i had this morning that I forgot to relate.

Got up a little early to grab us coffee. Headed out in the 420 since it was the only option (probably would have used it anyway ) get there just fine, grab the brew, head back to the car, unlock the doors, stick key in, turn. NOTHING. I mean absolutely nothing. No buzzer, no slow crank. Dead silent.

After a small meltdown/panic attack at the good luck of having two cars go tits up within two days after selling a perfectly good one... i remembered the battery tray work I did a week or so ago.

Popped the trunk, removed the battery cover and touched the negative terminal , which seated the cable more firmly on the post. Turns out this bozo didn’t tighten the cable bolt, and it had come loose just enough to prevent any current from flowing.

Car started right up. Crisis averted. *phew*

Yep BTDT before. When I first bought my 500E and was driving it cross country to catch a ferry it cut out dead at 70+ mph on a couple of occasions for a second or so at a time and kept on going as if nothing happened. Then when I got the car home in my garage I discovered the PO had simply set both battery terminals on – not tightened up at all. So the car going dead at speed was actually hitting a bump and the battery terminal(s) popping loose. Incredibly it did the car no damage

Nice post. I feel your pain with NW drivers antagonistically hogging the left lane just because they can. I can also relate to that feeling when you turn the key and nothing happens. Not a good one.

You might consider picking up an oil extractor so you don't have to crawl under the car every time you change the oil. They are pretty inexpensive.

I think this is in the Idaho driver training manual, since every car on the road appears to purposely do this. It's like they're trying to encourage road rage.

Bonus! And, your exhaust pipes look immaculate, much better than most IMO. The heat shields & bolts usually have at least a little corrosion.

LOL. Yeah, it's not good, but I've seen waaaaay worse. When there's no insulation visible at all and it's just bare copper everywhere, that is toast.

I think the spec is correct, it's a pretty large diameter bolt thread. I must admit to not using a torque wench on the pan bolt though, but Klink calibrated my arm via Teamviewer so it's all good.

I ***SWEAR*** that was filmed in Maryland. Nowhere on earth are there more incompetent/oblivious drivers riding in the left land. It's incredible.

Maryland is pretty bad as far as left lane drivers, I must admit. But Oregon and Washington are much worse.

Maryland drivers are also SLOW drivers, sort of like drivers in Hawaii.

No one pays attention to the signs on Washington Highways that read "Left lane for passing only".

I was in Barbados a couple weeks ago and everyone is flying down the really crappy roads. I mean very bad roads riddled with pot holes the size of a volkswagen. If you don't drive fast enough they honk there horns and flash their lights. Not a fun to place to drive for us righties, especially if you're from the Pacific Moist West.

Thats great to hear. Steve had similar comments when he did the alignment a week or so ago. The car lived most of its life in CA, with a short stint in the Houston area of all places.

Ok! I just felt i was starting to strip the pan out before i got to 40. Maybe I was just being overly cautious. I ended up giving up on the torque wrench and just snugged it up by hand. Went for a drive and they’re wern’t any leaks, so I think its OK.

I’ve thought about seeing how much it would cost to make more of these signs... and bolt them up on every onramp.

Spent to tonight doing inventory on shipments from mboemparts

New mounts, new coolant tanks and hoses, new thermostat, new serp belt, tranny filter and gasket, updated oil sump pickup and screens, a ton of lower wire harness components and new valve cover gaskets.

One more box tomorrow with the remainder.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Tom at MB classic center for the first time this morning. I didn't receive 3 lower harness parts that I had ordered from MBoemparts, and was curious if they had gone NLA. He confirmed that two of them had...

    Re: OWNER - a777fan (E420)

I’m down in California for the week tending to some family business. Today I had the chance to meet and have lunch with forum member ‘luckymike’. We had become acquainted through the sale of his AMG monos which i bought from him a little over a month ago, but this was the first time we had met.

Mike has two beautiful 126’s, an SEC and SEL, both 1989s, as well as a 1995 E420 in Garnet Red (?) metallic. I had never been in a 126 before, and color me impressed! Nice door thunks, and totally quality materials. Definitely a bit more of a retro feel than the 124, but wow. I LOVED the seatbelt presenters in the SEC. . And the reclining & heater rear bench in the SEL. Very neat!

After lunch with Mike I had to go to the local pick n pull to look for some door cards for my Mom’s old beetle. After nabbing the cards, i scouted the MBs and found two V8 124’s. I didn’t have a ton of time, but nabbed most of the easily nabbable parts i could grab. All the CAN box modules, a ton of the relays and a vacuum pump, plus the passenger side mirror trim in gray.

I love the trips to the pick n pull. Such a fun afternoon digging around and just picking up what you want. I wish we had more V8s in the yards up in Seattle.

They are rare, quite rare. In 5-6 years of going to the yards in the Houston area pretty diligently, I saw a grand total of about 5 E420s and 400Es, and 1-2 "Sportline" pedestrian W124 sedans.

In the Baltimore area (five LKQ pick n' pull yards, vs. three LKQs in the Houston area), I've seen three E420s and 400Es in the past two years.

There's just not many out there, and 124s have generally given way to 210s, 140s, and increasing numbers of 220s in the yards. Unfortunately none of those cars apply to ours, like the somewhat related W201s and W126s do.

I am seeing a LOT more 124 wagons in the wrecking yards in Baltimore than I ever did in Houston -- they seem to have been much more popular in Maryland/DC than in Texas.

Bummer! This is a common problem, unfortunately. Some colors are NLA, and all are $$$ new. A good used one is generally fine, the trick is getting used ones with the center tab (screw cover) intact. Same clip is used on 123, 124, and 201 chassis which helps locate donors. There are cheap Chinese copies on eBay but I don't know how long they last.

I recently faced this issue with my G-wagen, same clips. I found a few at yards so was OK.

TRUCKTEC sells them via amazon or eBay. Dunno the quality but I would not put one on my car. But an option.

Oh! Sorry - I had seen that photo of your invoice. Good work. That's a CRAZY price for said clip.

They are pretty easy to get at wrecking yards, and often still in good condition. I've started grabbing them when I see good ones, particularly for my G-wagen.

I have ordered new ones from MB in the past (as spec'd in the EPC for my G-wagen), and the ones I got from MB were physically larger and different from the ones on the G-wagen, which were the same as the ones used for the 124, 202, early 210 and such. So I've started snagging spares in tan and gray. Need to get some black ones for the E500.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Yes. $34 for some plastic, with integrated ‘wiring’. I’ll definitely be grabbing them in future pick n pull visits

The one that failed literally disintegrated. The plastic had turned into an almost wax like substance. Just crumbled when you touched it!

Yep, I've seen plenty of them crumbled to dust in the wrecking yard. Heat + age.

Fortunately there are alternatives available, both new and used.

    Re: OWNER - a777fan (E420)

So a few additional oddity observations that have cropped up over the last few weeks:

    1. I think my blower regulator is on its way out. The blower has randomly decided to stop responding to PBU commands. As indicated this is intermittent. Luckily it always seems to work first thing in the morning (TG for defrost), but after I drive the short distance to my coffee shop on the way to work, it will not respond after I have re-started the car. Then, a bit later, it will suddenly work. Reading the very helpful threads here leads me to believe that its a) regulator, b) blower fan, c) in line blower fuse, d) PBU. I hear the vacuum pods and A/C condenser respond to PBU commands, so I'm thinking its not that. The intermittency also rules out the fuse in my book. Let me know if you disagree. The blower motor itself seems like it could withstand a low yield nuclear attack, so I'm thinking its not that.

That leaves the regulator. I'll have to investigate this weekend. Luckily being a facelift car, this exchange seems to be massively easier.

    2. Thanks to the intermittent blower in line item 1, I have been given ample opportunity to drive the car with the blower off. Today while driving at low speed in the parking lot, I noticed a very soft clicking noise emanating from the dash area while the car is moving. The clicking has a cadence to it, and is quickly drowned out as you pick up speed. This gives you an idea of how quiet it is. The cadence does not seem to be speed dependent.

    3. There is something in my trunk lid. It sounds like a small piece of plastic that occasionally is dislodged and taps around when I open the lid. This only occurs occasionally though. I have had the trunk liner off twice now, and can't find anything! Its driving me nuts!

IME... an intermittent blower is usually the blower motor itself failing, likely due to worn brushes. Remember that facelift cars use a different blower assembly, so if you buy one, make sure to get the correct part number.

A failed regulator usually results in either a fixed speed that you cannot change, or a dead blower (zero speed). Jono likes to replace both at the same time, but...

The clicking noise may be the heater valve pulsing, if you have the heat on; or it may be the manifold that controls the vacuum pods. Both are normal noises.

    Re: OWNER - a777fan (E420)

It's not all that common for pushbutton units (PBUs) to go out, so I wouldn't go there.

No matter what you do, as a matter of course, just change the 30A strip fuse that controls the blower motor. You should be able to get one at a McFLAPS store ... whatever you do, DO NOT go to your "stealer" as they will charge you like $10 for a $0.50 part. Either that or order it online. In fact, order three or four "just in case."

If you replace the blower motor (and that is the problem), go ahead and spend the money and replace the regulator too. Again, a different part for pre and post-facelift cars, so get the right regulator. If you have an early car, I believe you can get an OEM Behr regulator at a significant discount from the "stealership" prices. If you have a facelift car (as I believe you do), it's KAEhler or Stealer, pick your poison. I don't recommend KAE products, but it's a lot cheaper than the stealer part, albeit IMHO of less quality.

My experience with bad regulator is as gsxr says ... totally inop blower fan.

Also, don't bother buying the replacement motor and changing over the "squirrel cage" fan to the motor. It's a hassle and often times brittle plastic breaks, or it's unbalanced, or there is some other complication. Just get the entire motor/fan assembly.

It's going to be close to $400 in parts, but that's how this job is. Fortunately it's a DIY job labor-wise.

The labor is incremental to replace the regulator when you have the blower motor out, so it's wise to just do the job once and be done with it for 10-15 years. Good opportunity to clean out the top of the heat exchanger too.

I did this job in the days before I started doing HOW-TO articles, unfortunately, so we don't (yet) have a good HOW-TO on it. It would be welcome.

    Behr blower motor link (various vendors, MB #124 820 06 08, list $474): Here ($230) Here ($228) Here ($259) Here ($278) Here ($245)

    KAE blower regulator link (various vendors, MB #124 821 21 51, list $410): Here ($142) Here ($166) Here ($148) Here ($177) Here ($155)

I R&R'd blower motor last summer on my E320 and now, it is intermittent again. This job is not a fun one to do, too many plastic parts to take off. Going to replace with new Behr unit this time.

    Re: OWNER - a777fan (E420)

    a777fan,

I found it no big deal to change the blower motor. Yes, there are a number of plastic parts to remove but I thought it was pretty straightforward.

If you wind up needing to change the regulator, I found it basically impossible to remove the heat sink. I even practiced at a dismantler. You will likely break the plastic surrounding the unit.

My ultimate solution was to follow a tip I got here and simply leave the aluminum heat sink in place. You unscrew the little electrical unit that is bolted to it. Get some thermal paste and attach your new electrical unit (I guess this is actually the regulator) to the old heatsink. Piece of cake.

The noise in your trunk lid? I know this one! One of your liner clips has broken off at some point in the past and the piece is rolling around inside the lid. I have the exact same noise. The piece never seems to move to where I can reach it.

    Re: OWNER - a777fan (E420)

a777fan: +1 Dave & Jerry's comments. Just a few weeks ago I had to replace the regulator in my 94 E320. Symptoms were intermittent blower operation for a week or so followed by no blower function at all. The factory regulator is quite expensive --$506 list. I went with the K.A.E. part at $199 from my local foreign car parts store. Note that the heat sink could not be detached from the wiring harness unlike the factory part that I removed. This made installation of the K.A.E. part a wrestling job to get it under the plastic piece.

Since your is a facelift model its a good time to replace the dust filters. Remember only the lower clip opens--don't try to open the upper one, just slide the upper filter down and out.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Regards,

    Peter Weissman

There's an inexpensive tool specifically for this project:

2014 MB E63S, 2008 Tundra, 2006 Lotus Exige S, 1989 FJ62 Land Cruiser, 1996 Ford Bronco, and some other interesting and not so interesting vehicles.

Thanks to every one for all the insightful replies!

I'll have to dig into the HOW-TO's a bit more to determine what testing I need to do to confirm it is indeed the blower. I should just be able to pull the motor and apply a 12V power source directly, correct?

It would be a little surprising to me if it was the motor, as the car only has 130k on it. I guess time attacks the brushes as well though..? Good to know that reg failures are usually permanent, however.

A real bummer about those prices though. I hate going aftermarket too. And of course if it IS the motor, and i DON'T replace the reg, i'll constantly be assuming I have a ticking time bomb buried in my dash.

Yes! I keep thinking this, but when I remove the liner, I see nothing!!! Your case at least proves that I am not crazy.

It must be. I might just take the liner off and drive around with it till it falls out.

This seems a bit superfluous now that either the blower motor or regulator are going out. But these arrived today care of GVZ!

They’ll need a little bit of love, but should be a fun little project. I’ve always wanted a set. Think they make the sills look a little more special.

Oh... and lemme tell ya. If you ever need anything shipped, the honch is your man. Seriously. The man could open a packaging business. Took me 15 minutes to get into the package and through to the sills!!! Thanks gerry!!!

I happened to have nearly perfect packing and bubble wrap to support.

My signature (as many people have seen) is that I use USPS materials as free packing and box stuffing. Cheap, free and effective. And tape. Lots of tape.

    Re: OWNER - a777fan (E420)

Pretty wet in the PNW today, so I foolishly decided to address a few things on the car. I had just got my order of new copper fuses in the mail, so I wanted to swap those in. Took about 10 minutes, and I didn't even have Uncle Kent's handy dandy pliers!

Old Fuses all nestled in their home for the last 24 years...

    Presto!

    Shiny new fuses in place!

What is the fuse in Position 'D' for? Its not shown on the fuse card.

My E-torx sockets also arrived this week, so I could finally change out the serp belt. Steve (SG-Motorsports) noticed it was starting to crack when he did the alignment a month or two ago. And sure enough, it was!

Not horrible... but starting to go.

    New belt in place:

I've noticed that my Air Pump is a bit rackety when its activated after a cold start. Not sure if this is normal, or if its starting to go:

    Vid idiling with it off:

I then attempted to attack the Blower Motor... but that's a whooole different story.

That belt had some life left in it, but yeah, pretty cheap and easy to replace.

I found that serpentine and V-belts (560SEC) didn't last nearly as long in the heat of Texas as they did when I lived in the PNW. That goes for a lot of rubber parts. The heat and humidity of Houston took its toll.

    Its alllliiveeee!!!

If you’ve seen the how-to i put together, you know it was the damn inline leaf fuse. Honch, Louis, gixxer, you were all correct!!

The bright side is that I know how to take all that stuff apart now.
