Rebuild Tandem power steering pump, resevoir and hoses

I am getting ready to repair leaks on the power steering, hydraulic suspension system on 1992 500E. I would like to rebuild the reservoir and pump and I would like to replace as many of the hoses as possible. I know the low pressure hose between the reservoir and the pump is definite. Here are my questions: What other hoses should be done? It looks like there is a pressure hose from the pump to the right side of the car that is likely a source of leaks. Does anyone have a list of part numbers for the seals on the pump, reservoir and the high pressure lines on the system? Also, in looking at the how to tutorials, I saw one on rebuilding the reservoir, but are there any on the forum for rebuilding the pump? Last, would it make more sense to buy a rebuilt pump or to follow my plan to rebuild it myself. Thanks for any information and recommendations.

Re: Rebuild Tandem power steering pump, resevoir and hoses

There is an extensive HOW-TO article on this very topic:

    https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3902

Also, a couple of other HOW-TO articles of interest:

    https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10020

    https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7516

The "S" hose and the short-hose are mandatory to replace. The high-pressure hose that runs along the frame rail is considerably more difficult to replace, but according to some it CAN be done. I made a cursory attempt and gave up due to the difficulty of the job with the engine in the car. However, there is a technique I believe outlined in the first thread above, from either GSXR or samiam44, that tells how to do the job.

It's also an excellent time to re-seal the cam solenoid on that side (and the other one, potentially) if one or both are leaking ... as well as to change out the caps and rotors "while you're in there."

The EPC should provide the part numbers for the relevant hoses, gaskets, seals, and filters.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

You shouldn't need to replace any of the high-pressure hoses, those rarely leak - I've never heard of anyone having to replace one.

The low pressure hoses always like to leak; there are 2 for the SLS (one at the bottom of the reservoir, one at the inlet to the pump) and 2 for the power steering (the S-hose, and the hidden one along the frame rail). If possible, replace all 4.

And if you're going that far anyway, inspect the steering box. If there is any sign of leakage from the box itself, it's almost always from the output shaft... parts are cheap, labor isn't fun, How-To writeup is here:

I remember how good the referenced how-to was when I resealed the tandem on my 036. You are in good hands here....

Thanks Gerry. I will review the links you included. I figured there were how to articles I just didn't find. I appreciate that you sent them.

GSXR, Thanks for the recommendations. I will focus on the low pressure lines as well as the power steering box. I am looking forward to eliminating the leaks!

Thanks baviking1. It is good to know that the how-to references on the pump reseal are so good.
