    FS: 1993 500E, 040 Black/Black, 103k mile, $13k (Palo Alto, CA)

    Hi,

I'm selling my 1993 500E (VIN WDBEA36E5PB979499) which is currently located in Palo Alto, CA. I'm asking $13K. This car has a Salvage title, hence the price. I know that's a turn-off for a lot of people, but if you're still interested read on.

It's a great car and I love it, but I just don't drive it. I work in CA but pretty much live in Portland OR and so it doesn't get a lot of attention. It's in great shape, with a couple of minor issues, but it would make a fine daily driver. I bought it in September, 2007 with 92,114 miles, and it's currently up to 103,398. The reason for the Salvage title was apparently a hit to the right front fender, but that was all repaired before I bought the car.

    The biggest current issues are:
    - SRS light is on. This started a couple of months ago
    - The transmission flares a bit between first and second and was this way when I bought it. The fluid has been replaced, and it's not bad, but noticeable
    - Temperature dash LCD display is starting to bleed
    - Lower front air dam has a crack
    - Headliner is saggy

The car had been sitting for awhile when I bought it, so I did do some work to get it in shape. It's an original 040 car and the paint was redone in 2007. It's not showroom quality, but it's in very good condition. Other things in no particular order:

    - Fifteen 52 17" x 8" wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires (done at 102970 miles. The original wheels are available but in Portland, more on that below)
    - Disconnected the alarm system: before this the turn signals and headlights would occasionally flash randomly after locking the doors
    - New starter
    - New battery, January 2014 (under battery tender since)
    - New window tint
    - New engine and transmission mounts
    - Replaced the driver's side tie rod
    - Replaced the rear strut bushings
    - New AC/climate control unit
    - Zapco subwoofer and amp, new stereo wiring everywhere, Rainbow speakers in the back, and Jehnert speakers with door panels in the front
    - Euro headlights
    - New throttle body actuator
    - Replaced upper and lower wiring harness

    More pictures are here:
    https://merc500e.weebly.com/

As mentioned above, the car is in Palo Alto but the original wheels are in Portland. If you're interested in the original wheels we could negotiate something. I go back and forth once a month, and so I apologize if I can't show it to you right away!

If interested, send me an email at mtalley0@gmail.com
    Thanks

    Hi Jono,

Thanks, it really is a nice car. The head unit is an old Pioneer P800PRS which I got in 2008. What I really love about it is its automatic setup, which calibrates the time delays and levels for all the speakers. It's a little antiquated in terms of its inputs, but it sounds great.

The front setup is the Jehnert system, which is here:
    http://www.jehnert.de/en/shop/doorbo...y-soundsystem/

The great thing about this is that the replacement doorboards are much nicer than the originals. On the back deck is a custom subwoofer setup, so all in all it's great system.

Wow - Jehnert fronts with the Zapco (12"?) sub in the rear deck, I bet that sounds impressive. Would love to hear it!

Yeah, I got the Jehnert idea from this forum back in 2009. Maybe it was you? If so, thanks, it really is a wonderful setup. I love the door panels, they're so much better than the originals!

Let me know if the attached work for you. The sub install was done by a shop in Portland who also made the grill. They did really nice work.

Nice clean install on the sound system. Car appears to be in great shape with low miles. This should not last long. Good luck with the sale.

The shop was Oregon Sound Choice, right at the base of the Ross Island bridge on the east side. Doesn't look like they're there anymore, but their old website, oregonsoundchoice.com redirects to www.audio-fx.com on 82nd. If you talk to them ask for Rich Clapp, he did the work for me and another friend of mine.

    good looking 500!

Is there a story regarding the steering wheel? It looks like it was replaced at some point with an original (old style) e-class wheel and bag?

Also, it appears like the center console was re-configured after the stereo install by removing the fader switch and re-locating the dome light switch. Is it functional there? or just filling the old hole? If its functional, what took its spot on the upper console?

I'd assume the steering wheel change (and missing decals on the upper radiator support) is related to the salvage title. But the price reflects it, IMO.

    Hi,

Yeah, as gsxr says, the steering wheel change was before my time. I got the car originally from Robert Fenton in San Rafael. Robert's been mentioned on the thread before, for example in this post:

    https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5777

He had several salvaged 500Es, and I think he did a lot of mixing and matching.

Good catch too on the the center console, that had kind of slipped my mind. I pulled all the old wiring out when I redid the stereo, and I decided to use that space for an antenna switch. The head unit I have now always wants to put the antenna up regardless of the input, and because I was never using the radio I thought it would be nice to choose when I wanted the antenna to come up, if at all. My choices of switches were limited (or at least that's all I could find), and so I ended up using a dome light switch. It does bother me, but it could easily be modified.

    Thanks,
    Marc
