    WTB: 500E Speedometer

Hi guys, after getting my 500E this summer and driving across the US from Salt Lake City to Boston and then to Des Moines, I've noticed that my cluster is not original, probably a 400E cluster from research since it does not have the ASR window, and the speed reads a bit higher than the GPS speed.
As a college student, this increased speed (and thus mileage) displayed by the gauge is driving up my insurance costs and I'd like to lower it by submitting my true mileage driven which is definitely under the 7,500 mile limit.

Does anyone have a spare 500E cluster sitting around that they'll be willing to part with? Otherwise, does buying this part "SPEEDOMETER HEAD - MERCEDES-BENZ (124-542-02-69)" and swapping out the speedometer work to make the speed and odometer accurate? Could swapping out some odometer gears from the 400E to the 500E gears work too? Thanks!!

If the speedometer and odometer are both reading the same percentage higher, all you need is a digital conversion box (YellowBox / Yellr.com, or Dakota Digital) to adjust the readings. Make sure the converter is designed for 2-wire inductive sensors.

I've looked into that but I don't really want to cut any wires on the harness, they're already expensive as it is. Would buying this this part for $180 and swapping it with the current 400E speedo work?

You only have to cut 1 wire behind the cluster, and it can be spliced back together in the future if needed. For power & ground you can use taps which do not require cutting. It's really not a big deal. No need to touch anything under the car. I have the YellowBox in two cars, it's small enough to tuck behind the cluster.

That unit is NLA... both the 400E and 500E clusters are NLA. Remember, the vast majority of MB part vendor websites are not updated when parts are discontinued / NLA. They'll let you place the order and then it will be cancelled a few days later.

I have posted pictures of the entire cluster I have with the part numbers. I still have it and will be happy to take pictures and provide them if you are interested

Hi all, thanks for your replies! Sorry for not keeping you guys updated, school has been really hectic!

Do you think getting the appropriate 500E gearing for the odometer and swapping the 400E gearing out would fix the higher mileage reading? I don't really mind the higher indicated speed for now as it keeps me from actually speeding!

    Re: WTB: 500E Speedometer

The plastic gear which is different inside the speedometer / odometer assembly, for different gear ratios, is not available for purchase separately. So that is not an option.

Can you post a photo of your existing instrument cluster?
