Annual property tax cost for your E500E?

I know not everyone has to pay property taxes on their cars...here in Connecticut it is a big revenue for our poorly run state, and our taxes are pretty high compared to other states; but the state services we receive are also pretty good. Especially if you are on welfare !

Not that owning a 500E helps CT's economy much....as mine is registered as a 'Classic' vehicle....my total outlay was a whopping $19.50 for 2017. But the CLK63, for example...that cost me close to $1000 with a regular plate and registration.

Just curious to as what, if any, the other owners need to cough up for their E500E taxes.

    Re: Property taxes?

In TX, the price of around $72 for registration drops about 50 or so after 25 years if you register as a Historical vehicle, and that last 2 years rather than annual. The state smog is $7 for cars 25 years old or older, but over that its around $65. Car insurance is higher due to uninsured drivers, under insured or unlicensed drivers, especially in the large cities where undocumented drivers tend to dwell or work. So price of ownership as a result are pretty even, GVZ mentioned before that our insurance rates are pretty high in another thread. But removing that, just the porking from the registration and smog aka ownership, its minimal and down right cheap after 25 years of age.

    Re: Property taxes?

Here in Northern Ireland (UK) we pay ‘Vehicle Excise Duty’ which is a Tax on cars. It is based around the car’s year, engine size and CO2 emissions. There are many tiers but the main advantage to older / classic Car Tax is there are only 2x bands. Under 1549 CC or Over 1549 CC

So my 500E costs £245 ($331 USD) per year in Tax if registered on the road. The only consolation being that someone running a 1.6 Pinto is paying the same duty as my 5L V8

The Fuel itself is also taxed at the pump. Approx +58p per liter Tax + 20% VAT applied on top. (Around $3USD Tax per US Gallon QTY of Fuel – before VAT)

Southern Ireland Excise Duty is many multiples of the figures above - 1809 Euro (2170 USD) per year for over 3,001cc!

    Re: Property taxes?

Do you Texans have to pay property taxes on cars tho?

Once a year they send a bill for all our cars based on where the cars are housed/garaged, we send a check to our town (each town has a different mill rate)....so my bud 20 miles away in another town might pay, say, $22.75 for his "Classic' regged 500E.

When I lived in Texas (late 1980s) ...I didn't have a car so I don't know ! LOL I lived on Jack Warren's ranch in Tomball...and drove one of his Ford F350s when I left the property.

In my Virginia county, a 1994 E500 would be assessed at ~$3000, resulting in annual person property tax bill of under $100. Plus $25 for the windshield tax sticker. Plus $40 for DMV registration.

If you had a 1992 500E, you would be exempt from paying personal property tax, due to the vehicle being 25 years old. And if you opted for "Antique" plates, you would only pay a one-time $50 DMV registration fee. AND avoid annual state safety inspections.

Your CLK63 would be assessed at ~$10000 value. which would result in around $250 in annual taxes. Plus sticker, plates, and annual inspection fees.

In general, Virginia hits residents with newer, high value cars the hardest. There is tax relief which is phased out after the first $20000 in value.

Our two daily drivers each incur well over $2000 annual taxes. When new, they were closer to $4K each per year.

I'm pretty-much done with new cars. Too much to insure. Taxes are brutal. Speed has lost its appeal. I can go as fast as I want on the track.

    Re: Property taxes?

Schhhhhh! Not so loud! The Swedish government hasn't figured this out yet. As living in one of the heaviest taxed countries in the world, you could think the politicians were satisfied. But as we all know, there's no such politician. But so far, there's no property tax on vehicles.

We pay yearly road tax, and there's lots of variations depending on curb weight, emissions, model year etc. My E420 is a 1994, so it's tax is based on the old curb weight system. That means there is a tax per pound of car. I pay about $350 per year. A 1994 E200 is $300 per year. So that's good. For newer cars you pay for emissions, so then it gets worse owning a V8.

When a car is 30 years old it is tax exempt. You just pay $5 per year to keep it registered, and you only have to do MOT every other year. When a car is 50 years old, it's MOT exempt. One last MOT, and then never again.

Sweden is hoping that we all buy electric cars, so they're tax exempt too. I'm so very curious on which new taxes they'll have to invent when a; we all drive electric cars, b; we don't buy any fuel. Two really big tax incomes for the government. I bet electricity will be taxed way higher, and road tax will be implemented on electric cars. What a boring future. Smartphone appliances that drives themselves. I hope that I don't live long enough to see gas powered cars and driving yourself banned. Dystopia indeed.

No no no... electrical driven vehicles exemt, well, not for long, remember what happened to the solar panels, no? NO ONE is "getting away"
Buy one Z-lev or low-lev, and I think youre in for a surprise, in the future. Yeah even the bicycles may be taxed, somewhat.

I feel for our fellow owners in Scandinavia, taxing is out of control..I guess the only thing they are not paying tax for is the air that hits the car when driving
in contrast..nearly all middle east countries have zero road tax, zero to $30 annual inspection and registration fee and no tax of fuel.

Haha yea maybe a government issued "Air Intake Device System" (AIDS) that they could read via the "Integrated Data Information Onboard Transmitter System" (IDIOTS).

That's what I fear tbh, cars monitored by the government/companies. I will not buy a car with built in internet connection, OTA updates and so on. The purpose of the car is that it's relatively free from the world. As long as you have fuel, it runs.

I'm just waiting for when somebody comes with the excuse when they're late for work "Sorry guys, but the car didn't start this morning, my wifi was down, I had to tether it to my Iphone, can you imagine!?!". Or, "The previous owner didn't pay his road tax, so now I can't start the car until it's been paid". Scary.

The car is about freedom from all this. It goes when you turn the key, nothing else.

    Hello,
The same Skandinavian story continues in Finland. Annual tax for my 500E is 347€ / $415. The base for older car is gross weight.
Newer cars pay tax based on Co2 emission, if w124 500E would be charged accoringly the incvoice would 540€ / $645!

We hold our Breath and do not rule ANYTHING out, we were now for 2018 taxed a little more for energy consumtion, fuel
and electrical power. It takes a lot to run a country with the Worlds first and only "feminist regime" you have to understand...

Luckly we have temporary scrapping fee in this side of golf. If drive my old car to scrapping yard I'll get extra 1500€ discount when buying new low emisison car. Should I use my 500E for that since that kind of old cars with high fuel consumption they would like get out from our roads...

Well, then again, what imprint does a, for ex. 500ed have, driven very little? Practically nothing, in it self a very environmentally friendly car..

Re: Annual property tax cost for your E500E?

This is one of my major gripes with the policy "scrap all existing cars, buy new electric". I'm probably more environmentally friendly keeping older cars alive. They've already paid most of their price to mother nature.

My 14 year old DD which I'm keeping alive is not exhaust free, but it's a small engine with cats and a moderate petrol consumption. And there's no need for a gigantic lithium battery pack to be produced, demanding tons of power, mining and what not.

Any new car requires lots of energy and resources to be produced.

I'm not saying that electric cars are bad, but in this throwaway society, maybe we should at least use up the things we already made?

I just think it's stupid to punish us who keeps older cars alive. New new new, that's the mantra.

I'm fine with that, if they just could be honest about it instead of hiding behind the environment.

I want to add also, I don't hate new cars. I just don't understand why we all need a brand new one every other or third year.

California was around $100.00 last annual registration but I think Governor Moonbeam just doubled the auto registration along with a 12% gas tax increase. I won’t know for sure until I pay my registration.

    NO property tax on cars.

That may explan why there was odd EGAS box installed in my 500E which had German plates before arrived to Finland. I removed the box because useless here and connection plugs had BMW marking
Off the topic but do you know the true function of that box.

Re: Annual property tax cost for your E500E?

Being an oldtimer (+25 years old, now to become 30 years) here in Belgium it is 36€ annual tax, and 15€ Insurance in my case. With my insurance the first oldtimer is 90€, and all the others you have are 15€. Only thing we can't do with it is home-work travel. But working at a dealership always makes for a good excuse (maintenance etc )

For e.g. an 1993-1995 E500 this would be one time 2178€ for bringing it on the road, and annual tax 4528€. So before you have driven 1 meter that is 6706€. And ofcourse higher Insurance.
That's why you will almost NEVER see a 500E/E500 over here on normal plates instead of oldtimer plates.

Re: Annual property tax cost for your E500E?

Believe it or not - it's close to zero property tax on cars here in Morepay!

Or more correct, the gvnmnt run their own list value on cars which is very low, next is that value added to the tax payers total assets. The total assets minus total debt, minus a tax-free amount - gives the net basis subject to property tax. The property tax is at max 0,85%. While the wealthy people is screaming for any nickel leaving their wallet, the regular man in the street is buried in debt due to a crazy cost level, and will hardly experience property tax during their life.

Income tax, import tax, VAT, road tax etc.. is a different story, but I'm not starting at that. But it's a paradox that Norway rated among the richest nations in the world, sitting on a great part of the global oil & gas resources, has to import their own oil/petrol. Next the gvnmnt add up an astronomic import tax before it's sold to the citizens. And the oil is even not imported physically, but landed at the Norwegian oil refineries along the coastline, and processed by Norwegian tax paying employees.

Venezuela has the cheapest petrol prices in the world, second is either Iran or Iraq. Kuwait is now the cheapest in the Gulf.

I don't think its as advertised, cause we heard the same about other countries at one point (e.g communist china) ... they turned out to be the biggest market for luxury goods in the world and the biggest lenders! .. while everyone else is broke :S .. just my 2c.

I just posted this the other day in my PWNER thread.

Maryland doesn't charge an annual property tax on cars (though I hear that Virginia has something like that?!? but maybe that's for boats and such only). We just pay for new tabs every two years, though when you bring a car into Maryland from out of state, you pay a one-time excise tax (cheap for older cars) and you have to pay for a new MD title, plates, registration, tabs, and one-time safety inspection for non-historic cars). Historic cars = no safety inspection. I also registered my E500 with a "Historic" MD plate.

    • Sales tax -- 6.0% in Anne Arundel County, MD compared to 8.25% in Montgomery County, TX
    • Homeowner's insurance -- approximately 60% of that paid in Texas, with double the actual coverage amount
    • Automobile insurance -- approximately 30% higher in MD than that paid in Texas (difference of approximately $1,000), though coverage is double the amount, and includes 5 vehicles
    • Motorcycle insurance -- 50% less in MD than in TX, with same insurance company (Safeco) and despite double the coverage amount in Maryland
    • Umbrella insurance -- Approximately 40% less in Maryland than in TX, despite double the coverage amount
    • State income tax -- 6.46% of income in Maryland; zero income tax collected in Texas
    • Excise tax for vehicles -- Maryland requires one-time, mandatory excise tax for all incoming vehicles. Each of my vehicles was $39; newer vehicles based on current book value of vehicle. Texas -- no excise tax for incoming vehicles. Excise tax included in below category of "Vehicle license registration".
    • Vehicle license registration -- initial vehicle license (includes new MD title, excise tax paid, plates, registration, etc.) ~$300 in Maryland for 2 years ($250 for historic vehicles); ongoing MD registration renewal approximately $100/2 years regular plate, $50/2 years historic plate; Texas approximately $120 per vehicle regular plate per year including annual mandatory state inspection.
    • State vehicle inspection -- MD requires extremely comprehensive, one-time $80 inspection for all incoming vehicles to get regular plates; no inspection required for vehicles getting historic plates. TX -- mandatory annual safety inspection approximately $35-40 per vehicle per year; $13 for motorcycles.

    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Gerry

We hold our Breath and do not rule ANYTHING out, we were now for 2018 taxed a little more for energy consumtion, fuel
and electrical power. It takes a lot to run a country with the Worlds first and only "feminist regime" you have to understand...
Up until very recently here in Maryland (when a Republican governor named Larry Hogan was voted in, the previous Democratic governor named Martin O'Malley ... yes the same guy who failed at running for President against Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders) they had a "Rain Tax," which was where people were taxed based on the square footage of their property/driveway/roof and how much annual rain fell onto it. O'Malley passed the tax ... the only one of its kind in the US, and Hogan repealed it after he was elected in this Democrat-majority state.

And at the link above, that is the dome of the Maryland Statehouse. Not only the oldest US state capitol building in continuous use (since 1772), but also the largest wooden dome in the US that is built without using nails. And if you drive only 1 minute from my house, you can see it in the distance

Gerry, I didn't know you left Texas for Maryland. Guess I am not on the site enough since I am between cars.

In Florida we pay for a tag, about $50 less after the car is 20 years old. Gas tax is about 50 cents a gallon. But no tax on the car. My daughter complains every year when she has to pay tax on her 2006 Jetta diesel 5 speed.

Re: Annual property tax cost for your E500E?

It’s quite recent — end of October this year. Florida is known, like Texas, as being one of the “lower tax” states. I’m just happy that Maryland isn’t anywhere up there like the New England states, New York, Illinois, Oregon, and California.
