    OWNER - Trofim4uk

Hello fellow 500e owners! My name is Andrey and here is a little background on me: been a Mercedes enthusiast for a while now and not new to this. My past cars were 95 C280, 01 Clk430, 95 e320 (current daily), 98 CL500 and 98 C43 AMG. I have a little business aside from my daily grind (literally) which is import wheels, specifically for Mercedes and parts through few friends around the globe. More so from Japan. It helped me build up knowledge and experience over the last few years to where I can easily find, buy and shipped here without issues.

I recently acquired a late 91 500e in brilliant silver with black leather. 114k km or about 70K miles. Data card shows it was an Italy order but was exported to Japan sometime in 2002. It looks like it received a facelift and looks to be very clean and tidy. Currently still in Japan but will soon be on the way to the States, landing in port of Tacoma WA and then down to Clackamas OR. From the pictures it looks like it was well maintained and kept in the garage. Maintenance tags visible on the radiator support along with updates Samco coolant hoses.

If anyone know or can get any more info on the car please DM me with details. Here is the VIN: WDB1240361B681376

Here are some pictures that I have of the car as on right now, will have more next week. I'm going to try and find a set of Neez euro 6 18" wheels for it to give it a more aggressive look!

    Congrats on the score!

Here is the datacard for your VIN:
    https://www.datamb.com/vin/zrL6K2OwKLR2qJpM5

This car was built in Dec-1991, which would be mid-1992 production for USA model years. No heated seats, the datacard mentions "on board computer" but I don't see that in the photos. You'll need to check the headlight lenses and see if they are for left-hand traffic (Japan/UK) or right-hand traffic (USA). New lenses are available but the reflectors are different, hopefully the part number sticker is still attached to the headlamps so you can figure out if they are the original Italian delivery items or not.

    BTW, welcome to the forum!

It is quite a looker! And welcome!

When I last checked 12 months ago, you could still buy new Neez Euro-Six wheels directly from Japan. Good Luck with this next hunt and please let us know how it goes.

Is that $2800 EACH WHEEL or is that a for a set?

If that's for EACH WHEEL then that price is insane. If that's for a set, then that's cheap!

What size / style is this for? I can't afford $3500/set but I bet there are a few folks who would prefer these brand new vs a set of questionably-refurbed AMG multi-piecers!

Another point to consider is these are essentially an 18" equivalent of the EVO II design which maxed out at 17". Since the EVO IIs are NLA (we believe), sets will continue to go up in price. A diamond finish set can set one back $2200 (and may still require refinishing).

Robert, IIRC a different thread indicated the painted-silver Evos may be available again, but over $2k, and as you mentioned would not be technically accurate on the 036. Converting a new painted set to machined / diamond finsh would put the final price up into Neez territory, at which point I'd take the Neez (which are also wider and lighter!).

If someone buys a set of Neez, try to figure out the sizes that are avail. Is it

    F: 18x9.0 ET+26
    R: 18x9.5 ET+28
    ballseat

    or is it:

    Size: 18x8.5 ET+23 front 18x9.5 ET+25 rear
    cone seat

    Dave -

You're right. I actually purchased a set of 4 diamond finish and then had a painted EVO converted to diamond finish for the spare. The cost for that wheel finish conversion alone was $160. Buying a set of 4 and refinishing them gets you into brand new Neez territory with a nicer dimensional wheel for the 036.

UPDATE: car turns over but wont fire up. both fuel pumps are toast along with the green relay that under the seat. my guy ordered the replacements so will update monday. have to get it running to before sail as the shipping cost will drastically increase if the car cant drive.

If the car sat a long time, the dead fuel pumps are not a surprise. However, the green relay under the seat ALMOST never fails. If the relay is not engaging, check the LH module and BM/GM which powers the LH. The LH module is what triggers the relay for ~2 seconds when the key is turned on (and, IIRC, while the starter is cranking the engine).

BM/GM is Basic Module / General Module. It is the power supply for the other modules in the CAN box (computer module box). There are 3 or 4 fuses in the BM / GM which should be checked as well. Also would not hurt to remove each module and make sure all the contacts are clean and dry. And of course checking the simple things like making sure the batter terminals are tight, especially the small 10mm hex nut on the positive battery terminal which has the wire attached that is a separate power feed to the computer modules.

UPDATE: replaced the green fuel pump relay and pumps. clicks when trying to start but doesnt fire up. sounds like the LH module is bad. bought another used LH module and will see if that helps.

Looks like refinished BEM, note the rounded edges on the ashtray. But in the other photo, the shifter wood looks like walnut! Gotta be a camera / lighting anomaly... however, looking at other photos in earlier posts, perhaps the car has a mix of BEM and walnut?

After a long wait she finally home! She's a 1992 with a facelift, 114K km (71K mi), Italian original delivery as some labels are in italian. time to get it sorted out. this 500E sat in a wealthy guys' mansion storage for about 7 years in Japan but now she is here in Oregon! trailered it home from the port of Tacoma. Tires are 15 years old haha so didn't want to risk driving freeway 2.5 hours. fuel pump is acting up but started up initially at the port and was able to drive to customs to get it cleared. gas is also old so have to drain the tank or pump it out (it really stinks) and put in a new fuel filter. its a clean car overall! Will post more pics once i get her sorted up a bit. the other W124 is my 95 daily 320.

    Andrey,

Congrats on getting your beauty home in one piece. After almost 4 months of anxiety pangs you at least don’t to worry about the ship sinking or some other disaster.

It looks like you have a nice copy to work with. After setting for 7 years you have plenty to keep yourself busy and get her up to snuff. A wise choice not to drive on the old rubber. I did that once on a 1964 220seb Euro Coupe I purchased. It had been setting 10 years. I threw most of the tread off in a six mile drive. Also you will have to go thru the brakes as well. I’m sure you already know this so i’ll shut up.

Since Maui is practically your neighbor you have a good resource for info.

    BTW, Welcome to the Board!!

Good Luck w/ your new ride!!
    Terry

Thank you! yeah it needs wear and tear items replaced but runs strong and shifts good so im happy about that. some people on MB fanatics FB page were a bit anal about the car not having the side markers on fenders but im not concerned, i like the clean look! as for tires all just end up buying 18" wheels.

Uh, I may be wrong, but I think the side markers were only required for Japan and UK delivery cars? Maybe a few other countries?

Since your car was originally delivered to Italy, it may not have the markers. Check out the datacard link back in post #5 which also confirms original Italian delivery.

EDIT: Datacard does show code 341 so I think it did originally have the additional blinkers on the front fenders. Odd they were removed, especially since the car went to Japan.

so... the fuel pump was making a lot of noise and for a good reason. when i disconnected the tank to pump line thick black jelly came out... it got sucked up into the first pump and halfway up the metal tube that connects into the second one. last time i turned the key the pumps werent coming on at all, maybe burned out? gonna have to test/clean or replace along with the filter. prob gonna have to take the tank out and rinse it with something to get all the jelly out. any helpful suggestions would be appreciated!
also saw that the car is sitting on some yellow springs called X Springs. will post pics possibly tomo

    Re: OWNER - Trofim4uk

The tank has a bowl in the center, to prevent fuel sloshing away from the pickup. You'll have to make sure it's completely rinsed out. Might be best to remove the tank and take it to a local fuel tank shop to be professionally cleaned out, unless you are lucky and the goo dissolved with fresh gas sloshed around. Once the tank is out, remove the level sender and you can look inside with a flashlight. And while it's out, buy a new hose from the tank to the fuel pump inlet... the old one will be hard as a rock, and may be cracked too. Might want to replace the strainer too... and O-rings for strainer & sender.

Photo attached from a 260E, the 036 tank should be roughly similar, although I think there's a top on the plastic bowl so you can't see the strainer inside.

Bummer about the problem! Wonder what caused the black goo?

EDIT: If there is any smell of gasoline inside the car, the tank may have micro-cracks that are nearly impossible to locate. This is generally accompanied by a partial tank collapse (sucked inward slightly), usually due to plugged venting. In this case, the tank must be replaced. In a pinch you could use a standard 70L tank from any 124 sedan (easily available from your local junkyard, or Craigslist)... but a replacement 90L tank will be tougher to locate. The 1995 E300 diesel uses the same 90L tank, but that and the 036 are the only donors. You don't want to know the price of a new one.
