I enjoy being a bit provocative (PC-speak for hinged trolling) and prompting discussion and conversations about the market and such. I agree that in this over-inflated market, where people have been feeling richer because of their investment portfolios, prices have been climbing and I too had it pegged at around $65-75K all-in.

The number of buyers at that price level, however, is exceedingly small. But they are out there....

Love it. So true. I saw 600Eric's car in Houston several times before he bought it, and it was as is typical as the cars you often see for sale on this site. I.E. a car that had good bones, and that generally had been well taken care of in many of its years, but one that had suffered from some neglect (I believe it was more from disinterest of the PO to 600Eric than monetary/financial) and had a good $15K of deferred maintenance to bring back to solid driver status.

600Eric had other plans, as we all know He got a good deal on the base car he used for his project, in the exact color combo he wanted, IMHO.

I will be glued to ebay to see the final few seconds of bidding. If someone is willing to pay $78k they are willing to part with a few more thou. I suspect this will be a record for a non-celeb owned E500, aside from new of course.

I was initially thinking $50-60K, when I first contacted the owner. Then I figured maybe $65K would be enough to get the car. But now is looks like it's going to take $80-85K to secure her.

I would have definitely gone for her at $65K, but at $80k-plus, I think I'm out of the running.

I think I'll take Gerry's advice and go for something around $40K. This certainly has been an excellent thread for learning. Thank you to all contributors. If Gerry is correct, we should start to see more E500E sellers in the market later this year, around the same time I'll be in a position to pounce. I'm looking forward to it.

And maybe you’ll even have the obsolete stereo and phone already removed for you, as well as the passenger door pocket panel repaired, a new coolant reservoir and maybe even new front seat covers.

    Jokes.

    Happy hunting.

Wow, there were approx 10 bids in last minute. Bidding ended at $79.8k. Reserve was not met.

I wonder if seller will sell or relist?

This car would not have been well bought at anything much above $60K.

That said, there are plenty of folks out there with too much money.

I’d MUCH rather have two $40K cars with 50K miles on them than one $80K car with 23K on it.

Steve, it would have been great for this to have gone to you, but i think you’re making the right decision to bow out at this price point.

The longer the listing remains on eBay, the lower the selling price will be, IMO. Which is contrary to fundamental logic, but big money would have swept in already.

Remember everybody, as aerowagon (on BringaTrailer - https://bringatrailer.com/2018/03/02...des-benz-e500/) so eloquently said, “They are the same car as a standard w124 but in more limited numbers, and with a bigger engine…”

    Nothing special here. Move along!

FYI, sounds like the car is going to sell quite quickly post auction. We'll see. I'll certainly be watching, and plan to stay in touch with the owner. Good guy.

Thanks for the nice comments. I would have loved to have had this car. For me, it's an emotional decision, not necessarily a financial one. $65K was within my comfort zone, but $80K-plus is outside it. No rhyme or reason, just gut.

As I mentioned, I'll stay in touch with the owner. You never know what's going to happen. In the meantime, I'm shopping for a Cabrio and hope to find one as nice as the NJ E320 I recently picked up. Hopefully, I'll be able to secure my future E500E sometime in the next 12-months.

Awww nuts, I didn't realize this was a PRIVATE auction. I hate those. You can't tell how many different bidders were engaged in the war. Could have been only 2 people, with #3 and the rest all bowing out at $60k... no way to tell unless the seller shares the info, which apparently he is unwilling to do.

I don't understand the point of a private auction anymore since eBay made all bidder anonymous (only showing their feedback amount).

The end result of this auction has aroused my suspicion. All the bids were kept private, I find it VERY interesting that the final bid was $200 shy of $80k . Something feels off to me, but I could be wrong.

I got into collecting rare bourbons in early 2000's....everything was cheap! bottles of Van Winkle, Stagg or Hirsch for $30-$40...We were a small group of online bourbon geeks that ran around collecting and buying up the small batch specialty bottlings and also old bottles off liquor store shelves that we knew were made in the 60's or whatnot. We drank them and geeked out about the bottle markings and all the history of now defunct distilleries.

then came the resurgence and interest by the general public and.....prices went stratospheric in a matter of about 2 years. Now those $30-$50 same bottles were selling for $200-1000. Having already tasted and bought so many good bourbons at such low prices I lost almost all interest when prices went up. No way was I going to buy bottles at such inflated prices when I had been buying them at a fraction of the price....but that is where the prices went and they stayed there. And they've not came back down. Sometimes certain segments of collector goods hit a blip and the market rises to never return to previous times. I fear for the older MB gearheads here that maybe that is the case we are seeing...and I can understand that cars that used to sell for 15-20k are now double seems ridiculous to them. But when the market demand speaks it sets the market. Certainly not a bad time to seek out either a MB car you want or squirrel away as many parts as you can. You early collectors here are lucky to have the foresight and love of the cars to buy them cheap...but are later adopters any less enthusiastic because they will pay up for the experience?

No need to fear. I'd say that most of the "old guard" gearheads here are probably happy that their purchases are above water ... and that they've been able to enjoy driving them with no depreciation over the years.

I also don't think there are that many pure "collectors" on this site who squirrel their cars away for pure speculation/investment/garage bauble purposes -- the vast majority of folks are drivers who like to drive and enjoy their cars to varying levels. Sure, some folks (like me) use their cars sparingly (although I used mine for years as a daily driver), but most folks do enjoy their cars for what they were made for.

There are far better MBs out there for speculators, IMHO...my money right now looking ahead for the next 10 years is on high-end R129s, high-end R107s, A124s, rare/pristine C126s, and so forth. The 190SLs, W111/112 cabrios, Adenauers, Grand 600s, 6.3s, Pagodas, etc. have been well run-up in the market over the past 10-15 years. They'll continue to appreciate, but perhaps (with the exception of Gullwings) at reduced rates, in my opinion, in the coming years. They've already leveled off a fair bit (and in some cases even come back down a bit) from appreciation rates even of the past 5 years.

The E500E will appreciate, but it will always be a bit of an outlier for many reasons well-discussed here. As I've said for years, the E500E will mirror the 300SEL 6.3 market...it's just somewhat behind on the curve due to being 20 years newer.

Absolutely nothing wrong with "later adopters" and no one looks down on them. Au contraire.... later adopters are welcomed into the fold as they are the enthusiastic, new caretakers of the breed. One's comfort level and price point (for entry and/or exit) is purely a personal decision.

I think what's more important than money, is passion. The "old guard" here is very very passionate for the E500E. Guys like Glen, captruff, Jimbo, GSXR, Jono, 500AMM, taxi driver, and others carry the flame deep in their hearts for the E500E and have for 10-20 years.

IMHO you have nothing, if you don't have passion. However rich or poor one is, it's passion that matters.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

No more action on this car? Is it back to oblivion where it came from?

On $79.8K What is the buyers/sellers premium thru e-Bay? That could have put the brakes on the sale.

Maybe Owner made deal on the side??

Just wondering when we will see an actual sale consummated for the BIG BUCKS!!

i do not think car sold. Reserve was $81k.

i am now in touch with owner via email as he knows i am a serious buyer, but unable to pull trigger until after Aug.

i think his most serious buyer outside of ebay was from Israel, but he stopped hard at $75k.

i assume i will hear from owner if anything happens, and i will post.

IMO $81K is a weird reserve. Would have expected a round number like $80K or $85K.

I REALLY hate to burst your bubble, but it is a LONG TIME between now and September. And there are some big fish out there who are after these cars, and have money today and will pay whatever they want to, whenever the thought to do so crosses their mind.

I would be quite surprised if this seller hangs onto this car specifically for you, particularly if someone makes him a good offer in the next 6 months before you're ready. I seriously wish you the best, but don't be surprised if this car is "sold out from under you."

IMHO -- and I've said this many times before to people here who are in the hunt for the 'perfect car' -- one shouldn't be "in the market" for such a car until they have cash in hand and are ready to pounce. It's a matter of being in the position of strength, as opposed to being at the whim of the market/seller. It's like buying a house without a pre-approval and hoping for the best. Sometimes it works out, much of the time it doesn't. Markets aren't forgiving, and generally won't wait for peoples' circumstances to change. I know this seller has expressed good intentions, so Good luck !!

FYI, still in talks with owner. Timetable hasn't changed, given my situation, but something may come of it.

Is there anyone on the board who has actually personally viewed this car? I'm just curious to get feedback/insight.

I think there were a couple of self-proclaimed 124 experts individuals on the Peanut Gallery(TM) over at BAT who had personally seen this car when it was up for sale?

Spoke to owner and it's possible car may get moved to NorCal, approximately an hour or so South of me. This will give me an opportunity to view personally sooner rather than later.

I'll stop talking price for now, 'cause it seems that the consensus here is to buy a good E500E at a significantly lower price, rather than an a really good one at almost double that. I'm always listening, and will continue to evaluate the options, but for me have a really good specimen gives me infinitely more pleasure. For example, the number of sheer joy moments I've had with this e320, that this board found for me, have really surprised me. Any time I open up a compartment or do any work on the car, I'm astounded by it's newness and originality. I've lost count of the LOL moments I've had in the short time since I've taken delivery. So, again, for me, it's really an emotional decision with this purchase. I guess I'll know if it's the right car for me when I finally see it.

Thanks all for continue to listen to me ramble in this thread.

I think this is a great example to get into. You can put 5-10k on this car and still retain All the value Worst case.

10 years from now examples like this will be Fewer yet so given that these cars are just finding their favour with everyone I don't see how you could go wrong everything being as it Looks to be.

Having spent some miles in one with 17k on the clock you'll dig it.....

Generally speaking I don't like to pay more for a vehicle than I feel that I can dispose of it. I don't necessarily follow that rule for daily drivers, but for a car like this I would have a tough time forking over $80k. With the miles I would be extremely reluctant to drive it more a few miles once or twice a year. $80k for a garage sculpture is a lot of money. If money were no object I suppose I could be a player but there are thousands of other cars (brands and models) that would be a much better investment for that kind of money.

I would also check with collector car insurers to see if you can get an agreed value that high. Unless you have a car museum somewhere there isn't a lot of enjoyment owning a shrink wrapped car.

Also, if you have never owned an E500E I would recommend picking up a lower priced one just to make sure your expectations match the vehicle. The first few months might be filled with glee but that wears off and the $80k buyer's remorse could kick in. With an $80k budget there are a lot of really nice cars and trucks out there to choose from. Not knocking the E500E just being pragmatic. It is not the rocket ship it was in the early '90's.

That’s true about the expectations. We’ve had more than a few big spenders (and even little spenders) buy their dream E500E, only to realize pretty quickly that it didn’t float their boat personally, and they sold it quick....

Consignment? Did the 2 high bidders at ~$79k both flake? Doesn't make sense to ship the car and try again for a $2k price gap, unless I'm missing something.

Seller didn't need the money. Yet the car is being shuttled off to (presumably) fetch more dough?

I'm sure there are plenty of popcorn-worth tales associated with big-buck collectible euro cars, but this car isn't a member of that class. It should have already sold for the price of a new mid-level E class.

Why has this proven to be such a protracted sale(to me, at least)?

I heard about this from the owner via email, and I'm interested in having a look. I would have pinged you sooner, but I've been out with this stupid flu for the past 2+ weeks. I'm typically in SF once every other wk. Can u please PM me with your contact details. Thx.

Really good idea about the insurance. I hadn't thought about that. I think there is a thread here with suggested insurers. I need to do some research.

With regard to other options for $80K, what would u suggest I consider? I just love the pre-2000's Mercedes engineering. Only other car I've considered is a $300K+ Ferrari. While I love the engineering, especially of the pwr plant, I just don't view them as a practical car. And I want something that I feel comfortable driving with engineering architecture that impresses me (and I'm an aero engineer). But please, feel free to suggest away.

I worked really really hard for a very very long time for the return I'm about to get. Last thing I'm going to do now is sit on it or compromise over what I want. I'm going to get a 500E that blows me away, and I'm going to drive it a lot.

Insurance would be my primary concern at this price level. There are a few insurance threads discussing the options from Hagerty, Grundy, and a couple others I'm forgetting offhand.

I'm not sure what else to suggest as alternatives, but I think it depends on your intended usage: daily driver (or close to it), or something that comes out every few months for a sunny weekend drive?

80K...There are some interesting AMG's coming out of Japan for around that mark... be it 124/129/210/140/126.. You could likely find a SOHC 560SEC Widebody for that in very nice shape. Any DOHC car is going to be rough @ the 80K mark. There is a Japanese conversion SL70 for sale right now for 68K. You could likely pick up a couple 210 E60's... There is that RENNTech SL74 for sale down in TX for around 80G but I could be Off on that number.

there is a REALLY nice 550 Maranello in Nart blue over tobacco w/ 13K for sale for 160K...I'd buy that if I had the cash

I can think of a whole bunch of cars but most of them aren't going to be Merc's. It isn't my money and I am not in your position but if I was going to spend 80k my first choice would be a 1967 Chevy II with an L65 motor. That's a car that sold for about 5k new and is now worth about 15 times that and very easy to work on. Not as comfy as a Merc but as an investment and fun to drive it is right up there. I would trade both of my E500E's for a nice one in a heart beat. Virtually any 1960's or 1970's chevy muscle car would be at the top of my list. I've owned a few and restored a couple. I would consider a C6 ZR1. That would be a blast to own. Nothing beats a supercharged LS. No end to the tuning you can do to one.

I have my collection insured with Hagerty on guaranteed value policies. The E500 is somewhat overinsured and they don't care as long as I pay the premium. It's a collector policy so they prefer the cars be used for periodic pleasure drives and tours rather than as a daily driver. They do want me to have a primary use car insured on full coverage insurance, not with them, so I do have one vehicle left with State Farm.

I tend to agree that insurance shouldn't be a hurdle.
When I added my '97 Landcruiser to my collector policy, the Hagerty underwriter didn't hesitate. The value on that vehicle is approx 5X what one might find by looking at typical "book" values. They just wanted pics and a sale document to support the covered amount. And of course the premium.

Current valuation from Hagerty for a "concours" 1994 E500 is around $51k:

    https://www.hagerty.com/apps/valuati...EA36E6RC154682

I have no idea if they will be willing to insure for $80k or not.

    $51,200

Hagerty insures beyond their #1 Condition estimated value.

They don't (yet) track values for my 97 Landcruiser (FZJ80), but they do for my FJ62. It's also insured with Hagerty and the coverage exceeds their #1 value, by maybe 20-25% and its condition is more like a very strong #2.

I think I'd drive her a few times per week. Probably splitting duty between the e320 sedan and cabrio.

As soon as my Evo II wheels arrive and are installed my car will look exactly like this 22k mile collector.

I'll sell mine for half of the 80k!
