Final Stop on the Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Several more sights rarely seen these days were observed resting next to each other along the way to the 400E.

1950 DeSoto (still with a few pickable parts available)

It's OK Derf...you're among friends here.

This forum is an excellent place to practice and refine your justifications. We get it, and we can help you.

Good job on the black (pod) ops, BTW !!

    Derf,

Your killing me, I once owned a 67 Coupe DeVille. A shame to see one in the ‘BONEYARD’.

That Caddy was a real ‘LUXO BARGE’ cruiser. The interiors were beautifully done and just luxurious. The only difference I saw from 67 to 68 was the bumpers. It was a great car in it’s day. Sometimes I wish I still had it but it probably wouldn’t run very well on today’s cheapo fuel.

That big V8 cranked out if I remember about 375 HP but was moving probably 6000 lbs.

    Memories from the past.

    Thanks
    Terry

This 400E pick and pull blog must the closest thing to sexual gratification one might find on the 500eBoard!
Indeed – for me it is exciting to get up on a Saturday morning, pack my tools and head to the yards to see what ‘treasures’ I can unearth from Junk w124’s. I have had very good luck this past few months with several cars all to myself seemingly with the yards admitting I’m essentially their only w124 customer.

The only step up in gratification levels is your own personal w124 parts ‘yard’ I have parted out several in the past and recently. Indeed in a few hours another 1993 w124 is being delivered to me which I will part out myself at home. It’s got the pre-facelift grill and trunk from factory with amber lenses – but the facelift door side cladding's also. (It failed MOT due to rust)

The large black pod is for the center vent flap, and is often DOA. Test everything with a Mity-Vac, they should hold vacuum and not leak down at all. Performance Analysis used to sell single diaphragms for under $10 to rebuild this pod, but those went NLA a year or three ago. Now, you'd have to buy a new PinkPod™ and take it apart to extract the new diaphragm, to rebuild a large black pod... and, hope you don't damage the black pod in the process (if one of the plastic lock tabs breaks, game over.)

The small black pod is for the diverter pod, which allows airflow to bypass the heater core. This small pod is still available new from MB. If you hoard one, just don't tell lowman.

Well the situation isnt great for me either, just recently one yard that had 4 (well picked) w124’s decided to crush them all. So that was a very good resource - now gone for me. But another yard got in 2x C124’s a few months back and those I have thoroughly picked myself – 2x trailer loads of parts off them. I’ve got the rear axle, headlamps, tail-lamps, alloy wheels, front hubs, 8x C124 window regulators, Sportline springs, all relays & ECU’s doors and a tonne of trim off these C124's now. I went to town on them simply because I may never see another C124 available for parts again.

This pic is of the 320CE Sportline on one of my last visits.

    IMG_6792.JPG

Going back to cut a large section of the floor under the fuel tank out of it for my 320CE. So in terms of yards there’s only these 2x C124’s left currently. I also know that the local yards are refusing to take in W124’s now (no matter how cheap) as they are too old for them to be interested. So sadly any that are left are likely going straight to the crusher. I will continue to break w124's one by one at home and stockpiling parts when I can

My Double Garage has an attic space over it. It’s not overly huge but just enough to stuff the majority of my hoard into. Off the top of my head at the moment the qtys are something like 10 doors, 8 bumpers, 20 wing mirrors, 12 headlamps, 4 bonnets (AKA- hoods) and it goes on & on. There is an electric winch and a large hatch to allow stuff to be lifted up easily. I just have to be careful to keep the load spread out evenly and not to take the ceiling down!

I am in the middle of sorting through my hoard and tidying it up. In a week or two I’ll post a list of parts on the board that are available for sale. Tonnes of spare relays that sort of thing. I have too many of some items and may as well pass them on... and I can use the money to concentrate the hoard on other stuff too.

The nla pod isn't really NLA. It is identical to one of the others, and you just switch out the actuator arm. At least if the pods are the same as the other w124 cars.

The two black round pods are different sizes, and not interchangeable. I am not aware of any other pod which is the same size / same mounting as the NLA center vent pod in the 124. The only method I'm aware of is what I posted above, to replace the diaphragm inside (which can be removed from one of the dual-chamber "pink" pods).

What part number? I just redid all the pods in a w124 wagon last year. Only one was nla, but I subbed another one in. I can find the part numbers.

Note: 1986, and early 1987, USA model years have different footwell flap pods... the early cars have twin small/round pods that are similar to the diverter pod. Late cars have a flat/rectangular pod that rarely fails.

It seems to me that almost every Mercedes in the yards I find are W124s or W201s. All the W124s are 300Es. I usually find nothing of value in them except the visor clips.

Of course, I'm lucky enough to have this beast in my local yard. Euro 6.9 with all the M100 bits still attached. I have a weekly appointment to disassemble this car.

If someone interested there is e420 in LKQ pick your part in Durham,NC and another one in Raleigh,NC as well. I just got from there, pick up front coil springs, rear brakes and front shocks, a lot of good parts still in there.
Durham has an ESR version of e420

You should get the transmission valve bodies + intermediate plates from both cars. It's only 15-20 minutes of work to get them off; just be sure to bring several plastic garbage bags with you to keep them clean, and keep the upright as installed in the car.

    Re: 1992 400E Pick & Pull Bliss

Get the metal bracket that supports the exhaust pipes, and the U-shaped cast aluminum bracket that is under the driveshaft behind the transmission. All are applicable only to the V-8 W124 cars.

Also be sure to get all of the computers that you can from both cars, particularly the E-GAS, LH and ASR modules (if the car(s) have ASR).

Instrument cluster and push-button unit for the ACC is a good idea. The asiprator motor (behind and to the right of the passenger airbag), and all of the relays and dashboard/center console switches that you can. Door seat window switches. Vacuum pump under the rear seat is a good one. Get the glove box between the seats and the armrest, if in good condition. Wood on the doors and dash, if in good condition. Get the visor clips if they are not weak/crumbly. Mirror boots if not cracked. Rear third brake-light if not sun-baked. Rear sun shade if so equipped. Taillights if in good condition and not broken. Upper and lower wiring harnesses, if replaced (they are NLA from MB). Coils are good to get as emergency spares. EZL, if still there, as a spare or to sell.

Engine airbox and plastic coverings, to sell to others.

It's all a matter as to how much time you have to get stuff.

Depending on mileage and recent replacement:

    fan shroud
ETA, provided it has a later build date
    EZL
    headlight wipers and motors
    arm rest
interior wood,,, bonus points for heated seat switches
    rear view mirror
upper and lower wiring harnesses, if newer

Sometimes owners throw new parts at these before they give up. Check distributor caps, wires, coils, etc.

"I usually find nothing of value in them except the visor clips."

I'd get every nice rear 3rd brake light too. Wagons especially. I've got a spare in grey for my 500e. Don't forget nice mirror boots and hardware.

    Re: 1992 400E Pick & Pull Bliss

It is EXCEEDINGLY rare to find good mirror boots, in any part of the country, on a 124 made after model year 1991-1992. In fact, I think I've only removed mirror boots off of ONE post-1992 car, ever. Usually they are off of 1986-1989 cars that I find them in the best condition.

But, it's always worth it to try.

Third brake lights seem to attract vandals more often than not, and are usually pretty trashed, if not by the vandals wrecking yard scavengers, then by the sun.

All USA-spec 124.034/.036 had the 10-speaker "sound system" with twin amplifiers in the trunk. However... in USA, all 1991-1993 USA model years had the 1432 system, and 1994-up (facelift) had the 1492 system. The wiring harnesses and amps are different, but I think most of the speakers are the same?

Yes, this car had the 10 speaker stereo with the dual amplifiers (Data Card: Sound System 757/810). I was also after the amplifiers (p/n 124 820 10 89) & any other stereo/audio components that some jackass removed from my 500E prior to my ownership (the original tuner was never removed from my 500E).

This '92 400E car is the "goldmine" donor for all of my required audio items, & all of these items appear to be in very good/excellent condition.

I believe I now have all items required to return my 500E audio system to stock.
