    FS: S124 300TE AMG M119 6.0L, Nachtgrün, €59k

Did we already have this one? Seems to be for sale at the moment at Retro Classics Stuttgart 2018. At least, that is what AMS writes. 2nd and 3rd image.

Hmmm... 1989 model, modified in 1991? Wonder what engine is under the hood!!

IIRC someone on this forums knows this car. Or has seen it irl. Since it was mentioned some while ago. I think it was in a thread about another AMG 6 liter 124 wagon version. Can't find it though.

    Could it be a quadcam M117 like Jono's or an M119 6.0?

    Re: S124 300TE 6.0 AMG Nachtgrün

I know the car. It was our customer but don't know if it still belongs to the same family. The father, a bigger business owner (Ungerer Machine construction company in Pforzheim) has passed it on to his son who did some prep work to it since it had the typical rust issues in the left and right side trunk pockets and around the luggage compartments windows. This was like 11 years ago.

However this car was at AMG 2 times. First directly after he collected the car when new from our dealership, it was equipped with a M117 (i don't know for sure if it was a quad cam but) my older colleagues said it had 5.6L at that time. The engine got damaged after 2 years ('91) and then it went back to AMG and got there the 6L M119.960 engine. It had around 300000km when I saw it last time.

The interior is in dark green leather wrapped, front seats are Recaro CS-E, battery is in the right side trunk compartment, it has the Hammer rear axle/subframe modifications (this is another hint for the 2nd conversion since in '91 Hammer axles would not be fitted anymore, the standard 036 would have been used instead), 300mm 4 piston brakes in the front from R129, and the exhaust consists of a special catalytic converter and a special center muffler, no rear silencer just a big straight pipe till the tips. Sound is beautiful...

The dark green was and still is the CI color of the owners company.
Almost forgot, the car has a full AMG type VIN, AMG 124.....perfect Sleeper.

It actually was the M117 6 liter 32V engine. According to Fahrzeugbrief.
So this S124 was at that time, regarding the engine, similar to Jono's famous blue one.

Yes. As said I only got the pre M119 story of my older colleagues. Only know the car from its M119 times. Remembering driving it was great at that times and still would be today.

So cool to see a real pre-merger AMG car from Germany and not some AMG Japan creation.

    Re: FS: S124 300TE AMG M119 6.0L, Nachtgrün, €59k

    Wow.

Where do I begin? I love green. In fact its my favorite color, but holy crap. Thats a LOT of green. Is all of that inside custom, or was there a green interior option available on the continent?

    A few questions/observations:

-no ASR! That must be fun in the rain. What year was it first an option? ‘91 with the early/first 500s?
    - a 119.6xx with CIS as the starting point? Quite interesting. I wonder if this was just due to the timeframe of the second conversion. The LH m119 was again a 500e debut, correct? So this might have been a bit early to take advantage. Later AMG 6.0s were LH units correct?
-~6200 red line. Was this similar on all .6 119s?
-i’d love to hear if anyone has opinions on the characteristics of the LH v. CIS M119s. I’m not trying to re-hash the injection type debate. I’m actually curious if they feel or operate any differently. The different redline seems to make me think they might have a different torque curve?

    Re: FS: S124 300TE AMG M119 6.0L, Nachtgrün, €59k

Green interior was optional worldwide, but VERY rare in USA... might have been rare across the pond too?

No ASR = you better know how to drive when the rear end swings out.

The M119.960 with CIS-E was only used in the 129.066 chassis, which was 1990-1992 model years of the 500SL. This was the tall-deck M119. The version used in the E500E was the short-deck M119, and all 119.97x (LH) and 119.98x (ME) continued with the short-deck engine.

Actual redline on the 400E420, and E500E, is 6000-6300, see attachment for details. The tach shows 6000 though.

Jono and Klink both say the early tall-deck M119's seem to rip harder, but I've never driven one so I can't comment on that.

Neat! Thanks for the background. I noticed in that PDF there is a governed engine speed for P, N, and R. Does that really mean the engine will spin up to 5600rpm and hold there if a just mash the gas to the floor and hold it while its in park??

Yup. Although, I don't think I've ever actually tried this...

The CIS/KE5 M119 was installed only in the first three model years of the 129 500SL and it is a zingy, smooth, and responsive delight. It feels like they actually put some care into designing and tuning it in such a way that it would appeal to a “driver”. It feels like a much smaller displacement engine, but with 5.0L torque. The LH M119s feel anodyne and lifeless compared to it, feeling more like they were designed to meet consumption and emission targets. It’s not that the LH motors feel bad, but the CIS/first version M119 feels fantastic. They are so different in so many ways that I remember being somewhat surprised that the later versions of the engines retained the M119 designation. A different engine number would have been more in keeping with previous practices when there had been such a dramatic changes.

Awesome. Thanks Klink. This is exactly what I was looking for. I will no longer fear the 1990-92 SL's on CL!

But why does the standard VIN not appear in the car registration document? And then striped out, just like for example the kW and cm3 when the engine was switched.

    IMG_1862.JPG

Like they did for this car in the Wartungsheft.

    1.jpg

And some other thing, is the 6 liter 4V M117 AMG engine not 'supposed' to be a M117.968 engine? I read M117.963. I read it here as well.

    Re: FS: S124 300TE AMG M119 6.0L, Nachtgrün, €59k

Easy, the main registration document is issued/changed after the major modification when Mercedes-Benz is not the manufacturer anymore. Such can be after the drive train in conjunction with other major components are changed or modified in a high extent. Therefore the car got a new manufacturer related vin and the original one becomes invalid/irrelevant. Therefore no further remark in the Brief. The Wartungheft data card is just amended. Same with the brief when the m119 was installed. It's a retrofit but not anymore a major modification.
For the 6.0 conversion it doesn't matter what base engine of the M117 is used.

Thanks for sharing the document. Just proofing my knowledge of the car. The current owner seems to not to be aware properly since he did write only about the m119 conversion.

BTW. I don't know if you saw it. I got the prototype m104 with the 16v style valve cover. Since you were asking around also on Facebook. Check my owners thread.

No, i had not seen you bought the M104 prototype. Good feeling you have for such rare stuff. Just like the Sport-Technik. I came across this engine image on my computer. No further specs though.

    Engine number.

This engine number, also from an S124 , comes exactly one number earlier.

I recently bought an SL with 6.0 AMG CIS engine, and wow it has TORQUE. Looking forward to driving it more soon
Very different feel compared to an LH indeed. LH is a bit flatter around 3k rpm and swings up in torque from 3.5 to 4k. The CIS m119 does feel more alive a lower revs (and certainly in 6.0-trim!)

The 6.0L with LH is pretty sweet too, although I've never driven a 6.0 CIS for comparison. The midrange torque is like Slurm... highly addictive. Always made me wonder what a Brabus 6.4L would be like!

My SL is also from the DarkCISide. It's a original de-cated version which is faster in acceleration than the cat version (as documented in the owners manual). As per my Butt dyno it's not necessarily faster than my 124 with 5L setup that might be due to the weight difference and the ported/polished heads etc in the 124. However during the shifting point of the cams at around 3300/3500 rpm (vtech just kicked in yo, lol) the pull is much more noticeable than in the LH engined 124.
Still have to check the EHA setting for full load on the SL.
