Try moving the shift lever around while turning the key to the #2 / start position. If either of the shift rod bushings are worn you can have problems. There should be zero play in the shift lever. Next would be checking the NSS / starter locking switch on the transmission.

Any error codes on the E-GAS module? NSS problems usually trigger a code. Could also be a failing ignition switch (electrical portion behind the lock tumbler), or a failing lower harness...

I think the small wire in your photo goes to the alternator... which may have been damaged, and/or may have damaged something at the instrument cluster. Really don't know what may have been fried if you jumped across the red arrows in your pic.

The proper connection which goes to the starter on the E500E is shown in the attached photo, the center pin of the 3-pole connector. It's not in that junction block at all.

The small pole I jumped has a blue wire and a few more

No. Wires with blue insulation are NOT grounds. All ground wires on Mercedes are brown in color, and generally there are a bunch all connected together, for example as you'll find at the passenger side strut mount area.

The block in your photo is the main power distribution block (aka Terminal Block X4/10) , however it also has other wires routed through it as well (like the blue one). The schematics confirm the blue wire you fed +12v to goes to the field terminal of the alternator.

C2 is a black cylinder located directly behind X4/10 but even if defective, would have nothing to do with your problems. See PDF page 59 (printed page 54) here:
    http://124performance.com/docs/mb/W1...to_Service.pdf

N7 is located behind the main fuse box area, with the other main relays. Again, this won't affect starting, or make the gauges not work. But you should check all the fuses.
