    FS: 1990 560SEC AMG 6.0L Quadcam, $0.3M (Amelia Island Auction, Mar-2019)

    Auction next March.

    VIN = WDB1260451A489711

    https://hollywoodwheels.com/auction/...-6-0-cf004300/

1990 Mercedes Benz 560 SEC AMG Wide Body 6.0

    Auction Estimate $250,000 - $350,000

1 of 25 factory widebody cars built in Germany at the AMG factory and the last one built making it the most collectible & valuable 6.0 DOHC 32 valve Factory Widebody available. All matching numbers and AMG serial numbers engraved in the driver’s doorsill, documenting 100% authenticity! The number 25 is also engraved on the 4 valve heads to document the last car produced in Germany with the AMG M117 motor. 60 is also engraved on the heads documenting that it is in fact a 6.0-liter engine! This car is the best example & rarest on the planet!!!

Over $50,000 in recent Renntech receipts that can be viewed at the office. Hartmut Feyhl, owner of Renntech Mercedes, designed & built the famous 6.0 DOHC engine when he was at AMG in Germany at Hans Warner Aufrech’s shop & owner of AMG Germany before Mercedes bought the company. This car cost quarter million dollars when new back in 1990 & ran circles around Lamborghini’s & Testarossa’s of their day, cost 2 and a half times as much as those cars & were way more collectible, comfortable, reliable & exclusive! Coming out of a long stay in a private collection.

Re: FS: 1990 560SEC AMG 6.0L Quadcam, $0.3M (Amelia Island Auction)

Per the verbiage in the auction description, I was not aware that Hartmut Feyhl designed and built the 6.0 twincam M117.

For decades now, I have been under the (evidently mistaken) impression that Erhard Melcher designed, engineered and built the twincam heads for the 117s. And that Hartmut assembled the engines, ran AMG North America, and later founded RENNtech here in the USA. But I guess I have been wrong all this time.

    You learn something every day.

These auction guys and sellers sure have a way with words, particularly when it comes to embellishing and falsifying facts.

Good to see someone keepin' you humble, Honch! Takes a big man to admit he's been wrong about so much, for so many years...

This car was already for sale in January, there was no bid at 165k usd, the auction ended w/o bid (afaik)
I wonder how we target 300k now...
    Maybe 500k in september?

    Yes, I think so.

And the red "flood victim" AMG 124 cabrio goes from $65K to 125K as well....

Also appears it may be a 1989, not a 1990... hope it doesn't still have the wrong-hand-drive headlights fitted too.

I thought #25 on the valve cover indicated the mechanic who built the motor, or something along those lines... but definitely did not mean this was the 25th widebody built. Also not sure if the claim of "only 25" is accurate either. Jono prolly knows.

I was expecting this to be "one of 12" rather than "one of 25", given that everyone seems to think that 12 is the magic number when it comes to AMG modification of rare models........

Strange that they (AMG - as per the auction ad) kept records of how many wide body sec's have been built if they didn't even counted the later wide body w124 ce's. Maybe they (AMG) found after the wb sec production that the number 25 is not the magical universal key code for everything and the engineers where going back to the drawing boards and calculations and found then that the number 12 is the real deal to unlock the secrets of the universe... Or just call it b/s auction advertising.

Also a slight salt caused corrosion on the valve cover doesn't fit to a 300k $ car.

I've owned this car for 14 years.

1967, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher founded the Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach Ingenieurbüro, Konstruktion und Versuch zur Entwicklung von Rennmotoren, or, roughly translated, the Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach (AMG) engineering firm, design and testing for the development of racing engines. Großaspach was the name of the town where Aufrecht’s home was where the two engineers initially began tuning Mercedes-Benz engines in the early 1960s, thus lending the "G" in AMG. Responsible for some of the quickest, fastest and most expensive Mercedes-Benz vehicles to ever roll the asphalt, the AMG name began truly becoming a household name in the 1980s with more Mercedes-Benz products being offered with AMG styling and performance touches. Commonly seen on the popular television series “Miami Vice,” AMG-equipped vehicles were more than just an appearance package, they were an entire makeover for an already well-equipped vehicle. Case in point, this 1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC AMG, No. 25 of 25 wide-body cars built at the AMG factory in Germany, features not only the infamous wide-body treatment, but custom bucket seats, extra wood trim, custom steering wheel, AMG-specific wheels with wider, lower-profile tires, custom paintwork and custom body work such as widened bumpers, rear deck-mounted spoiler and much more. Part of the magic behind these earlier AMG cars was in the subtleness of design.

This 560SEC AMG is painted code-199U Blue-Black Metallic and has an all-black leather interior; it has the serial number engraved in the driver door sill, and No. 25 is engraved on the 4-valve heads to document the last car produced with the multiport fuel-injected, 6.0L/385 HP AMG M117 engine. Receipts document a recent $50,000 service by famed Mercedes-Benz tuner RennTech in Florida. With 4-wheel disc brakes and 4-wheel independent suspension with coil springs, it stops well and rides much more compliantly than it looks.

Believed to have covered a scant 37,062 miles from new—the metric odometer reads 59,646 kilometers—this 560SEC AMG wide body is indeed an exuberantly rare crown jewel of a machine.

I hear that. From what I see, this is a AMG of Japan built vehicle, not AMG of Germany. AMG has over the years stamped the displacement of the motor on the engine block, followed by a sequenced number assigned to the motor, not necessarily the car. AMG also has a history of building the motors and when a order for a vehicle comes in, they pull the motor off the shelf. So the number 25 very well could indicate the motor is number 25 but it may not indicate the car is number 25, especially if the motor is used in different models. The W210 E60 is like this, it starts life as a E50, AMG pulls the 5.0l motor and puts the 6.0l motor in, so the engine number does not match the VIN of the car. I have only examined a handful of these early AMG cars in person, but the ones I did look over had engine numbers did not match the VIN of the car either, but these were post 92 cars (when AMG was doing more of a production line build process than the ala carte method of previous years).

It would be nice to hear from owners of 80's genre AMG cars to see if the engine codes match up with the VIN of the car.

When chatting with Hartmut he explained the last 2 digit code to correlate w/ the technician that built the engine. Which IMHO, makes sense...and we can all see that has carried through in spades to the modern engines.

As for engine# matching the VIN/datacard...some yes, some no. Some that did match were VERY crude re-stamps..the most common method i see it obliterate old numbers with a hammer...re-stamp with what ever die's are lurking. Worked well enough!

But anywho, yes a Japanese AMG...with an engine that hasn't had it's valve lash checked..or anything else under the valve cover since japan.
