    Lower Fan Shroud NLA?

I was just informed by Naperville (mboemparts.com) that the lower radiator fan shroud (124 500 13 55) is no longer available. They said the upper (124 500 12 55) is only available in Germany. I have been in the process of replacing fan shrouds for both cars. I guess I must have bought the last lower fan shroud last month.

Does anyone know how this NLA works? Is this permanent or will MB eventually call their elves in to make another batch?

Sometimes another batch is made, other times not. No logic to it. Worth checking on every 6 months or so.

With a part with such little call for it (low production and not often replaced), I'd err toward it not being available in the future.

You'll probably not get a straight answer, but unless some code in Paragon indicates the part is on backorder... it ain't looking good.

You could ask the MB Classic Center and see if they can provide any more details, but I have a bad feeling we may not see new ones again. Sure hope I'm wrong.

Have we started a list of parts that are NLA? I recall seeing a thread on here somewhere.

Well this is interesting. I have a package from mboemparts arriving tomorrow that supposedly contains a lower shroud!

Hopefully there is one in the box when it arrives tomorrow!!!

I think the lower shroud is part of GVZ's $5000 deferred maintenance.

if they were cracked..i would still not go zip tie..i would go for two component epoxy glue,or even plasticwelding..and sand it down to achieve a smooth surface

Not sure, but derf posted that fix a bit before you came on with that video. i did the same. I have seen these in the yard with zip ties connecting pieces together, like someone stepped on it and broke it. I used a soldering pencil to heat up my bolts.

The original fan shroud in my 500E was zipped tied at the joint. It got a whole new one about a year ago- glad I got that when I did! Forget the grey switches, nothing pulls the ladies faster than a new E500E fan shroud

The other thing is the little rubber flaps go awol on the shrouds. They do have an important function to allow the viscous fan full pull on the radiator at rest and then at speed the shroud flaps open up and allow extra wind cooling through the radiator. The new shroud came with the flaps - perhaps they are also available separately

New external temp LCD displays (particularly in the rare Fahrenheit scale) are far better. Women in the UK go gaga over the mysterious F-degrees and MPH speedos.....in a LHD car at that.

100% correct, and many people do not understand this. I've seen some cars where it appears the flaps were purposely removed, likely in an attempt to "improve" cooling. The flaps should close when the viscous fan is engaged; and at higher vehicle speeds they will open if the fan is freewheeling. Neat design.

But no, the flaps are not sold separately. Gotta raid them off junkyard cars if they are needed.

Is the fan shroud the same between an 034 and an 036? I don’t have my EPC handy...

IIRC... yes. There are minor variations between model years but all are interchangeable, AFAIK.

    Re: Lower Fan Shroud NLA?

In my case, the shroud was dry-rotted and cracked on the bottom. Also, the flaps have started to fall off. It would be a difficult restoration job. My shroud is being held together by PC-7 and tie wraps on the bottom.

It looks like we are seeing an acceleration of a campaign by Mercedes to follow other manufacturers and dump loyal enthusiasts who own MBs more than 20-years-old, which is sad because I don't believe they've made a good, non-disposable vehicle (one that can reasonably be kept running indefinitely) in the last 20 years -- certainly not one that I would consider buying.

I think we're going to see less of the small parts runs. Mercedes use to tack these on large orders. Seems the by up of Behr has kinda ended small runs. My contact with Behr announced retirement this past month, sad but true. But he had seen a significant move that they were no longer doing the small run parts. Getting small run requests to me was always what made his job challenging and very cool.
