    FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 25kmi, $63k (Chicago, IL)

    NO AFFILIATION

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/500-Series-500E/323260945906 <-- Listing ends May 24, 2018.

    VIN = WDBEA36EXNB767324

    1992 Mercedes-Benz 500 Series 500E 25k Miles, 1 Owner, VIDEO
    Chicago Car Club Chicago

We are selling this beautiful 500E on behalf of the original owner, a Chicago-based collector and enthusiast. He purchased the car new from Loeber Motors in Lincolnwood, IL as a daily driver for his wife. Shortly after that, his wife asked him to trade the 500E in for a 300E, as she thought the car was too fast. As an enthusiast who recognized the significance of the 500E model, he did not trade in the car. Rather, he got her a 300E and held onto the 500E as a weekend car. He used it a handful of times each year, accumulating only 25k miles over the course of his 26 year ownership. As it sits, this an extremely well-presented, one-owner, low mileage example. Truly collector-level. This car is so unmolested that the plastic on the sill inside the rear door is still in place! The car will be sold with all original books and manuals as well as the complete original toolkit still in the plastic.

Exterior: - Please see the video with the listing, as every blemish on the car is shown close-up and in direct sunlight. There sure aren’t many. There are a few scuffs on the very bottom of the front valance, as well as a small nick on the rear corner of the passenger quarter. No door dings. Original paint presents phenomenally well. Again, please defer to the video. - Wheels and tires are in excellent shape. No curb rash or discoloring. Michelin tires were new in 2016 and are in like-new condition. - Glass and light lenses are all clear and crack-free. - Body panels are all original with VIN stickers

Interior: - Interior is extremely nice. The radio has been swapped out for a Kenwood unit, but other than that the interior presents as factory. Dash is mint, faux wood inserts show no hairline cracks or damage. - Grey carpeting is in nice shape, car will also come with its original grey MB floormats. - Gauges are all functional. As is heat, AC, radio, windows, locks, rear shade, sunroof, etc. All powered systems work as they should. Odometer reads 25,579 and is functional and accurate. - Seats are in fantastic shape. Driver’s outer bolster has some very slight wear, as shown close-up in the video, passenger is excellent. Rear seats look to have seldom been used, as they appear like-new. In the photo of the rear seat on the driver’s side you may note what looks like a stain the center of the seatback; we have since gotten that out.

Under the Hood / Underbody: - Please take a look through the underbody photos, as the car is documented in detail. The underbody is in nice shape, as the car has been garage kept since it was new. The heat shields around the exhaust show some rusting, but the body itself is excellent with no rust or damage whatsoever. - This car runs and drives phenomenally well. The huge reputation the 500E has garnered as one of the all-time great high-speed cruisers is very much justified. The car is extremely comfortable and dead silent inside the cabin; the build quality is evident immediately upon getting in. At just 25k original miles, this car has never required much more of a service than fluids and tires. Those items have been addressed periodically as they should, and the car truly drives like-new. There are absolutely no noises or tendencies of concern. Wouldn’t hesitate to drive the car across the country tomorrow (and would love to do so!). - The 5.0L M119 used in the 500E (1992-1994) was actually most powerful in 1992, as the 93 and 94 cars has 7hp less. Power delivery is smooth and effortless. Quoted figures are 322hp and 354lbft, big numbers for an early-90s sedan.

Overall, this is an extraordinary example of a fantastic, historically-significant, quickly-appreciating model. This car fits the bill as both the ultimate daily-driver, or even a prize-worthy collection piece. With any further questions, requests, or to discuss purchasing, please reach out to Jake at 773-273-8257.

Minty..."So fresh and so clean"... but I'm not into the Black Pearl effect on this car. My allroad is Black Pearl effect... Nice car though... No comment on price.

    maw

PS, Well, not really. Maybe that’s 10,000, 2.5 Mile trips... seats look a lot more worn than mine with triple the miles. But still a good candidate. I think the exhaust comes out anyway but the rusty underbelly is what it is.

The thread title says 1991 but it is clearly a 1992. The exhaust looks a little rusty for the low mileage.

That's my typo. The volume of pics had me having a bad-day-at-the-office flashback. lol

Yeah, the underside is far from pristine for miles and "always garaged."
    Headliner is falling.
    Front spoiler is toast.
    Aftermarket radio.

    Paint and wheels look good.

Not seeing or reading any reference to maintenance or receipts. #RedFlag

What a shame the car was driven in winter, on salted roads. Looks great up top, hope there's not more cancer lurking where it can't be seen.

Where’s Steven X 3? This looks like a candidate for him. Yes it has a little rust on muffler system. You could probably attribute to condensation but not winter driving. The adhesive used in the headliner has deteriorated due to age. Probably other interior stuff will get loose also. A few scuffs on the spoiler. It will probably have $5K deferred maintenance just from lack of use. That’s all Mickey Mouse stuff the basic car looks solid.

The asking price of $63K is a long ways from the $85K or $95K other low mileage cars are asking. If Steven X 3 is serious he should take a look before a flipper gets his hands on it and it becomes another $100K asking price.

It's not just the exhaust system. That car will not be a joy to wrench on, IMO.
Seller did a good job photo-documenting the condition, but there are plenty of hidden areas which need poking and prodding.

The miles are super-attractive, but is somebody going to pay big bucks for a car that looks like that underneath?
Interior looks a bit more worn than the miles would suggest. Perhaps it just goes hand in hand with having gray guts?

    Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 25kmi, $63k (Chicago, IL)

    ace,

Any car that is 25 years old will have problems. Mercedes did not rustproof all of the steel on the underside. Most can probably be cleaned up. The 25K miles to me means the mechanicals are good for a long time. Rubber seals and gaskets will be the biggest issue on this car. If someone starts driving it regularly it will create leaks that will require fixing. Old rubber just goes bad.

I once had a 1986 is 300E w/ 30K on the clock. The worst problem was oil leaks in the 100K I put on it.

I see this as a flipper car if an enthusiast doesn’t pick it up now. A flipper will clean it up and next time you see it the price will be pushing $100K.

    Still Just my $0.02

    Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 25kmi, $63k (Chicago, IL)

I have a garage full of Toyotas of similar vintage... four at last count. None look like that underneath (meaning they're all cleaner). I've owned a few Toyotas which were clean up top and gnarly underneath. They've all been moved off the books, because I strongly prefer pristine examples. The '95 Tacoma that I just acquired is vastly cleaner than this 500. I paid all the money and searched for months, but I know I can keep it clean and it will likely serve me the rest of my days.

Short of spraying this car with black mystery goo below the waterline to cover it all up, I don't see any possible way to clean up that much corrosion in a cost-effective (flipper friendly) way. I'm probably wrong about that, but I don't flip cars and I don't like flippers as a general rule.

It's not as if this is some basket case, but it's pretty far from pristine, IMO.

Any owner with time, patience and money can certainly get this car back to miles-appropriate condition. But is that the type of Buyer who will pay top of the market money and then embark on such a project?

A good example of why you can't buy on miles alone.

    It's all about condition.

    All of the above.

Price is crack pipe for the condition items you have all pointed out already. I don’t care how many miles it has. The small bits here and there add up, and IMHO, point more towards an inattentive owner than an enthusiast.

Just like the other thread, good old P.T. is right, so I assume this one will move along eventually. Even with the faux wood trim

For that much money, whatever the miles, the car should not have NEAR that amount of rust. That rust should take some serious money off the price of this car.

That said, it can be cleaned up and remedied.

    Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 25kmi, $63k (Chicago, IL)

They are asking $63K. After getting beat up for the undercarriage rust they will be selling for less. Lots of rusty nuts, bolts, clips and clamps to renew or replace. A new stock exhaust would be probably be $2K plus. This is not a job to give to a dealership or a resto company IMOP. An enthusiast with the space, a lift and time on his hands could make a big dent in that underside for not much cost.

Would it cost +/- $10K to cleanup the undercarriage to stock condition? Going the way of 600Eric and Jeff it can be cleaned up. I wish 600Eric or Jeff would chime in with their opinion. It would go a long way with me as to an actual cleanup cost.

The basic car is still solid. For the right price this would be a great buy. I’m anxious to see what it actually sells for. Somewhere down the road I hope we all find out.

    Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, 25kmi, $63k (Chicago, IL)

When I sold my Tundra a couple months ago, there were a few fasteners around the tailgate area which had corrosion. I couldn't transfer ownership of the truck with them looking like that. I ordered six screws from an online discount Toyota dealer, the cost was a staggering $32 with shipping. But it was a micro-scale project and there was a pending cash inflow.

On my recently-departed E63S, I offered to replaced 10-20 10mm screws in the engine bay. They had all taken on a slight rusty patina and bothered me. The Buyer waved me off on the offer. I have no clue what they would have cost, but my guess was $4-5 per. Searching might have located an aftermarket alternative, but I don't see that being a viable path for a widespread refresh. Simply too much time, sorting and inventorying.

The right kind of personality might take pleasure in refreshing this car. If everything was available (not endless runs to pick and pull, crawling on the ground, etc) I wouldn't dread it so much. But I'm fairly certain this would be end up being a soul-crushing unfinished project for me.
