I have responded to your PM.

    It is actually a 93 pre-facelift car.

Thank you. I just checked with my local importers and the duties will be higher than the car....will have to pass.

But seems like a clean car.

This is an example of the 25 year rule, which looks to the month/year of manufacture as the test for grey market designation or not.

When I imported my 92 Bornite 500E from Dubai last year, I had a letter from Mercedes verifying the month and year of manufacture, (Nov. 1991).

Which meant that this particular car could be imported into the USA with a 25 year old exemption from the grey market import rule in Dec. 2016.

Applying the same rule to the current month/year, (June 2018), you can import a 1993 car that was manufactured in May of 93 and be exempt from grey market import fees. Near the end of 2018, the 1994's will start making the 25 year old benchmark. You'll have to wait until until the end of 2019, and into 2020 for 95's to be exempt, depending upon the month of manufacture.

Just as an example, if your saying the import costs were projected to be more than $25K, my TOTAL shipping and import fees were about $4300, and I could have lowered the shipping portion with "roll on - roll off" instead of a container. (see attached).

So if looking oversees to import right now, 1993's and older are exempt, 1994's not until late 2018, 1995's not until late 2019, and it's important to be able to verify the month/year of manufacture.

Just remember that even if this car was 25 years old and exempt, you would have about $30K invested and your would be waiting for 6 to 8 weeks to get it. Then you have to get through your States requirements to register, ( do that research before you buy).

The alternative is to consider what you can buy for $30K, ($25K purchase + $5K import), that's already here in the States? I did that analysis on my purchase, and the numbers still made sense for me to import at my purchase price, which was significantly lower than this E500 you're looking at.

    Good Luck with your search...

Assuming you are located in USA, that is correct, the cost to import is insane until the car is 25 years old. However, if this car is a 1993 model and over the 25 year limit, importing should not be expensive. Did you tell your local importers that the car is less than 25 years old?

The ad says its a 1995 build, I looked for a Vin to verify, didn't see one.

It's a facelift car in appearance, and if true, even 94's are still grey market right now, (don't know when the cutoff month was for year changes).

94's won't be eligible until the first month in 1993 they started building them, Aug-Sep-Oct??? no idea...

95's build started sometimes in 94 maybe?? Maybe Gerry's data base has info for earliest build dates, to show the month of change over for each year

Post #2 and #4 indicate it's a 1993 pre-facelift car, with facelift hood/trunk. Would need the VIN to pin down the build date though.

I also just noticed Dubizzle says it's Japan-spec, meaning no oil cooler. And pre-facelift non-Euro also means it doesn't have the fancy dual-mode braking system. Since it's not a rare color or with rare options, the ROI is questionable to import to USA, IMO. Much better deal for someone in Europe.

Yes, I missed post #4. I keyed off the Post heading which still says 1995.
Knowing it's a 93 makes it eligible for the 25 year exemption most likely, but the value may not be there.

Here is what the PO of my Bornite 500E told me. He had shopped around Dubai and Abu Dabi and had found several 500's for sale by used car shops-dealers, and when commenting to one of the sales guys about the hi milage on one 500E, he was told that they could change to odometer to anything he wanted, no problem. He got the understanding that many cars for sale in that area of the world may not have true odometer readings. The Bornite car he finally purchased because the mileage was believable and he had confidence of it being accurate. The 70K Kilometer odometer could be right on this car, but then again it's being used to drive the price to $30K. I would be suspicious. Plus in this price range, factory originality may be important to future values. Facelift looks great, but it's not original.

Again, if the buyer is willing to spend up to $30K, there are many nice examples state side, that he could fly too and inspect/drive personally, that would have car fax verifiable mileage, records...etc.

The reasons I imported was the "perceived bargain", and the color. Had the price been higher, or the color another 199, it wouldn't have happened.

That is 100% Correct. There is no regulation against rolling mileage and other forms of forgery, One of our club's admin team just learned that his car is clocked after nearly 3 years of importing his car from Dubai... What news to receive at 3AM in the morning!

We also had cases in Q8 where cars bought from Dubai were seized by Interpol after they turned out to be wanted for deferred payments.

yeah, im not going to lie but i definitely could roll back the mileage on any 124 and prior. its not difficult either.
