I have broken the glass on all 3 500E500E's i have parted as well as the one car I sent to paint. It is very easy to do...I feel your pain.

The trick was to seal the glass from the inside in case of leak
is the 036 glass dealer only?

036 glass is dealer only, and you'll probably have to buy local... many internet dealers won't ship glass.

Re: Back glass molding removal help needed

A friend of mine who painted himself his 199 .036 last year told me it is difficult to remove the rear glass moulding.

First you tap slowly with two small rubber hammers one side out of the inner gap in the outward direction.

Later tap slowy from under the moulding hitting in the up direction so the moulding can get out of the grove.
That’s how he explained if I remember correctly.
I was joking with him last year about how ‘brave’ he was about removing the rear glass.

Maybe there is a specific or special tool from MB???
Btw, he is a car restoration guy, mechanic and painter which he went to a full time specific car auto mechanic school called Harry Fultz.

    now the main question
on a new glass does the molding go on the glass before installing the glass?
    thanks

My friend mentioned that yes, the moulding must be placed on the glass before the glass is mounted back.

Re: Back glass molding removal help needed

It is fairly difficult to remove the trim and put back with glass in.

    1. Never press against the glass with metal tools, like thin screw drivers, etc. At first, you might be having some success, but you will walk a fine line, then suddenly you will see a fine line on the windshield.

    2. I think gaps between the trim and the car body are too tight to remove the trim without bending or damaging it.

    3. 9 times out of 10, the trim probably needs to be carefully sacrificed in order to remove the glass without breaking the glass.

I have successfully removed back glass out of 300ce's, and it's also a pain with tight tolerances and all. The clean removal success is probably similar to removing the 500e back glass. It is not my favorite MB back glass engineering.....

If new trims are still available, or if you can get good ones from a junkyard, you could always Dremel off the old trims... maybe?

The glass and roof trims are anodized a gloss black when new and tend to fade to a bronze color over time.
