    WTB - Mass Airflow Sensor - p/n: 000 094 01 48

    Hi Everyone,

Anyone out there got a MAS p/n: 000 094 01 48 laying around they don't want? Shipping to the UK. (Apparently they are NLA from MB and from Bosch).

An original MB part would be nice.

The failed unit is a Bosch, p/n: 0 986 280 134, but some Bosch units on eBay have a part number of 0 986 280 121, whilst still giving the same MB original number of 000 094 01 48. Does any one know if these two Bosch units are interchangeable, i.e. either would fit?

I've been told to avoid MAS's where the main body is plastic, rather than metal. Has anyone anything to add to that?

    Thanks in Advance.

    Stephen

Stephen, I can answer the plastic question... the correct unit for our M119.97x (LH) engines is only available in metal.

The plastic units are for later M119 engines (1996-up) with ME injection. These will not work on the E500E, they are physically different in almost every way.

I think either Bosch number is ok, if both appear with the same MB number.

Correct, the LH MAFs as used in the .034 and .036 were aluminum housing, made by Bosch. Only available from MB new as "remanufactured" parts but still work great.

The plastic bodied MAFs were used with HFM-based M104s (such as the E320) and as GSXR said the ME-based M119s, and on later models/engines.

Bottom line, there is no plastic bodied MAF that is compatible with the .034 or .036 M119 with LH injection.

If they can be cleaned, do they need to be replaced?

There is a built-in, self-cleaning function that burns off residue from the hot wire. Usually, when they fail, they read way off from actual and do need to be replaced. They're not particularly common failures though.

    Re: WTB - Mass Airflow Sensor - p/n: 000 094 01 48

Generally as GSXR says the LH MAFs don't need to be cleaned. At every engine OFF cycle, the MAF heats up to red-hot for a few seconds to burn off any detritus that it may have collected through the airflow over it during operation. This is a built-in, automatic cleaning cycle.

I don't think MAF cleaner spray is (necessarily) needed for an LH MAF, although it probably can't hurt for a HFM (hot-film) and later types of MAF.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

The component would only truly need replacement if the hot wire assembly was fatigued or broken.
