Re: fs - Brembo Aluminum 500E calipers

Fwiw, with the right pad/rotor and fluid this is an Awesome caliper for the street. Keeps things Light and the smooth calipers look damn sharp.

I run these on the Brumos 500E with porterfield R4's (no S), cryo'd rotors and Castrol SRF. I was down right Mean to them on our last mountain run and they hung in something Fierce even while chasing a 211 e63 most of the way

Re: fs - Brembo Aluminum 500E calipers

I have these calipers on my 92 with Zimmerman cryo rotors from http://www.frozenrotors.com with the Porterfield R4-S pads that Jono & Klink recommended as I wanted the best stopping possible with the stock set up. This combo is fantastic for anyone that wants to keep things stock. Thanks again Jono & Klink!!!

I'll third the recommendation for Porterfield R4-S pads. They are expensive, but worth it.

Re: fs - Brembo Aluminum 500E calipers

Just a note, these calipers use the same size pads and 300mm rotors as the ATE SL500 cast iron calipers so if you have those already on your 500E500 this makes for a relatively easy swap.

If these do not sell I guess I'll refinish and use as bookends.

Will they fit under the 16" r129 wheels?

All this brake stuff is a bit lost on me. I already have twin piston calipers up front and r129 control arms on the 87 td. It's not clear what these calipers would buy me in terms of performance, apart from some unsprung weight savings. Do they use bigger rotors or something?

Yes these will clear both the early R129 15 hole 16” as well as the 16” 8 holes wheels. They use the same 300mm rotors and pads as the ATE cast iron calipers. Yes they will save you unsprung weight and visually they are very good looking.

Re: fs - Brembo Aluminum 500E calipers

Atg, which "twin piston calipers" do you currently have? What year/model R129 was the donor, or are they from something else?

Considering how rare these calipers are, I'm surprised they're still available. They would also be desirable for anyone with a 500E that has the iron Ate 300mm calipers, who wants to return it to "as delivered from the factory" condition.

I will get the part number but I will have to pull the wheel as I run those dinner plate 16" 15 hole wheels.

Rotors seem to be 11.5" which should be 292mm, not 300

atg, those calipers appear to be 294x25, which is correct for a 1993-up .032/.034/etc. What year / model is your car? Those are not correct for any year E500E...

    87td of course =

As previously stated, I haven't paid much attention to brakes. This is mainly because I have never tracked the car. Once the compound turbos are installed and the hot injection pump, there may be more indication for increased stopping power. It would seem that the 320 millimeter rotors and brakes would be perhaps the maximum stock fitment option. I am guessing Wildwood Etc probably have some bolt on options as well, likely not as economical to fit.

AH! It's all making sense now. You have the late M104 front brakes, 294x25.

Yes, the 320x30 Ates (from early SL600, or late 500E/ E500) are the largest that will fit under an R129, 16" wheel.

Great info. Thanks. The car had been modified before I purchased it, so I didnt know if they were r129 or something else.

Do those 300mm calipers need a 500e backing plate? I really need to do some reading on all this. It would be great to find something that bolts to what I have, naturally.

The aluminum Brembos + 300mm rotors bolted up directly to my 1987 300D, no modifications needed other then slight bending of the dust shield.

Ok great. Not cheap, considering my current setup works pretty well, but definitely more reasonable than full race aftermarket. I also like the pseudo-stock look of the 16s.

With the Right pad, some cryo'd/slotted rotors, SRF fluid and braided lines you can get amazing levels of performance out of 300mm's.

To be fair, I'm sure the same is true of the brakes I already have. I doubt there is much performance difference between the 294mm and a 300mm. One of the fronts is dragging though, so time for a rebuild regardless.

Ok I found cryo slotted front rotors at rock auto for 88 bucks a copy.

Are those sl600 rear rotors the same as the later 500e?

SL600 rears are 300x22. Only Euro-spec late 500E/E500 have those, not USA. All USA models had 278x24 rears for all years production on both the .034 and .036 chassis.

Cryo fronts for $88 sounds awfully cheap, what brand are those? I'm partial to OE/Genuine rotors, get them cryo'd locally if desired.

Stop tech, whatever that is. Looks like the aftermarket division of Centric.

Thanks. I thought so too. As long as they are true they should work for me. I poked around on Instagram and found lots of motorsport people using their brake upgrade kits, so it's not completely wacky to try I think:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Ba6yX_wH...d=cyzl8oceto71

I bought their street pads to go with, so we shall see how it all stops.

Now where can I find those Subaru stainless brake lines gsxr was talking about?

Deerfield precision makes a nice product.

Fwiw, you can go Really aggressive on a Cryo rotor...like silly aggressive. I suspect that cryo rotor will eat into that street pad pretty fast.

Order up some SRF while you're at it

    SRF en route.

Those porterfield R4s seem quite aggressive. Jeff was talking about liking some yellow box stuff, but I cannot recall the manufacturer. I just didn't want too much grab on the way to work when they are cold. But I have the stock 300TD booster, which has kind of a hard pedal anyway, so maybe it would be OK

They're not grabby. I've run R4's (track version), EBC Yellows, Pagid's World Endurance series compound and Carbotech's on the street. I would call any of them Grabby by any means

They lasted One Day at Barber Motorsports... we had to go to the auto parts store and buy street pads for day 2. Went through 3 sets in about 6 hours. That sucked...

However, since then I made the switch to the Pagid World Endurance formulation....$350 a set but Damn do they work and LAST. Super Awesome.

Ok so the threaded boss on the brembos is 0.1" thicker than the boss on the 294mm wagon calipers that came off the car.

Should I be looking for bolts that are 0.1" longer? Brembos are aluminum, which would seem to want a few more threads of engagement...

If no one knows I will do some sleuthing in epc for part numbers and report back.

No need to worry about 0.1" difference for bolt length. That would probably be a half-turn difference? Remember to use blue threadlock on the caliper mounting bolts...

Thanks. I took a look at the one I had not mounted yet, and realized the aluminum caliper bosses are not threaded all the way through. So the threaded portion is similar in length.

I will say that pressure bleeding a vented system doesnt work very well. I had my dad mash down on the vent caps while pumping, but really it did not hold air or fluid in the reservoir. So a lot ran out. I will order new caps tomorrow and hope they hold pressure better. If so, they should be standard parts for anyone to order before doing brake work.

I also had poor luck changing the brake lines. The caliper ends came free easily, but the other end was problematic. My fittings appeared to be imperial and I used flare wrenches on both sides of the joint, but stopped for fear of rounding the little steel line barrel nut off before anything came loose. Maybe I am missing something? Rear lines look ok, but the fronts could certainly use a change.

I track a Lotus Exige S, which is obviously worlds different than a big sedan. I gave Porterfields and Pagids a good go around.

Porterfield didn't offer the right mix I needed. One was a bit too hard, the other was too soft.
I had recurring issues with the transfer layer on Pagids. It would break down far too often, requiring a strip of the rotors. And another rebedding. Which totally sucked. But I did like the bite and feel of the Blacks up front and Blues in the back.

Mikey Jr at Carbotech was very responsive to getting the pads right on the Lotus. Fine tuned the thickness. Offered great pricing for us track rats.
The XP10/XP8 was a great combo for me. I was getting similar longevity out of my brake pads and tires. Maybe 12-15 days from the Carbotechs and Hoosier R6s.

Consuming a set of brake pads in one day at Barber is rough. There's only two big brake zones and a handful of minor ones. Such a great momentum track.

This is not uncommon... replace the reservoir rubber cap(s) over the level sensor, and it should be fine. Old/cracked ones tend to leak under pressure when bleeding. New ones should be fine.

Soak the fittings with Kroil, or your favorite penetrant. Don't damage the hard line, it will be a PITA to repair or replace. These usually aren't seized, but you might be especially lucky.
