Long term POR 15 / Waxoyl / Zinc anti rust treatments test

    Hi all,

This is something I have wanted to do for years. Whenrestoring my w124’s in our climate I have to deal with rust quite a lot. Some ofit is surface rust only and some areas require welding. In either case I finishthe repair using a variety of zinc paints etc. Some of these products willstate all sorts of 1000 hour salt spray test passes and what not.

But those are when the products are used in ideal lab conditions. What about a mere mortal applying the product in the their garage on alreadyrusty steel – how does each compare then?

This is a simple test I want to do tosee how the products I have been using for many years hold up side by side on apiece of rusty mild steel that I will wire brush, tape off sections, treat andleave out on a an area of flat roof at my home for full exposure to weather formonths or possibly years to see which product or combination can hold off the rustthe longest.

I will be prepping and coating the steel later this week toleave out. These are my initial thoughts as to what I am going to be using:

1: 2x spray coats of hammerite
2: 2x rattle can coats of Wurth Zinc Perfect
3: 2x coats of rust converter – unpainted
4: 2x coats of rust converter – 1x Stone chip coatingfollowed by 1x coating of Waxoyl underbody seal
5: 2x coats of Wurth Zinc paint 300 brushed on
6: 2x coats of Wurth Zinc paint 300 brushed on 1x Stone chipcoating followed by 1x coating of Waxoyl underbody seal
7: POR15 3x stage system with 2x top brush coats. (POR 15Cleaner + metal prep solution used prior)
8: POR15 3x stage system with 1x top brush coat. (POR 15Cleaner + metal prep solution used prior)+ 1x spray stone chip coating
9: 2x coats of rust converter, 1 brush coat of Wurth zincpaint, 1x stone chip coating followed by 1x coating of Waxoyl underbody seal (This is what I am intending to use on my 320CE resto)

If anyone has suggestions I will try to accommodate it also!I’m not taking this too seriously BTW – It’s just a simple test for me to seeif any products I am using will rust within a couple weeks / months of exposure…..if they do then that’s not a good sign!

Let us know what works best for you!

I'm not in a rust prone area. But for suspension, I've been glass bead blasting to remove the factory paint(no primer), and going with a zinc chromate epoxy primer. Top coating I've been using Imron or epoxy from a spray can.

    It's great!

Thanks for the suggestion! I did try my local paint shop and although they can get zinc epoxy primers they had none in stock. Can I ask is what you use a 2k product? (Hardener mixed in) I may use a primer like that on the shell prior to repaint.

The POR15 kit should arrive today and if it does I will be applying all the treatments to the steel sample tonight so the experiment can begin! I would like some initial "data" ahead of treating the underbody of my 320CE this autumn/ winter
