    sure does look nice.
im curious about those calipers having renntech painted on them.
unfortunately, there is no customer pay data at any mercedes benz dealer for its whole life time.

RENNtech used to sell an Alcon set for some crazy money. They were quoted for my car but the owner at the time passed. I think we’re talking $1500 back in ‘97.

For this one, I’d say, if you’re in the market (1) make a call, then (2) book a flight to Maine.

    maw

P.S. I'm sorry, that was $4,100 + 4 hours labor, in '99 for the Alcon 13" front brakes from RENNtech. No wonder he passed. That was the last thing they quoted for this car. Evidently, after having given them $10k over 2 years, he decided they were getting carried away with the brakes. Plus, he'd already done the One Lap of America on the stock Brembos, so there's an argument that he didn't need them.

Maine is a special kinda place. Not an easy destination for air travelers.

    Might I suggest a drive?

Through the EPC, anyone does. Also DataMB.com

A few folks do have access to a database of all 500Es produced, using information privately compiled from EPC data into a single database.

I have kept continual records since mid-2003 on 500Es that have come up for sale or have otherwise popped up online. This and my personal anecdotes and observations of them, along with screen shots of the eBay or web ads/auctions, forms my “personal database.”

    That’s 15 full years of record-keeping.

When a car comes up for sale and is posted here, I often add to the thread the notes I made about it long ago in my personal database, as well as posting the PDFs of past auctions and such.

It’s part of the historical record of each car that I have. Often they go through three and four and five owners over the years.

I also track all cars that I find out are scrapped, wrecked and de-commissioned.

I pulled a Carfax on the car.

It's clean. Doesn't indicate any changes of ownership, but there have been several.

    Lifetime Maine car.

Some additional information I can share:

This is a consignment sale. The Dealer is Ray Ayers @ http://ayereuropeanauto.com

Service records are available. Including invoices for the Renntech bits... CF airbox and brakes.

The seller has taken and sent pics which I requested. Overall, he has been very responsive. He also furnished a copy of a recent PPI.

I've invested a few hours into vetting this car. I'm 95% sure that this one isn't going to be "the one" for me. I don't want to publicly post anything which the seller has sent to me, but I will certainly share via PM my notes and thoughts about this particular car.

In this market, and especially compared to others cars at this price point, I think it's probably a "Buy." But I don't think it's a screaming deal, especially given the location.

I've spoken with Ray as well, and asked GSXR to post the pictures and documents he sent me. I think it's a screaming deal, actually. But reasonable minds can differ. He's got over a half dozen inquiries, if that's any indication. If you don't get it now, next time you see it, it'll be at least $10k more, is my guess. A couple of doctor owners after the original one who spent the RENNtech money, is what it sounds like. Last owner bought in '13, only took it to car shows. I told him I'd recount our conversation and post the stuff. He was ok with that.

Thanks, Gerry and GSXR. These are what the Seller provided. Ace10 may have more. Seller says the car has never seen snow, etc. But it does look like some owner may live or have lived on or near dirt roads. I think someone is going to be happy with this one.

    Cheers,

    maw

BTW, Ray also has a low miler over there (sub 30k) that he’s really high on. But he’s known this one longer. That’s all the news that’s fit to print.

This car remains unsold. Three months on the market feels like a long time at this price/condition. Has anybody done additional investigation?

In a couple of days the snow will be falling in Maine. lol

This one has made its way onto BaT

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...-benz-500e-16/

Probably a few months too late to take advantage of the crackpipe bidding that we witnessed on that venue over the summer.

    1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E

This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic over Anthracite leather and powered by a 5.0L V8 mated with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The car is equipped with AMG wheels and a RENNtech air box, ECU chip, and front brake calipers. This W124 shows 127k miles and is offered by the selling dealer with the factory wheels and brake calipers, service records, a stamped maintenance booklet, a clean Carfax report, and a Maine title.

The 500E was assembled by Porsche and fitted with a special front air dam, flared fenders, and side skirts. This example is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic with grey lower body cladding, and the seller notes areas of crazing in the clear coat. The 500E featured a wider track and lower ride height than other W124 models. This example wears AMG 17″ 5-spoke wheels mounted with Firestone Firehawk tires.

The interior is finished in Anthracite black leather and features heated front seats with memory function on the driver’s side as well as an electrically-operated rear shade. A factory Becker cassette deck remains installed in the dash. The 6-digit odometer shows approximately 127k miles. The 5.0L M119 V8 is paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and was rated at 322 horsepower with 354 lb-ft of torque in stock form. This example has been modified with a RENNtech E-Prom performance chip and air box, and the factory parts are included in the sale. The selling dealer notes that the wiring harness has not been replaced. Recent service included replacement of the illumination module and a new distributor cap and rotor. Additional underbody photos can be seen in the gallery below. RENNtech front brake calipers replace the factory units.

The Carfax report list no accidents or other damage and shows Maine registrations from new through 2014, with no further entries after that point. The factory wheels and brake calipers, service records, RENNtech parts receipts, and a stamped maintenance booklet are included in the sale.

Ends On Thursday, November 15 at 12:20pm

The PPI report some of us received is neither mentioned nor shown in the auction. Remains to be determined if the possible issues that were uncovered were remedied or are simply not being disclosed.

This was believed to be a consignment sale. Not mentioned.

IMO, the seller would have earned a significant return on investment if they had cleaned up the underside.

Auction includes many, many new pictures, especially of the interior.

    Sometimes 744 just looks bleh.

This is one of those times. The photos don’t really do it justice.

I agree this car just doesn’t jump out at you. Is there more than one silver color? It does not look like ‘Brilliant Silver’ the paint does not pop! like 600Eric’s.

But I have to say IMOP, basically a one Owner car w/ 125K miles and asking $24K it’s a bargain. They can keep the Rentech airbox and chip. The 17” AMG wheels do nothing for its appearance. For residing it’s whole life in Maine I think the underside is in outstanding shape.

The brilliant silver does not photograph well in direct sunlight, the problem here. I agree it looks like a desirable car.

I agree, and continue to call this car a screaming deal. Continue. Flip-worth even. Buy it, detail it, remove and sell non-stock items for an additional $3k, then list it for $30k. It’s a lot of work for $10k, but that’s a flipper’s life so I don’t see why they’re not all over it. In any event, one to watch IMO.

IIRC, however, the seller has maintained the car for at least two owners, both doctors.

It's been on the market for five months. No takers.

Flippers do nothing but search for vehicles which have enough meat on the bone to make it worth their time and effort. This car would have been snapped up if that was the case.

Not saying it's a bad car. Not by any means.

The car was maintained by European Auto Works which had a previous affiliation with the seller... regarding maw's recollection of prior service provider.

In terms of needs noted earlier in the year, prospective buyers should be mindful of cat converter issue, engine oil leak(s), PS leak and wheel clearance against brake calipers. Working status of A/C is unknown.

Yep, I think a flipper would have to get this for around $20 to have enough meat to list it for $35K, and sell it for $30K actual. Not enough meat on the bone at $24K + required maintenance + buffing costs.

I agree that it is a screaming deal compared to the higher-mileage cars we are seeing listed for $30-35K.

I missed this... what's the concern with the catalytic converters?

If the wheels don't touch the calipers, they're fine. I've had as little as ~2mm air gap on some of my setups. Zero issues. Now, the calipers may cause issues when fitting different wheels (or, may prevent the fitment of stock wheels) but IMO that's expected with any brake upgrade.

Items noted on the checklist-style PPI report.
No real details given. Just a negative mark indicated with limited notations.
I listed what was on the report.

The calipers appear to show wear marks from the wheels.

    EDIT
I have no first hand knowledge of this car. But I did a thorough first round of vetting when it came on the market.

BaT auction ends in 3.5 hours.

Bidding and commentary has been lethargic. Sitting at $13500 and 26 comments. Yet there are 374 watchers.

I´m curious how many E500E are still exisiting worldwide.
I asked in Flensburg this year and they confirmed that 532 cars are still registered in Germany.

It kinda depends upon when they want to sell it, but... I understand the sentiment. And I'm likely overstating the value of some of the items that could be removed and sold when the OE ones are replaced (wheels, brakes, Airbox... things are likely worth more off the car). But I'm not that kind of speculator, so I don't have a dog in that hunt.

I think any particular weakness in this car has to do more with location and state of the market than the car itself. Again, just my perspective. But as GVZ has pointed out numerous times in the past, the 500E market is razor thin, and it could be that if you're not a flipper of these, you're not in the market because you already have one (or two), or have already had one (or two). What we've seen this year seems to be flippers and international sales, and not much else. My car was offered and not sold multiple times before I came along. It happens. And who's going all the way to Maine to look at a car?

No sale at 17,500. Took a stab at 16,500. Will do some more research on this car through the dealer.

Pretty likely you can meet in the middle. At ~$20k it looks like a pretty good deal. Just plan on the usual ±$5k in deferred maintenance.

I like the commenter who asked about driving it from Maine to Michigan.

I'm looking out my windows at 6" of fresh snow here in VA.

I liked the commenter asking for dyno data on the airbox... must not be familiar with this fourm.

And the comment about the airbox looking nasty, lol... that's a relatively good looking one!

    123K miles? Nope. That's $10K deferred maint, not $5K.

    You need to internalize the rule. >100K miles = $10K; <100K miles = $5K
