This car was not previously in my personal database, so I have no detailed record of it prior.

I attached DataMB data card + link, and copy of the CarFax report, to the original post, as appropriate.

Looks like a nice car. Probably a little overpriced but time will tell. Apparently the one in Arcadia has a deposit pending an inspection. 80K mile cars are on the move.

I wonder how many cars Gerry currently has in his database? New to the board cars are showing up recently, both this car and the Arcadia car are new meat for Gerry. With approximately 10,500 cars built worldwide consumption, you always wonder how many copies are left on the road. Do we think 1/2 are left?

I have about 900 cars in my personal database, and there are probably another 150 or so with detailed information on this site that I haven't added to the database.

Definitely I have more than half of the cars that were imported to the US market, in the database. Remember, though, that I only use the following to capture cars for my personal database:

    • "For Sale" ads, including eBay/Hemmings/private dealer/Craigslist/500Eboard posts where the VIN is included. These are 100% publicly available information
    • VINs that 500Eboard members pass on to me for various cars they come across (typically these are E500 Limited / AMG E60 models), such as JDM auctions and the like
    • VINs that people (proactively/willingly) provide me for their own car

I do not ask people for the VIN number of cars that they typically own. For example, I have never asked long-term owners like Jimbo or Glen for the VIN numbers of their cars. If they want to give them to me, then fine, but I would not generally ask an existing owner for their VIN.

If an advertised car sells, and someone here claims it and/or starts an OWNER thread, then typically if I remember to, I'll add a notation to the existing "For Sale" entry in the database for the car, that such and such a 500Eboard member purchased the car. This is the only way that I attach owner information to a specific VIN, and it is (again) 100% public information that people post when they buy or sell a car.

Occasionally, very occasionally, someone will send me a PM or post their VIN in a thread here, in the context of asking a question or getting more information about their car. Most often, this is an inquiry by a new owner about whether I have prior records about their car. Sometimes I will update or create an entry in my personal database if this happens (if I have time/remember to) mainly just to record the VIN, or if I have an existing record, I'll update it to note that the request was made.

Sometimes folks also send me photos of cars they come across in parking lots, mechanic shops, or such. When available, they will sometimes take a photo of the windshield VIN plate. Again, this is for database recording purposes only (color, location, etc.) and contains no personally identifiable information, as the car was randomly come across....and the VIN is "public" information as it's viewable from outside the car, as designed and mandated by US law.

I have never made a blanket, open-ended request of anyone to provide me with their VIN, as this is not public information. If they provide it to me on their own, fine. Or if they post it publicly, then it's fair game to record.

Lastly, I do sometimes get information from folks when cars go to auction (such as Mannheim or Copart). Again .... public information and the online ad is recorded as a PDF along with relevant information.

There were 1,528 cars brought into the US market out of the 10,479 produced. After 15 years, between the cars that folks own here (many if not most of which I do not have VIN information on and thus don't have records of) and the cars that have have come up for sale, I'd say we probably have over 1,000 (more than two thirds) of them covered.

Of the 1,528, my estimates range that better than 75% of the US cars are still on the road. I'd say that probably 20-25% have been wrecked or junked/decommissioned over the past 25 years. That's just a guesstimate, as I do have some records of cars that have been wrecked/scrapped, but not that many. More than a few folks have posted threads on this forum about their car being hit/wrecked as well, which is generally recorded.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

    Hi,
You are doing a great job with this database Gerry and you are right not to ask for VIN numbers. In Europe, and France especially, people usually don't like to share personnal informations about their cars and VIN numbers are part of it. Don't ask me why, I couldn't tell...

Paranoia associated with the excessive media hype about security risk.

Yeah... I’d be in Maine for half the money + RENNtech mods (ASR delete, brakes, chip, airbox if you care) and a Seller who’s known the car since the first owner (and is a pleasure to deal with). But maybe that’s just me. The black interior there is a bonus, and the stock brakes and wheels pay for your transportation and PPI (plus dinner and hotel).
