Thought the Pilot Sport 4S was the hot ticket at the moment? Free shipping from the 'Rack:

Vredestein Ultrac Satin or if you want an all season, the Vredestein Quatrac 5.

There are VERY few options left for the stock tire size. Conti DWS-06 is a decent choice on a budget.
    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...omCompare1=yes

Michelin only has a couple of grand-touring tires available now. Only Michelin with correct speed rating appears to be the Primacy HP, but they only have 1 left, in case you want a new spare tire:
    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...omCompare1=yes

TR link to all 225-55-16, note that quite a few tires in that size do not have the correct speed rating (minimum V-rated).
    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...earDiameter=17

There almost no name-brand, high-performance summer tires available in that size now, since the Conti DW went NLA.

I just put a set of the Vredestein Ultrac Satin on my 92 500E it is a Z-speed rating and 95W which is the same load index as the original tires from back in the day. I have been very impressed with the Vredestein tires and the price is very reasonable.

They have really been picking up the slack with classic size performance rated tires lately. That one's worth some thought.

If you want to stick with summer tires, the BFG G Force Sport Comp 2 are round (so many tires aren't) and sharp handling. BFG in the USA is Michelin, so at least you get good construction and usually some performance oriented previous model Michelin carcass. I don't like directional treads, but beggars can't be choosers in this size in the USA anymore.
The Conti EC DWS is perfectly acceptable for HP all season, but If you're going that route you have other alternatives as well...

Due to the Michelin connection, I'd bet jeff0093 can hook you up with the BFG tires for a good price. He's a tire dealer and has served others here before. Send him a PM and get his advice.

There are still a few Conti DW's leftover from 016 production if you look hard enough and yes they are discontinued so it would be prudent to buy 5 in case you have one go bad.

Link? I haven't seen any for sale in over a year now. Tire Rack unloaded theirs last spring.

2016 production is pretty fresh, most of the time when you buy tires they tend to be 1-3 years old based on the DOT datecode.

Yes, there is a DW replcaement... the "ExtremeContact Sport". Unfortunately, the ECS does not offer 225-55-16 size. Closest is 225-50-16, which is 1 inch smaller diameter.

Another all season option in the stock size would is the General GMAX AS-05. I don’t have any personal experience with the -05’s, but I have a 17” set of the -03’s which is a very competent and reasonably priced tire. According to Klink, General is owned by Continental.

It's not on Conti's own website either in 225/55. They still DO show the EC DW in 225/55 as if it was still in production, though it probably isn't...

Re: Michelin tires- what to get? PS2, S3, S4??

The General does indeed appear to be a good alternative, but it is an all-season comparable to the still-available Conti DWS-06:
    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...omCompare1=yes

Still not many options outside Vredestein, maybe, for a DW / ECS summer performance tire in 225-55-16. Speaking of which, I Googled trying to find Vredestein Ultrac Satin and couldn't find a single vendor in USA. Lots in Europe though. Anyone have a link to a USA vendor that sells Vredestein Ultrac Satin in 225-55-16?

Call Vredestein direct or use their dealer locator. They have tires in stock here in the USA. My dealer is KAM Specialties 610-777-9702.

For a summer tire, yes, the DW. Since Conti doesn't yet show it completely NLA on their site, you might be able to find some if you pester enough Conti dealers, as Sam noted back in post #12. I have 2 sets in stock size and have been very happy with them. And, no issues at the dragstrip with traction, at ~22psi, with a healthy warmup.

If you don't need a max-performance tire, there's the DWS-06, the General, and the various Michelin touring tires to choose from. If not driving aggressively, you probably don't need the DW (or similar max-performance tyre).

I really liked the DW in this application, but your chances of finding them are slim to none, and even then, you don’t want to be SOL if you have one get irreparably damaged. I like the DWS 06 just fine, just not as much is the DW. Apparently, Michelin is not bringing the Primacy HP successor to the US in this size, so my favorite is gone, which I know, is exactly the problem you are currently facing.

Since I avoid all season tires unless I need them on a certain car (I DO have the DWS 06 on one of my DD cars, for example) I would try to get my hands on those Vredis just to try them out. That’s just me. They are performance oriented, not cold temperature biased, and don’t have a directional tread, so that checks all my basic “like” boxes.

Also, as I already pointed out, I have had some good luck over the years with the BFG comp sport TA, the only issue there being the directional tread which can get a little noisy and limits convenient rotation options to balance wear, etc.

I run Goodyear F1 on the 500E but have to say I love the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 on my CLK55. Tried a lessor tire at the suggestion of Discount Tire, took them back after 400 miles...felt squirrelly as can be. The guys tried to sell me what they had and not what I asked for...then lied to me and said nothing was available in the state of Texas...went to my local DT shop and they had them in stock! They were happy to exchange them when I told them the story about their store in Lubbock.

I've run two sets of Conti DW on my 500 for the last 4-5 years and have been very happy with these tires. Had Conti DWS 06 on E55 and C class and have not had great luck. Premature cupping made them growl to the point I just replaced with 50% tread left. Installed S3's the other day and I'll report back after they get some run time. Great looking tires very aggressive.

Ouch - that is a bummer. Was it just noise that became annoying, or were there other problems too? I never owned any DWS-06 tires, just a couple sets of the previous DWS which have been fine.

Also, was there a reason you went with the DWS-06 (all season) instead of the ECS (ExtremeContactSports, summer tire that replaced the DW)?

Indeeed. Tire threads are the new oil thread.

Too true. Complicating things on tire threads, is that some tires are not available in the desired size, causing additional headaches... it's easy to say "oh, get the PS4!" but if not available in your size, then what?

While we're going there, what viscosity dressing should one apply to the sidewalls of your new Michelins?

I just ordered Conti ECS's for my 744 car, having them installed this weekend. I was originally going to get Michelin PS4S but for some reason, the rears weren't available.

How about air vs. nitrogen? I have been running nitrogen for over 12 years.

I think oil and tires get so much attention because they are some of the easiest tasks of keeping these on the road.
These two items are most common to ALL of us, whereas an evaporator job is not as common, and will not be undertaken by many. Certainly NOT by me.

I am in the process, although have not pulled the trigger, of ordering DWS06s for the 93'. Couldn't find the DW.

I like Bridgestone Pole Position S04 tires. For a super high performance tire, they are quiet and ride well.
I put them on two of my cars - my MB and my P-car.

I have the Michelin Pilot Super Sports (the immediate precursor to the new Pilot 4S) on a Volvo wagon --- and the MPSS is a wonderful tire --- perhaps a tad nicer ride. But, I find the MPSS sidewall shape to be less protective of the rim than the Bridgestones. As well, the MPSS was 25% more expensive than the Bridgestones --- I imagine that the New Pilot 4S is still more expensive.

Re: Michelin tires- what to get? PS2, S3, S4??

I've had good success with the DWS and now the DWS06 (on my S55). But, beware the country of manufacture. Fortunately the sizes I want generally end up being manufactured in Germany. But they are manufactured elsewhere. And I've been warned to insist on those made in US or Germany, as some of the others seem not to hold up so well. That advice came years ago, and I've simply adhered to it, since it came from someone who saw enough volume to notice the difference.

See, here... https://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec....autoModel=500E ... and notice how none of the 18" come out of Germany (e.g., Cole's E55). Fortunately, my S55 tires are 19" and generally come out of Germany, whereas my 500E set came out of the US.

    All FWIW.

Thanks maw! I pulled the trigger on the DWS06 because they are made in Germany.

I hope they work well for you Trae. You look like you’re on stock size. I’ve never had any problems out of them, 4 cars and 7 (oops, make that 9) years (jeez). Not so many miles, but they’ve been on my 500E since I bought it in 2011. I first got them on my S55 back in ‘09.

Just the noise necessitated replacement, really loud on C class

Needed 06's for some winter driving.

That's interesting my 06's were made in Portugal. Thanks for the heads up!

If one was considering the factory 225/55/16 I would consider the new Michelin Premier A/S

Re: Michelin tires- what to get? PS2, S3, S4??

Lurking here, ultimately, I think the aversion to all season tires is like the aversion to all wheel drive cars and the aversion to paddle shifters. They are mindset relics of a foregone era where “performance” in cars meant front engine, RWD, stick shifts and summer tires, ONLY. Seriously. And funny, Porsche is the car company that almost single-handedly sent all of those old axioms to the grave. Seriously. What the GVZ Automobile magazine article shows, in the breach, is that unless you’re on the track, you just don’t need max performance summer tires anymore. Not only that, what you give up is more than what you gain, unless you’re on the track. I think that’s what we’re seeing here. But maybe I’m wrong.

My M3 came with max performance summers on it. As soon as I switched to the Conti DWS, I was like, “oh that’s much better. Maybe not going too fast through a turn, but I don’t do that every day anyway.” Since I’ve fitted new rear shocks on her (OEM), even that got better. Seems to me the looseness I was attributing to the tires was tiring rear shocks. Same experience with new hydrolegs on the 500E.

So my version of this is, if your car is having handling issues that you want to “fix” with stickier tires, fix the suspension first. You’ll probably decide you actually like the all season tires better. And your suspension will be up to snuff.

What exactly do you mean by "new"?
I put a set of these (215/55 16) on my coupe ~15 months/15K ago, and have been quite pleased, with (enough) performance, (low) noise and (excellent) wear. Only (minor) issue, they look all-seasony...

Have the tires been changed since then, other than price increasing ~30%?

I've been wrestling with this issue ever since I replaced the original Conti pro contacts on the C class. Those tires were perfectly tuned for the sport suspension and provided just the right balance of performance and comfort. DWS 06 (Portugal) performed well for 10k and then cupped out. S3's are louder but that's what I expected from the aggressive tread pattern. DW's on 500E have really performed well in all aspects.

At the risk of perpetuating this "tire" thread, I switched gears and went with these.
