    C126 evaporator replacement

I just got diagnosed by my local MB dealer that my AC evaporator (or expansion valve) has a leak. The system did not hold pressure, and their "sniffer" gave a positive result under the dash and from the air ducts. There was also some oiliness around the heater box. They gave me an estimate of 4933$ for the work and parts, so I am now gathering a parts list and doing some self-studying on this subject to do it myself once this year's driving season is over.

The local MB dealer did a good job diagnosing the fault, I was quite happy about it. They gave me the following list of parts to replace:

    A0008305058 evaporator
    A126830038464 expansion valve
    A0139974245 seal ring x 2
    A1268300383 receiver drier/accumulator
    A0048206810 pressure switch
    A0139974045 seal ring x 2
    A1409971145 seal

    My questions are:
    - Has anyone done this to 126-chassis? Any tips, HOW-TO's etc? I have the factory workshop manual.
    - What parts to replace "while you're in there" Vacuum pods? Anything else? I think all the flaps work as they are intended to, but should I replace the pods anyway?

    Thanks!

I did it last year. I strongly suggest that you add every vacuum pod to the list, also a new heater core. You are dealing with 30 year old equipment, and you only want to remove the dash once.

This is not a hard job, it is a tedious job. Get a box of plastic baggies, every part removed should be grouped so that it doesn't get lost, and label the bags accordingly. I would also refresh each of the vacuum pod connections as once you move the originals, they will not seal properly. If the car will be inside, roll down the windows, open the sunroof and extend the seats all the way back as far as they go, and extend the steering column back as far as it will go, then un hook the battery. Also consider changing out the ignition switch since you are there. I rebuilt al the foam on the HVAC box as well, and affixed some very strong fabric mesh over the intake of the fresh air inlet, that will prevent debris from entering the box and plugging up the core. I have all of the pics in my owner thread.

Louis, is there a danger the heater core will go NLA? I have all the pods.

Well I suspect not, they are BEHR made and they seem available at everyplace that sells them. If concerned, buy it and keep it in climate control storage. I think that if you run the heater, and the coolant has been properly serviced with the right product - there isn't an issue. When I removed mine, the interior was fine but the connection points had corrosion on the aluminum. I did not take a sawsall to the carcass, but I suspect that it was ready "since you are there"!
