    OWNER - GulfcoastPnut (92 400E)

    Hello from coastal Alabama

I'd like to present my recently acquired, beautiful '92 400E. The previous 3 owners appear to have taken pretty good care of her and she's passed just over 100k miles. I've spent the last month or so catching up on a few things and cleaning up a bit.

I still have a few things to bring up to my liking but I'm incredibly impressed with this ole' girl. I won't make her quite a daily driver as I have 2 others that need exercise and love too but I'm quickly growing to love all of the aspects of this car that all of you know too well.

One more picture just to show off "The Mistress" she shares the garage with.

Welcome! Fine specimen there - What else do you have planned?
Word of caution - you may find soon that the draw of the w124 is too great, and start to prefer the 400E over the 944 for many jaunts.

Nice and welcome to the forum.
What's that thingamajigger under the armrest in the console? Looks like couple of USB outlets with a cup holder?

    Thank you!

I've got a few niggles like inop dash lights (good fuse and bulbs so I've ordered a potentiometer?), a fussy AC that works most of the time, a new stereo to replace the hideous one in the dash and a passenger window with a supposedly blown motor. I'd like to change out the wheels, hate to be typical but I'd really like some version of Monoblocks, I don't intend to max the wheel size though, will probably stick with 16's/17's.

I've already changed out front pads/rotors/sensors, shocks, mounts and gotten new tires and what was good is not awesome. Outside of that it's just a very nice car in good condition so she'll get attention when she needs it and cleaned constantly.

The 944 is my baby, but is already relegated to sunny days as S2 Cabs can best be described as "semi-pervious" and recently the A/C has been giving me fits. I also have a 2016 Turbo Veloster that gets backup duty since I'd much rather drive one of the old girls

That was V1.0 of a little cupholder insert I was tinkering with, I modelled and 3d printed it in ABS. I ended up deciding that the way I had it going took away any other use for the compartment, and that I'd need to get a marine charger if I didn't want to short it out at some point.

V2.0 is in the car now and still has a couple of ways that I might improve the idea, but as is I can tuck it back when not in use, get around it for little things like a charger cable and it's designed to catch any condensation or small splash spills around it.... plus it glows in the darkj

if anyone is interested I'm more than happy to share the model files or the 3d print gcode file for the good of the community.

Welcome! I also believe Monoblocks are the best choice for an 034 due to size restrictions. Very nice work on the cupholder. As a former 944T owner I've always wanted a cab, which improves the styling IMO. I had no knowledge of top issues. Your 034 looks lowered.

Thank you, they aren't "issues" so much as in my experience no matter how gently, tenderly, lovingly take care of 30+ year old convertibles they never seal perfectly. Mine dribbles in at the joints of the rubber just enough to get the seat/carpet wet and that makes me lose sleep thinking about rust so..... I'm sure there are those that are willing to spend the GDP of some small countries to have it utterly perfect but me, not so much.

    Dash lights live again!

it's a good news day son, I managed to replace the potentiometer last night and now all of a sudden I have tons of happy little lit up symbols at night and gauges that I can see, yay!

    Question for the day......
I have the same horrid little white dots inside the gauge cluster that I had in my 944. I assume is a humidity issue? Is there a proper way to remove the plastic gauge face without breaking it so I can rehab in there?

    Thank you all

The white measles in the cluster do seem to be humidity related... pretty common in the southeast. You cannot remove the clear plastic from the cluster housing, the easiest fix is to buy a clean used housing and swap it out. The bigger question will be if you can clean off the existing gauge faces; if not you can swap the complete cluster+guages and adjust the replacement odometer to the correct miles.

But the temperature gage always reads zero. If you spent enough extra for the V8, you got actual numbers on it...
