WTB: Rearview Mirror with HomeLink for a 500SEC

Hello. I had a 560SEC with the HomeLink mirror and what a fantastic piece of modern tech that was. I had to sell the car when I moved overseas, but I have returned and purchased a fantastic 500SEC. The original mirror is fine, but I already miss the HomeLink.

I tried contacting the gentleman who made them but never received a response. Maybe he no longer produces them?

Should someone have one made for 126's they want to sell I am interested or perhaps there is an alternative mirror out there.

Thanks so much. I am located in North Carolina.

I had some issues with the contact form on my site and it was not delivering mail. That issue has been resolved and I have now reinstated the option to purchase W124, W126 and W123 mirrors. You can visit http://mirrors.2phast.com to make a purchase.

Awesome. And yes, will do. The install will certainly be a challenge, but hey, life is a challenge.

Actually its quite easy if you use the tool and follow the instructions and/or watch the W116 install video. The switched 12 volt and ground are right at the sunroof switch.

The mirror is here, sitting on my bookshelf. It will be a bit until I can get to it as i am having real problems trying to identify the cause of a shimmy when I drive 50 mph or more. Having this mirror installed and operating will be a real treat. Thanks so much to 2phast for building one for my SEC.

Thanks for the positive vibe. Do you still need to swap the R107 mirror for a W126? Or did that reference come through and buy it from you?

    Hi Rik —

He ended up buying the 107 mirror off of me and I was happy to let it go. Thank you kindly for making the match !!

I’ll reach out to you next time I’m in Seattle on business. I’m out there every two months or so.

    Cheers,
    Gerry

Good to hear. Let me know if you need a W126 mirror in the future.

Dont sweat it. I've installed 3 of Rik's mirrors. If I can do it, anyone can. The instructions are foolproof and straightforward.

I'm good on my C126 for many years now. Would love to do one on my G320, but it's a special longer stalk, and I need to find the right stalk part.

I have watched the w116 tutorial video on the install and it does scare me, but I'll do it anyway. I will try and make time for is the last saturday of this month.

Nah, its just as easy as shown in the video. In the past, trying to force the mirror in the socket was a real pain, but if you use the tool its easy. You will need a VOM to find your switched 12 volt power.

Re: WTB: Rearview Mirror with HomeLink for a 500SEC

Hi, I will be attempting this soon. Possibly this weekend. I have a GEN I SEC with the Moonroof control below the dash, not above the window near the rear-view mirror. I really do not want to remove the headliner as I know it is beyond my abilities.

In your w116 video you seem to go across to the passenger side, down the C pillar and towards the door for switched 12 volt access. Do you know if that would be the same on my 500 SEC?

    Thanks much!

Re: WTB: Rearview Mirror with HomeLink for a 500SEC

I have not worked on a SEC, but I suspect you should be able to do something very similar without removing the headliner. Probably just remove the sun visors, rear view mirror and the mirror mounting plate, that should loosen up the headliner enough so you can get your power wire under it. You may also want to check your wire bundle up in the headliner to see if there is a switched 12volt power. On the W201/W124 the only switched 12 volt power is the sunroof switch, so I do make certain assumptions about other vehicles, which may not be 100% accurate.

Just an update that it installed quite similar to how the 116 video showed. Same routine. Switched 12 volt was in the same place. My mirror is IN and i am loving it. The only negative is that it wobbles a bit. Not a lot, but the base isn't as tight at I'd like it. Close enough though.

Is the metal bracket bent or not screwed in tightly? This is the bracket that comes with the car, not the mirror.

Re: WTB: Rearview Mirror with HomeLink for a 500SEC

I assume he is referring to the amount of tension on the ball of the bracket. These mirrors use a ball/socket type of mount and the ball of the bracket snaps into the socket, then a spring clip goes over the socket to hold the ball tight. Unfortunately, these items are not available, so I have to re-use the existing spring clip. The clip has to be spread apart a bit and I have a modified tool to expand and install the clip, but they never are as tight as when new, just too much stretching, bending etc. I get them on as tight as possible, but they are never as tight as I would like. Gentex has had at least three different changes in the clip design, this one is the second generation and it has been superseded by a really heavy duty spring clip, they are a bitch to get off and reinstall, but at least they are reusable without a loss of tension.

Of course, if the actual mounting base for the bracket it not tight, then the whole bracket/mirror can vibrate, so be sure to check that.

Everything looked okay to me, it just has some wiggle room now that it is installed. Front to rear wiggle. Not side to side. I wouldn't want to take it apart and do it again for fear of it being worse. Frankly, I think it's fine as is, despite it not being perfect. I can live with it.

Sounds like the mounting plate is not fully seated. This has happened to me a few times as well. If you do remove the mirror, remember to hold it near the top of the bracket only.
