FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 78kmi, BaT auction (Madison, NJ)

Wow - condition - can the miles be correct??

    VIN = WDBEA36EXNB730807

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...-benz-500e-10/

    No Reserve: One-Owner 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E

This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E shows just over 78k miles and was purchased new by the current owner. The car is one of 1,528 examples imported to the US between 1991 and 1994. Power is supplied by a 5.0-liter DOHC V8 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, and the car is said to remain stock apart from a radar detector and immobilizer. A stamped maintenance booklet and service records are included, and this 500E is now being offered for sale at no reserve by the current owner’s son with a clean Carfax report and a clean New Jersey title.

Assembled by Porsche, the 500E features fender flares, revised bodywork, and a lower ride height compared to other W124 models. According to the seller, this example retains its original finish, and no accidents are listed on the included Carfax report. A large dent is present on the rear driver-side corner, and rust is evident in the rockers, fender flares, and around the passenger door sill. Factory 16” slotted alloys wear a mismatched set of Pirelli and Michelin tires, two of which the seller states are old and require replacement. The rear windshield rubber molding is additionally said to be aged and the power antenna does not work.

Powered and heated seats are trimmed in black leather, and wear is noted on the driver side. A radar detector and immobilizer were added, though the factory Becker Grand Prix stereo is retained. The car is equipped with a rear sunshade, which occasionally gets stuck when retracting. Cracks are noted in the burlwood trim, and the headliner is sagging. Just over 78k miles are shown on the odometer. The CD changer, air conditioning, and driver-side rear window are not functional, and the passenger-side rear window cannot be controlled from the center console switch.

The 5.0L DOHC V8 produced 322 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque when new and is linked to a 4-speed automatic transmission. A diagnostic connector was replaced in June, and the seller notes a squeaking from the suspension. Additional maintenance has included:

    • August 2014 @ 77k miles – Oil and filter, air filter, repair power steering leak, two new tires, new battery
    • January 2008 @ 70k miles – Oil and filter
    • August 2006 @ 67k miles – Coolant sensor
    • July 2006 @ 67k miles – Distributor caps and rotors
    • September 2005 @ 66k miles – Service A/C, tires, oil and filter
    • January 2004 @ 65k miles – Battery
    • June 2003 @ 65k miles – Oil and filter
    • August 2001 @ 61k miles – Oil and filter, transmission fluid and filter, spark plugs
    • July 2001 @ 59k miles – Rotors and pads, V-belt
    • May 2001 – Drain tank, fuel filter
    • June 2000 @ 53k miles – 60k-mile service, alignment, new distributor

That car is in sad shape. Looks like the original Owner just drove it into the ground. It’s a typical “RUST BELT CAR” that’s been driven in winter and left outside in the elements a lot. Can’t imagine trying to bring it back.

So, Jersey has a nice tax rate? They also must have a very high “scrap out your car rate”

Word has it that all the phony posturing by high tax states to get charitable giving schemes ramped up to help keep the SALT limits from forcing residents to move out of state will soon get IRS guidance to the contrary.

Wow! Blue and white jersey plates! I haven’t seen those in years.

By the looks of it, it hasn’t been registered since ‘10?

    Unbelievably sad shape

Yeah, that car is in obviously horrible shape, but it's listed NR and by selling on BaT, the son shouldn't have to answer too many questions as it's all laid out pretty bare in the pics.

Hopefully the father enjoyed the hell out of that car.

Given than the w124.036 was the father's beater car (80K USD when new!!!), I would like to see the cars that the seller's father kept in the garage.
My beater is a Prius, but somehow I don't think that's really equivalent.

I was hoping to find some discussion on this car here. The miles are nice, interior (leather/dash/cluster) in good shape, pre-facelift, low mile original engine, etc. BUT I can't imagine anyone getting this to restore. The restoration process would involve a lot of mechanical/body work that would make the car less original (to say the least). Not an inexpensive way to get into a 500E. If it stayed at $5K, it would make a great resto/mod candidate. But, the BAT effect will likely push it higher.

Restoring would cost a fortune. And resale value would be diminished post-restoration, because there is now public documentation of how it looks today (i.e., significant rust).

It might be worth a gamble if you want to get into an E500E for cheap, assuming it stays well under $10k. Restoring would not make sense unless 036 values go insane (like, way higher than today). This looks like a driveable beater and when something fails that isn't reasonably fixable (i.e., subframe mount point rotted away, etc) it will be a rolling parts car.

Sad to see in this condition, with miles this low, assuming the odo is accurate.

    Yes assuming accurate.

Thanks for the discussion. Just knowing how much work I have done to get to nice daily driver status on my 400E, I can't imagine this being driveable for very long..

It sold on BAT for $10,005.00. Go figure

PS; Was Jono’s $10K a guess to fix it? Or was he reporting the BAT sale?

Better yet, there were four, count 'em FOUR, bidders at $8k or higher. Bidder #5 topped out at $6600, #6 stopped at $6200.

I'm curious if the sale will consummate. And I'd love to know what the top bidders were planning to do with the car (restore & keep, restore & flip, or drive until it dies?).

And a bunch of the bids were made from recently created accounts with little or no bidding or commenting history. If I were being cynical I’d think there might be some shill bidding over there on BaT.

For the cost of restoring this rusty hulk you could make 3 good cars great.
