    Engine noise question

Hey guys, I haven’t been driving my E500 as much this year and after having an issue starting it I replaced the battery. The car started and then I shut it off and it wouldn’t even crank over. I jacked the car up swapped the spare starter relay I had and the car started. After shutting it off it wouldn’t start again. So I put the original relay back in and the car started. However the same issue reoccured and I noticed that the engine was running weird . There is a vibrating noise and and a drop in idle. I have not done the plastic oiler tube swap and I have listened to videos of m119’s with bad oiler tubes and my issue seems different. The relay I used was from a w124 e420 which im not sure can be an issue as well.

    Thanks for the help.

I'm scared for life by a Feb camshaft experience. Not indexed correctly, wrong diameter journals. Same with their sprockets.
Jon might have some custom ones or call Tom Hanson. There has to be a better solution. ..

    Re: Engine noise question

That is the combo relay for the turn signals / hazard flashers / windshield wiper. AFAIK it has no effect on the starter at all, and also should have no effect on engine operation.

Hmmm weird maybe just a coincidence that the car would turn on when I would swap it out. And jack the car up on an angle. But still doesn’t explain the odd engine noise

Im still getting that weird noise from the engine . Put all
The original relays back and put a new battery the car has been starting fine but making that weird noise. Sounds like a card in a bicycle wheel

    Re: Engine noise question

I would try removing the serpentine belt and starting the engine. If the noise is gone, the source is one of the belt-driven accessories. If the noise is still there, then you have a good mystery...

That is NOT a noise from oil tubes. However it could be an upper chain guide allowing the chain to contact the valve cover. Try pulling the belt first, that's easy.

After any M119 purchase, if you are not absolutely certain the PO recently had the valve covers off for inspection and checked / replaced the upper guides... ALWAYS pull the valve covers and inspect personally! And at the first oil change, drop the lower oil pan to check for chain rail debris. It's not that much work, gaskets are not expensive. I usually pull the lower pan first to see how urgent pulling the valve covers is... if the pan is full of plastic, better pull the valve covers ASAP.

Update I ran the car with belt off And do not hear the noise. I am hearing a subtle noise and play in water pump . I also have alot of play in the power steering pulley . Not sure if this is normal . I will upload videos soon

    Re: Engine noise question

I'd have to compare to my pumps, but from memory, the water pump pulley should have zero play and the PS pump should have near zero.

You have the stock tandem pump and SLS, correct?

EDIT: The noise sounds the same with or without the belt, so it isn't likely to be coming from a belt-driven item.

Has anyone else experienced this noise or has any idea what to start with ?
I was going to start with replacing the waterpump .

Or does it sound like the noise is still there with the belt off???
    Thanks !

The pumps don't seem excessive. I'd need to see as well as hear the alternator. It sounds questionable. I had a new in box Bosch reman recently that was obvioiusly defective.

Also, remember the absolute best way to isolate noise sources is with a simple open hose directing sound into your ears. NOTHING ELSE even comes close to the clarity and accuracy that this method makes available. Nothing.

    Re: Engine noise question

I just checked a few different pumps. My findings:

The water pump shaft should have zero play in any direction. None. Yours looks suspicious in the video, however I don't think it's the source of the noise, since the noise is still present with the belt removed.

The tandem (PS/SLS) pump should have ~1mm axial play (in/out) but zero radial play (side to side). Yours looks normal in the video.

That said, I'd strongly recommend Klink's hose test. You can do a quickie version with a single length of hose to one ear. He has the fancy stethoscope style (I need to get one of those!).

    Re: Engine noise question

It doesn't sound anything like oil tubes in the videos.

Have you pulled the valve covers for inspection? I'm wondering if you might have failing upper chain guides and the chain might be rubbing against the valve cover underside...

    Re: Engine noise question

Well my main mechanic is leaning towards the alternator and it has a more than normal play on the bearing. I myself took the undercarriage off and had a listen and it does sound like that may be the culprit. I did have the car stall on me while I was driving slowly but was able to fire it back up. Im going to start with the alternator first. The process of illimination *

If the same noise is present with the belt removed, it cannot be the alternator.

Then you mean a different sound than we do. The sound your engines does even without the belt on, is weird too. These engines dont sound like that when everything is "ok". Maybe you have a exhaust manifold leak? Or its the chain system?

I concur with others, engine does not sound good with belt off, certainly something appears to be wrong as it is idling like a truck. Either that or the sound is bad on the video. Car should be super smooth with belt on/off although certainly with belt off.
