    FS: 1993 500E 6.0L AMG Conversion, 040 Black/Black, 94kmi, $49k (North Carolina)

ADMIN EDIT: Price reduced to $49k, thread title updated.

This car will be familiar to some of you. More on that below. Up for sale is my 1993 500E in 040 Black.

This car has had a significant amount of work done to it for both upgrades and maintenance. Last year Jono completed the heart transplant with a NOS AMG 6.0L motor which was found in Germany and was documented for sale on this site. Dave sold me an ECU he had for the motor, and the process was underway. Jono can probably tell anyone in more detail what was done to the vehicle and what condition specific items are in, but I will try to give a comprehensive list below.

As you can see through the history on this site, I originally purchased this vehicle, sold it to another board member local to me, and then purchased it back almost 2 years ago. Along the way, the car has seen numerous maintenance and parts upgrades, resulting in where it is now. In the last 12 months, I have only driven the car a handful of times. I love it when I drive it, but it just doesn't get enough use for me to justify keeping it.

I have always hated the "What's it worth?" threads, which often are just ways to bypass the required price listing rules on forums, so I won't break that etiquette here. That being said, I really don't know how to value this car, so I'm taking a stab at it based on what I've seen some other cars sell for, and what I have into this one. I understand that at the end of the day, anything is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it, and what the seller is willing to sell it for.

The biggest item is obviously the NOS AMG motor. But when the motor was swapped, we also did a lot of "while you're in there" work, which includes:
RDM Tech Adjustable Camber Towers (front strut mounts)
AMG OZ 3 Piece Replica Rheels purchased from Thore, a member on this site.
    - 8.5 x 17 et 18 front
    - 10.0 x 17 et 17 rear
    Ceramic Coated Manifolds
    New Coolant Reservoir
    Pre Facelift Hood
    Pre Facelift Grille
    New Engine Mounts
    New Hood Pad
    AMG Shift Knob
New Power Steering Hoses and Insulation
Repaint Lower Cladding along with paint correction throughout body
    Speedometer Cleaning
    Rear Bumper Block Off Plates
    New SLS Valve
    Powder Coated rear calipers
    New Front Fender Well Panel
New Steering Damper, Drag Link, and Tie Rod
    New Strut Bump Stops
    New Radiator Hoses
    New Valve Cover Gaskets
    New Metal Oiler Tubes
    New Rear LCA Bushings
    New Intake Tubes

In addition, the following was previously done:
Replace Upper and Lower Wiring Harnesses
Complete New Stereo with all new wiring, and speakers
For reference, see this thread: https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6734

The car is available next week for PPI's, should someone be interested. The garage it is in is having a new concrete driveway poured tomorrow.

I'm sure I am forgetting things, so please let me know your questions and I will do my best to answer them. Admins, feel free to merge threads if this is improper as a new listing.

Beautiful car, last time I visited Jono he had that engine sitting up on a stand, pretty sure he'd just finished the upgrade and it was ready to drop in. Not sure I'd have the resolve to sell it until I added +1 or 2 to the first odometer digit.

FWIW, even though we never Really got to get into it because the engine was still Fresh the bolstered/added torque on the bottom end was addictive. I'd be pretty willing to bet that this was one of the LAST NOS E60 engines in the world.

Hell of a car, sorry to see you're moving her along!

A long time ago, a bunch of crate motors ended up on Germany EBay, including a few 2.3l 16valve motors for 2k and the the E60 motor. If I remember correctly, the 6.0l was sold for 12k.

The E60 motor I was going to buy sold for 12,000 us dollars without shipping or taxes. The 16 valve motors sold for 2,000 us dollars each. One guy here in the US bought both 16 valve motors and tried flipping the second for a huge profit. In hindsight, I should of just bought all of them.

If I had to guess, the E60 motor I am talking about is the one you picked up, guy doubled his investment.

As a side note, at the time these motors sold, the euro was worth far less than the US dollar, I don't remember in Euro's exactly what these sold for, I just remember the US dollar conversion amount. I might still have the EBay pictures as well, will have to look for them.

What happened to the wood/leather steering wheel and those awesome Recaro C seats?
For fellas with larger/broad shoulders the recaros aren't very comfortable.

We had a beautiful set of stock seats that we installed.

Not sure about the steering wheel

It's still available. I have talked to a lot of really nice people who have shown general interest, but no one has pulled the trigger yet.

I was REALLY hoping it was already sold.

Keeping my mind off it by spending the weekend at Laguna Seca at Rennsport Reunion VI (http://www.weathertechraceway.com/po...ort-reunion-vi)...

Well, kind sir, your mind-game strategy isn't really working is it? You are trying to focus on P-cars to keep your mind off the typ2758, and yet you are posting here

Not the fastest, but the E60 will keep up with an awful lot of newer so-called "fast" cars! It definitely turns the 036 up to "eleven".

Yes i remember these times... dunno if we mean the same and maybe MB sold engines multiple times over the years -i dont know...But what i remember...:
Approx 10 years ago or even further back, back when Ebay was rather new in germany, Mercedes sold a bunch of new boxed engines and gearboxes. I remember us W201 cheap drivers dreaming about even a 500E, with a 5L V8... in germany such high displacement engines are rather uncommon with the masses, unlike in the US. Just as a side notice...
These engines, new 5L M119s LH, 4.2L M119s LH. 6L M119s AMGs KE and LH, 2.3-16V, 2.5-16V, 3.6L M103s KE, 3.6L M104s HFM, 3.4L M104 KE, 3.2L M103 AMG KE, "ordinary" 3L M103 KE and IIRC even 2.3L M103 8V were sold for very cheap money. I remember the 4.2L M119s were sold also for just around 2000-4000€. (There were photo series of people installing these new 4.2L engines in their E420s and following up their dissapointment that after only 40.000-50.000km, the typical M119 issues appeared: Upper chain guides disintegrating, oil-leaks, engine harnesses, and so on...)
The 5L M119s were sold around 5000€ mark IIRC. Bargain if i think about that today... A very few well known people in the german mercedes forums bought many of those engines and years later made some money with selling them. One guy called himself "Eifelgeier" in the Forums and i think he bought some 3.6L AMG and even M119s engines. Not 100% sure though. The 6L M119s were in the 10.000€ range IIRC... So 12.000€ for one of them is very realistic.

JLaa, your analysis is partially right- I ultimately sold most everything because I did end up finding that most satisfying of cars, my current 997 cab. And since I lost my garage space, I can no longer keep a stable (just my 993 turbo and a race miata).

Which brings me back to this 500E w the 6L- if I had a place to park it with regular access I would have already made an offer. Have been racking my brain to figure out where I would keep it and how often I would actually drive it.

JLaa, w a 993 in your garage, I hope you are at RRVI right now! It is Porsche heaven, just checking forums while I wait in line for another cold brew

    Agreed,

If there would have been a way to trade all three of my 500Es for this one. . .

Buying a car that has been through Jono's shop has GREAT benefits!

The "buyer" from eBay never responded to a single message or call, so it's back on the block. Relisted on eBay and willing to entertain offers.

Thanks! It was probably so new, it was not yet displaying in search results. Sorry about the welcher, btw... at least they'll get dinged as a non-paying bidder, since you can't leave negative feedback for buyers (because all buyers are awesome in the eyes of eBay).

Just as an FYI, Ebay is always messing with their programs and sometimes they screw other things up without realizing it.
I have several Mercedes specific searches that I run daily. The last two days they have turned up no new listings.
I have a generic search for all Mercedes models from '74 to '99 and this listing does not show up there. Neither does anything else for the last two days.
Hopefully they realize it and address it soon...

Hoping to sell this before the end of the year, if possible. Price drop to $49k.

Just gotta say....I would love to have this car. Let me know if trades for a white E500 would be considered

I cannot understand how this car is still on the market. Is Oct/Nov a bad time to sell cars or something?

Maybe it's because people don't understand what it's like to drive an 036 with 6L powerplant. Having owned several, believe me when I say it's worth it...

Thanks GSXR! I'm a little baffled as well, but I am obviously biased.

I think timing is mostly at play. It was recently mentioned in another post that now is a typically slow time for automotive sales. Holidays and cold weather turn peoples attention elsewhere. It makes me anxious to look at this bargain.

Sorry, it seems to me there are two main reasons which stop potential buyers.

    1. It is a typical swap, not an original E60 AMG - no code 957 in VIN, no history from the factory.
You need to catch the buyer who considers this car not as a future investment but as the Dreamauto = 500E with the best possible engine.

    2. The picture selection for Ebay page is really really poor.
    - very limited number of photos
    - photo with some rusty? part of new engine
    - the weird looking steering wheel
    - the weird looking gear knob - not mathing other wood panels
    - replica wheels in the description

All these small parts may be Ok for $15к 500E, but for $50k AMG 6.0... I am not sure.

    GLWS!

    Of course it's not an original E60. He's asking 50G, not 150.

The engine is a factory New, a drop in ready AMG E60 engine, when it showed up it was Christmas/Hanukkah/and Festivus all wrapped into one glorious moment. My foreman and I EF'd that engine for over an hour when it was still in the crate.

Steering wheels and shifters take what...an hour or two if you move Slow to change...and that's just personal preference stuff.

I'll comment Again on those replica wheels, once i got a set I was floored at the caliber and quality of them. SO far superior to the originals, lighter, stronger, better built...and I was Really not a fan to start but I came around and was rather bummed when the fellow stopped making it.

Does the advertisement need some work, sure. I'll have to dig in my photos and see if I can find my galleries.

Those are two valid points. The mods on the car are not ones that I would choose and the fact that it is not a "real" E60 will likely scare off many traders and dealers as well. This is not a good time to sell cars and the above average number of 036s presently listed without sales recently bears this out and hurts this offering. I believe this car will sell for or above the asking price easily in the near future barring a bad economic meltdown. Blue Ridge Mercedes nearly rebuilt this entire car to a level beyond what many of the low mileage 5L cars on the market can claim for the same price and you get 6L of power to boot. I doubt this car will go to an investment buyer. For an enthusiast, like me, this is still one of the best buys I've seen on any 036. You simply cannot recreate this for the money.

    Re: FS: 1993 500E 6.0L AMG Conversion, 040 Black/Black, 94kmi, $49k (North Carolina)

The shift knob is a trivial item, which can be swapped out quickly and inexpensively. The aftermarket wheel appears to be thicker and more ergonomic, which is good but it is common with these eastern European companies to use leather that has a hue similar to anthracite and not an actual black, which is what I see in the pictures. Again, thats an easy fix if you want the OE wheel.

The aftermarket AMG's would be iffy in my book, as most are cheaply made and some even dangerous. TUV approval is probably non existent as well. BUT, if Jono says these are "good to go" then I wouldn't worry too much about them. Although, 17" wheels just look too small on the 500e, especially when they are multi piece wheels, they look even smaller. Just my 02.

On the topic of price, well, chances are slim your going to find a true E60 at that price, maybe a AMG of Japan car, but you would have to find it and import once it hits 25 years old. Once it arrives via a re-seller, the price skyrockets, so don't expect to find one where someone else has already done the leg work (cheap that is)

The lack of enthusiastic buyers does say the issue most likely lies with the asking price. No doubt there is at least 50k invested in this project, but a large investment of money into a otherwise, somewhat common 500e, does not guarantee you can recoup your costs. This is quite common though on any normal car that the owner takes to the next level. I have seen 100k show cars sell for a quarter of the build price, not due to lack of quality by any means, its just not a appreciating asset like rare collectible cars.

As mentioned above, code-957 cars in less-than-perfect condition are already north of $100k. The asking price is quite realistic compared to the 957's, IMO. The wheels, shift knob, etc are all picking nits. Don't like them? Replace with whatever floats your boat. And let's not forget that in the current market, a $15k 500E is either a very nice parts car, or a high-mile fixer-upper.

I don't think people understand that engine is NOS and hand-crafted from pure unobtanium. Nor have they driven any 6L M119 to understand the substantially different driving experience.
