I drove and inspected the documents of this car before the seller consigned it with Classic Cars West. If anyone is interested, let me know and I can share my observations about it.

I do not have any interest or anti-interest in this car. I just want to point out that I am not overly fond of this wording in the advertisement. “Essentially?” Can one be “essentially” pregnant or “essentially” alive?

Isn't it "essentually" a three owner car because the seller never makes the distinction that they are the "second" owners who purchased the car in 1995? 222k for $26k?

I define ownership differently than most car salesman.
And with my definition, you would never really know how many owners it has had.
In addition, you don't know who really drove the car either.
That is why it is more important to know the condition of the car itself.
Sure, it's great if it's a little old lady one owner car, but what if that owner was "The Little Old Lady (from Pasadena)" ?

    Re: FS: 1992 500E Pearl Black/Black, 223kmi, $26k (Oakland, CA)

I spent probably two hours with this a few weeks ago. Fundamentally it is a good, very well-maintained and documented car that works very well and looks quite good for the mileage. It is a two [doctor] owner car that has always been in the SF bay area and has a huge stack of records. First owner was an internist and second owner was a plastic surgeon who died recently and the car is being sold by his daughter who frankly has an inflated sense of the car's value and is one of the more irrational, confusing car sellers I have ever encountered. Fortunately, it is consigned with a dealer with which I have dealt in the past and they are trustworthy in my experience, so you don't have to deal directly with the seller.

The car remains on original CA plates and is generally complete, although you'll note the tool roll is incorrect. It has service records back to new and was clearly maintained with an open-checkbook policy that is essential when owning these cars. Lots of the typical big receipts: transmission, SLS shocks, accumulators etc. I was very pleased with how the car works in all regards, including the transmission, driveline, engine, and brakes. AC is cold, heat works, as do all the electrical accessories I tried. It doesn't run hot. I noticed evidence at the front/top of the motor of oil leakage, which looks like it's been going for a while. Sunshade works but doesn't sit flush when retracted and makes the unfortunate and jarring clicking noise when you hold the button down after it's finished going up. Wood is in good shape with some fading but no major cracks and the driver's seat upper bolster was competently retrimmed while the remaining leather appears original and looks good. The headliner shows typical issues but not catastrophic. I'd recommend a PPI as usual but everything I saw about this car made me confident that it's worth closer inspection and purchase if the inspection reveals it to be a sound car. For the mileage, it's an impressively crisp car, both cosmetically and in terms of how it drives.

    FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 223kmi, BaT (Oakland, CA)

Shows some battle scars - not bad for the miles. London Bridge headliner. "High performance sound system".....??

    VIN = WDBEA36E1NB726595

    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...-benz-500e-18/

    1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E

This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E is finished in Black Pearl Metallic over black leather and was acquired by its current owner from her father in 2015 after 19 years of ownership. Power is supplied by a 5.0-liter V8 mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, and the car is equipped with heated and powered front seats and an electric sunroof. Service in 2017 included a new throttle housing, engine and transmission mounts, injection air hoses, and more. This 3-owner 500E shows 223k miles and is offered on dealer consignment with service records from new, factory literature, a copy of its window sticker, a clean Carfax report, and a clear California title in the current owner’s name.

The car is finished in Black Pearl Metallic (199) with grey lower body cladding, and the Carfax report shows no history of accidents or damage. Factory equipment included an electric sunroof and headlight washers. The 500E featured a wider track and lower ride height than other W124 models. Stock 16″ 8-hole wheels are shod in 225/55 Continental ExtremeContact rubber mounted in 2016. The cabin is trimmed in black leather with wood trim on the door panels, dashboard, and center console. Factory equipment includes heated and powered front seats with memory as well as a leather-covered steering wheel and shift knob.

Additional features consist of automatic climate control and a high-performance sound system with an AM/FM/cassette radio. The 6-digit odometer shows 223k miles, approximately 3k of which were added by the current owner. The 5.0-liter V8 is paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Service in 2017 included a new throttle housing, injection air hoses and gaskets, filters, engine and transmission mounts, as well as cleaning the intake manifold. A copy of the window sticker shows an MSRP of just over $82k and lists original delivery at Mercedes-Benz Hollywood. Factory literature and a folder of service records dating to 1992 are included in the sale.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists three owners with California registration since new. The selling dealer states that the car will be sold with a 2018 California emissions certificate.

This is going to be interesting. Original ask $26k, now thrown to the wolves at BaT peanut gallery, where it will be decimated for the odometer and "deferred maintenance" despite records of some fairly spendy stuff recently taken care of. solutionsguy doesn't have much nice to say about the 036:
    https://bringatrailer.com/member/solutionsguy/

Rebuilt ETA $2k, check. Caps, rotors, all 3 engine/trans mounts $2k, check. Even has the last/best tires available in stock size (now NLA) almost $1k, check. ATF change & brake fluid flush, looks like a recent tag on that upper wiring harness too. But yeah, the headliner is sagging, and the odo is over 100k, so it's toast...

Indeed. Rolling parts car and/or track rat at that mileage.

With this mileage, we're talking $10-15K of deferred maint. At least.

The solutionsguy has some entertaining comments -- I can't say that I disagree with a lot of what he says. He knows his way around 6.3s, 600s, 116s, 107s, 126s, 124s and the like quite well.

He actually seems a bit unhinged, perhaps that's why I like his comments. I sense a goodly level of hinge-ship with the dude.

Three hours to go. Bidding @ $7000

    The lethargy is palpable.

The comment which compared the velocity potential of an 036 to a Mazda 3 was appropriately smacked down by mr gxsr.

Sold for $15,500 plus fees. That's a substantial drop from the $26k ask in September!

I think the buyer did well on this one, despite what Mr. Troll was ranting about in the BaT comments. Some people are just unhinged.

    SOLD: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 223kmi, BaT (Oakland, CA)

    Decently bought.

Now, $15K of maintenance ($8K DIY) ought to get this rig up and running as a proper E500E should.

The friend I went to look at this car with originally in early Sep ended up winning it on BaT! We made several offers in the mid to high teens back then and she countered at $22k so we walked away and then she consigned it. Patience paid off in this case!

After the consigning dealer takes his cut, the owner nets about 2/3rds of what she wanted. Ouchie.

and also less than our first offer of $16k, which we coyly indicated could maybe be brought as high as $19k but still she refused. I think that the $15-20 window is fair market value for it given how well preserved and documented it is. So it sold in the window what it is worth. Optimistic sellers almost always do end up there eventually...or they keep their cars. In the industry, we say, “the market is not ready for that seller to sell their car”

Awesome! Now see if you can get your friend to fire up an OWNER thread on the forum, and document what it takes to get it up to snuff. I'm curious how far off Mr. Troll's estimates were. Seemed to me like a good chunk of the big-ticket items were already done...

Mr. Troll has never yet been proven wrong in his estimations of what is required. You have to start looking at deferred maintenance through non-DIY lenses. Where average owners have to pay $125+ per hour labor and retail prices for parts. Where oil changes are $100, transmission service runs a couple hundred, etc.

I know it’s hard, as you are used to DIY. But you have to realize that DIY is not how most of the world lives. You’re the 1% here......

Yeah, I have it at a $17k car all day long. If you get it for $15.5k and don't have to put a Brinks truck into it, you won. At those miles, it's a happy driver at $20k, and with that service history, my guess is the Buyer will be driving it happily for less than $20k. Well bought IMO. Color combo is worth a couple grand, again IMO. So many of these "Pearl Black over Who Gives a Shit" cars out there, the black interior looks nice.

Good on you psportoveloce for helping the buyer sort through the noise.

    Cheers,

    maw

Re: SOLD: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 223kmi, BaT (Oakland, CA)

Hey everyone, new owner here. Looked at it today, quick spin and then picking it up tomorrow. I hemmed and hawed over this purchase for a number of personal reasons but was happy to get it, and this was I think the right price. The car presents very very well. Only non working item I can find is the rear seat headrest retractor, otherwise, literally everything is there (tool roll, mountains of service records that the seller/dealer didn't show, etc) and the paint and interior look amazing, far better than I'd expect for a 222k mile car and likely as good or better than my 120k mile '90 944 S2 (example: seats were recovered so look incredible, but this was not mentioned). Even the sagging headliner bothers my OCD-ness way less than I'd expect - again, looks far better than the photos. Any doubts I had vanished the second I saw it, and the drive only hammered this home further.

Car will be garaged in the Bay going forward as it ought to be. I won't have a ton of time to dive into it until the New Year, at which point I'll start a new owner thread. This is the fourth 124 in my family: My Dad had a W124 300E and my Mom an S124 300TE 4MATIC, a car my brother loved so much he bought another white/blue one out here ten years ago and held onto until recently. Excited to have this one coming through!

    Congrats, and welcome aboard!

BTW - the rear seat headrests will not retract unless (1) the engine is running, and (2) the rear window roller blind is FULLY retracted. Double check those 2 items and I bet the rear headrests will drop. If the roller blind is acting up (they all do), and you don't plan to use it, after getting it all the way down you can disconnect the switch.

Welcome aboard! You and Jlaa can compare levels of OCD-ness in person as he is in the Bay Area too.

Definitely meet up with jlaa. He’s a poster child for a lot of things pertaining to E500E ownership.
