The time has come after two years of ownership and restoration to hand my 1992 500E to its new caretaker. During my two years of ownership I've spent over $38,000 (excluding purchase price) refreshing the car and tending to deferred maintenance items that should have been done by prior owners. Significant items I've tended to (primarily by Texas German Autohaus in Houston, whose owner is a fellow 500E owner/enthusiast) include pulling the engine and replacing the timing chain, replacing the timing chain tensioner, replacing both distributor caps, replacing the valve cover gaskets, replacing the thermostat, replacing the rear main seal, rebuilding the transmission (at ~87,000 mi), replacing the blower motor and blower motor regulator, replacing front right ABS speed sensor, replacing both front lower control arm bushings, replaced catalytic converter (MagnaFlow), replacing the Basic Module, replacing the radiator and fan shrouds, replacing AC compressor and drier, and replacing the engine belt tensioner. In addition, I had the antenna deleted and replaced with an internal antenna installed in the rear deck. All of the previously listed work is well supported by receipts. The passenger side front seat leather has been repaired in the rear part on the main seat cushion (prior owner). Date code on the upper wiring harness is 2010.
New Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 225/55 R16 tires were installed in May 2017 at ~88,000 miles.
The remaining issues with the car are primarily cosmetic. Noted issues are: (i) the speedometer sticks between 78-85 mph, (ii) the rear shade only goes up about two-thirds of the way, (iii) nick in the driver window tinting from my replacing the window motor, (iv) the interior lights to the AC controls don't come on on the driver side, (v) burlwood between front seats is aging, (vi) numerous paint chips, (vii) paint hazing spots on hood, roof/sunroof, trunk, (viii) minor body dings (including one on the roof that was there when I purchased...no idea how it happened), (ix) a couple of paint cracks, (x) a rock ding in the front grill, (xi) two chips in the windshield (both have been filled), (xii) both front door card's vinyl is no longer adhering well at the edge of the the map pockets, (xiii) the heating lines to the windshield washer sprayer have been disconnected, and (xiv) staining in the floor mats. Other than the nick in the tint, all of these items existed at the time of my purchase (most of which were not disclosed in the Bring A Trailer ad by the seller).
With the exception of the paint work that was performed during the antenna delete, and the prior owner claims to have repainted the trunk lid, I don't believe the car has received any other paint work. The CarFAX does note an accident in 1999, but I have found no evidence of any repairs.
Other items I've tended to, but aren't as well documented are replacing both front window motors, replacing the driver-side rod which holds the lock pull, replacing a poorly installed after-market radio with a new Alpine unit (previous seller claimed to have original radio, but couldn't find it when I took delivery...), replacing the side mirror boots which were badly cracking, replaced both sun visors (old ones' plastic was severely cracking), replaced brake pads (Akebono EUR561 EURO Ultra-Premium Ceramic Brake Pad Set), replaced the center console, reverted to the original 16" wheels as the after-market 18" wheels the prior owner had put on the car were improperly offset for the car, and replacing the temperature readout in the gauge cluster. I documented a number of these items in my owner thread here: https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10262
You can find the Bring A Trailer listing from when I purchased the car here: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1992-mercedes-500e-3/
I've got a clean Texas Title in hand. Car comes with detailed records from my ownership and some records from the prior owner. I also have all owners manual, original window sticker and two keys.
My part of Houston did NOT flood and this car was not exposed to any Harvey flooding. PM me or send an email to jwfshop AT yahoo.com. Thanks!
