    1991 c126 560 rear sls question

Hi again....just in the middle of fitting HR springs and bilstein sport springs to my 91 sec with sls...on removing the drivers side rear "shock" I noticed it was almost empty of fluid...very little pressure etc. The passenger side sprayed fluid on cracking line open and continued to empty for some time.
Prior to this I noticed the drivers side rear about 1 1/4 " lower than the passenger side rear.
Faulty strut or accumulator or both ???
    Thx

    Normal on the fluid evacuation.

You bled off the Majority of the systems pressure when you cracked the first line.

That lean is bad...even by normal coupe standards...

    How many miles on her?

Any work done to the rear bushings/subframe?

Do you know how many miles on the accumulators? Mercedes Source has a video on how you can tell if your accumulators are bad but you will have to remove them. I just did the accumulator and SLS strut swap on my 560SEC.

Stick a screwdriver in each accumulator. See if it stops right quick or makes it to the back of the ball.

Bushings can look great. Doesn't mean they are.

Checked both accumulator s and both appear good...stick stopped short, did not go all the way to the back ....any idea why I had so much lean ???
    Thx

    Re: 1991 c126 560 rear sls question

All back together now..new springs fitted and 2 knub rear spring pass fitted...car actually sits perfect in the rear, exactly where I want it but I dont think the rear hydraulic shocks have filled back up yet ???....I followed instructions on re fitting etc and filled reservoir with new fluid, then ran engine fir a few minutes at 2 to 3k rpm...rear stayed the same ?....I actually want it to remain at its present height but feel the rear SLS is not operating now ?
When car is stationary and engine off the rear is very soft and easily bounced ??
    Thx

    Drive.

Bring some fluid with you JIC.

To my knowledge you can't bleed them while stationary....

    Re: 1991 c126 560 rear sls question

As suggested...took it for a bit of a run and the rear is now sat an inch higher, so the sls has now " recharged " . My problem is the car now sits about an inch too high for my liking !...can I try adjusting the sls to bring it back down ???
    Thx

    Re: 1991 c126 560 rear sls question

To check your rear height, disconnect the link between the SLS valve and the sway bar. With the engine running on high idle (you can disconnect the ICV valve to raise the idle), raise the SLS valve lever from horizontal to about 45 degrees. This will cause the system to fill the struts and raise the rear. Once it stops raising, then move the lever all the way to about 45 degrees down past horizontal. This is the emptying position. The car will drop. Once it stops dropping, this is your ride height. Don't be surprised that the lever is a little hard to move when the system is pressurized.

Ride height is a combination of springs/pads and 'basic' pressure in the SLS system. If, after doing the above, you're happy with the height, move the SLS lever back to horizontal. You can insert a 4mm (I think) rod into the hole nearest the pivot and into the valve to lock the lever in the horizontal position. Then adjust the link so that it can be reinstalled without moving the lever.

If the car is too low after the raise/lower test, you can raise it using the SLS valve. This is not correct but works. My car has been this way for 10 years with no ill effects. The correct way would be with thicker spring pads or longer springs.

If the car is too high after the above test, you can only adjust with shorter springs or pads.

You're welcome. Be sure to remove that 4mm pin before driving!
