Question Front shocks or ball joints? 500 SEC noise

This 1985 500 SEC with stock suspension (as far as I know) was driven 500 miles a year for 10 years. I acquired it and now it's going to get 500 miles a month and that means lots of stuff will happen. Such is life.

My ride has suddenly become a bit bouncy. That kind of slow wavy bounce when your shocks are weakened. And I have a noise in the front, which you can hear in the linked video. The noise started last week, but is now more pronounced. When driving you really only hear it at low speed.

Shocks in need of replacement is thought #1. But what about ball joints?

I am a completely and total amateur. A newbie of all newbies so all comments welcome.

Have you checked with the folks over at the Benzworld W126 sub-forum?

There are a number of noted world expert mechanics there who are very familiar with these cars who can probably get your questions answered & problems solved. We maintain a very small 126 forum here on this site, but the real focus is the E500/500E. The real, roll-your-sleeves-up-and-git-r-done 126 guys all hang out over there. A few of them slum it over on this forum.

I have found that place to be very clicky. less and less friendly.

Better are the facebook pages, where I have had lots of replies. But I thought I'd just ask here since additional opinions are always welcome.

No doubt in my mind I need new front shocks. I am just curious if there is anything else I should check out.

ball joints are most def shot out...but I suspect your shocks are as well. Given the age don't discount the need for upper control arms and all the Rest of it. Unless recent work has been done to the front end better to go in and tend to it ALL. Wear and tear from use & just existence make it prudent. Plus, the car will feel So much better with everything fresh.

Yup I second the upper control arms as well. Plus sway bar bushings can also cause that "groan" when shot.

What's weird is that the PPI didn't detect any of this. He said the shocks were so-so but that the rest looked okay. Of course, he missed some things that went wrong within days of my getting the car. Major bummer on me, I guess.

If all of the above (what you kind gents mentioned) is in need of dealing with, I can see a massive bill coming my way. My Christmas may be all about my car's front end.

Front shocks or ball joints? 500 SEC noise

Common to have storage cars blow the 15 year old suspension bits (if not original) after a return to daily service.

$2500 ought to get you fixed from shocks to all steering, dogbones, guiderods and ball joints/uca/lca

That's what I was thinking. The car was barely driven and when it was, gently. Real gently.
