fuel leak at weld joint btwn filler tube & tank

    Hey guys,

ongoing repairs on this car, never ending.

Last couple of times I filled the tank I smelled strong gas inside the car and also while standing outside near the gas cap area.

I pulled back the carpet in the trunk and there is a small weep/seepage of fuel I think where the weld joint it between the filler tube and the tank itself.

Also the fuel/gas cap rubber seal has a couple of cracks on it. Already ordered a new cap and I am likely going to use Permatex 84334 Fuel Tank Repair Gas Expoxy Stick over the leaking weld joint.

Apart from changing the tank because its expensive, does any one have any practical suggestions please?

Make sure the leak is actually at the tank. Simple test, wrap some paper towels around the tube elbow and see if you get liquid at the tank, while the paper towel remains dry and clean. A leaking cap gasket is more likely, but you never know. I've never heard of a leak at the filler tube weld area.

On the bright side, 70L tanks are cheap and easy to source used... worst case you'd swap it out. Not a fun job of course, tough part is R&R'ing the large feed hose that exits the strainer.

im using this for the weld crack. I also found some small cracks on my gas cap seal, so I will get a new seal there. Gas cap was wet with gasoline after driving with 3/4 tank full
