SayHey, will this setup work on both automatic climate control cars, and manual climate control? I wasn't sure if any of the plumbing was different under the hood. All our USA-spec cars are automatic climate control.

I don't really know, all connection is done near firewall and brake booster. What is happening in the heater is mystery for me))

Got it. I wonder if the hoses are the same on both systems. Do you know if the donor car from Japan had automatic or manual climate control?

    Manual.
as for the hoses we need to check epc for diagrams and differences)
This is a rare option and there is very little info about it(

I don’t like being the one to ask but what the hell is a webasto? What is it’s purpose? Is it aftermarket?

    Its an OEM option -
Stand alone heater that works on gas and heats coolant liquid. Very popular in cold climates. You can set start of heating and get in a hot car in a freezy morning)

It's made by the same company (Webasto) who makes the E500E (and many other MB models) sunroof assemblies. As SayHey says, it's a gas-powered "pre-heater" that fits underhood, that runs on a separate timed system independent of the engine, and is used to "pre-heat" the car's coolant and HVAC system for cold mornings. It was often a factory- or dealer-installed option in non-US countries. I don't believe that MBNA/MBUSA ever offered it for cars sold here.

My 1995 G-wagen (which is a German import) has a factory-installed Webasto system. It has a digital control LCD system in the center console that is identical to those I've seen in Yurropean W124 models.

Re: Webasto set from a 500E

In cold climates, the Webasto would be da bomb. Set a timer and climb into a toasty warm car even if it's zero degrees and the car has been parked at your job all day (or, overnight at your residence).

No idea why MB never offered this on USA vehicles (not even in Canada, eh, where you'd think it would have been popular).

The idea of burning gasoline for a heater under my hood always seemed scary. I can remember a buddy who had a Karmann Ghia with a Webasto gas heater. The thing scared the heck out of me...

Their web site for automotive heaters:

I figure if it was a factory option, Mercedes did it right, and the risk is probably minimal. I haven't heard any horror stories about MB's burning down because of Webasto failures. But, I may think twice before using it with the vehicle parked inside any structure...

I'll just say that I have not bothered to use mine on my G-wagen. And I wouldn't use it unless it had a thorough going-through.

    Thanks,

I don't think I need it in SoCal. If I move to Alaska I will contact you.

Re: Webasto set from a 500E

Auxiliary heaters are pretty common on cars here in northern Yurop, especially on oil burners with running temps as low as 75°C. On chilly winter days at minus 12-15°C it takes quite some time to get comfy compartment temps, so the aux.heater has to run after start up until it automatically shuts down. Gas engines has higher running temps and heats up the compartment faster so aux.heater is not that needed. However, aux.heaters are heating the coolant, and for any engine it is beneficial with preheating on cold start up. A side note is that modern HVAC systems with aux.heaters is battery eaters, don't expect more than 5 years on the battery.

BTW, the fire risk with aux.heaters is statistically low - supposed they're properly maintained per specs.

Just as Arnt calls the Webasto the “HOT OPTION” up in Northern Yuro. That solar panel sounds like a “COOL OPTION” for us in the warm climates. I would bet my rich neighbors in Newport Beach have that in thier cars. Ha!

Both of these options have thier applications and can be appreciated where they are needed.

    Thanks for enlightening me.

    Take Care

Without a doubt or they wouldn't be in use for so many years. I just have a mental thing about making a fire with gasoline in the engine compartment.

I've worked above the Arctic Circle where cabin and engine heaters, typically on diesel fueled equipment, are a necessity for year-round operation. For that matter, most of the year operation. Brrr.

Isn't the Webasto main unit located in the rear of the car? I've never seen a photo of one installed, so I'm curious... doesn't seem to be any space for it up front.

    Webasto set from a 500E

My G-wagen Webasto (factory fitment) is located on the inner engine compartment, on the driver's side.
