    WTB: Brake booster from 124.034 / 036

Upgraded the calipers and master cyl on my w124 wagon, but now the pedal is too hard, so I need the dual diaphragm booster from a v8 car. Anybody have one sitting around they wouldnt mind selling? It was common to the v8 400 and e420. Thanks.

FYI, read this first before swapping the booster. I did that 10 years ago and ended up changing the components a couple of times before I got it feeling "correct" to my foot:

Dave, I have the booster/mastercylinder/reservoir altogether, just unbolted from the car.
I would have thought it best to install this as a complete unit.
    What do you think?

Steve, there's no issue separating the components if needed, for shipping or whatever. They are not "matched" items, so it should also be ok to mix+match if needed. Installation is the fun part, lots of fluid needs to get pushed through the system to fully bleed!

Its OK I am an expert at brake bleeding now. Witth the whole works up on blocks and the wheels off it takes me about 15 minutes to do all 4. Would prefer to not have become such an expert...

Thanks I have seen it. I have the 300mm 500e brembos in front and the 600sl calipers in back. With a new 500e master, it is definitely front biased. My pedal is so hard with the stock booster I am frankly thinking the 500e amplifier with 5x should be about right! Will have to review what calipers you were running with the limo booster.

I had 300x28mm fronts, with the 278x24 rears, for all configurations... I only swapped around MC's and boosters.

Your setup is different with 300mm front and also 300x22mm rears; note this was never a factory setup on any chassis.

Don't forget that pad compound will affect pedal feel too.

    Ok thanks.

    R4s pads on order.

The early r129 boosters are interchangeable. I will probably go with one of those.

Incidentally gsxr I think the brake booster part numbers on the spreadsheet are incorrect. The 003 430 65 30 doesnt seem to be a 500e booster. The one in your photos on mbworld is a 003 430 87 30, as is the one mentioned for sale above.

Thanks Steve for your offer. That is a great OE part, but a bit too nice for what I need.

So the follow up for posterity is that the dual diaphragm r129 boosters work great for early 500e master and calipers.

Pedal is light as gsxr suggests, but not overly so. Front still slide before the rears, even with the 300mm sl600 rear calipers. This is however a wagon and This is with stoptech slotted cryo rotors all around. Stop tech pads in rear, stock 500e pads in front. I received the r4 pads but thought I would burn these pads up first.

The car stops more aggressively with quite a bit less pedal effort than it did with late model Wagon calipers and stock 87td master and booster. And I was using pretty much all my strength with the 500e master and calipers with stock 87td booster. I would say it is now about the same as a 2018 x5d with the M package, because we had one of those for a bit.

The 500e master has a different brake line attachment. And the booster is thicker, so it barely fits the non v8 and you have to put the booster and master in as a unit if it is a non v8 car. Then bend the brake lines creatively to suit.

I broke my brake light switch, so got a new one. Broke the stock vacuum line at the plastic fitting, so got a new one. So be mindful.

I will post again if I tire of the setup, as gsxr did with his eventually. So far am thrilled. It is a totally different car.
