    Hi,

I'm looking for a set of high beam reflectors to do a conversion to European headlights

    Re: High Beam Reflectors

I think the high beam reflectors are basically the same, except the 036 reflector has no shield over the bulb. Can't you just remove the shield? Bigger problem is sourcing the lenses...

    Re: High Beam Reflectors

Thanks Dave- seems like you and Jeff are of the same opinion here. I read up in some German forums on this and there was a consensus that the reflectors are different, but that might turn out to be wrong after all. I followed Jeff's advise and removed the lenses on a regular headlight and on a used E500 headlight that I just bought and it seems that the reflectors are identical in their shape (haven't measured any radii though)......
Since these damn headlight parts are so difficult to come by, I guess I will just have to try to use new regular headlight units and swap the lenses out (luckily was able to buy a pair of 500E lenses in good condition in Germany), even if that ends up giving me a less effective high beam. I just really dislike the look of the U.S. headlights too much to not do it.

Thanks! I checked with Husker and they told me the 500E reflectors are NLA - if indeed there is such a thing as a 500E specific reflector (seems like the jury is still out on that one)

    Re: High Beam Reflectors

I think the reflectors are different part numbers in the EPC, due to the shroud... but functionally, they should be the same if you remove the shroud. Now, RHD vs LHD is a different story; I think the reflector shape may actually be different. (?)

Since you have E500 headlights, and 500E Euro lenses, remove the shroud over the H3 bulb & install the lenses... the result should be equivalent to 500E Euro lights!

Oh, and yes, there is an 036-specific high beam reflector. Brigadier is correct, p/n is 124-826-00-78, only for Europe/Japan. Same for LHD+RHD, only the main (H4) beam has different reflectors for wrong-hand-drive.

EPC indicates those are main-beam reflectors for LHD / wrong-hand-drive traffic, for Hella lights in most pre-facelift 124's.

    Re: High Beam Reflectors

Not sure if this is relevant. When I bought my 500E, it had headlamps appropriate for LHD traffic, i.e. as in mainland Europe.

As I was UK based, I had to change to headlights for RHD. I naively thought that if I just changed the lens to RHD, then all would be sorted. However, we found it impossible to focus the lights correctly to pass our MOT (car fitness test) - until I obtained some RHD reflectors, after which there was no problem.

I didn't study the reflectors to see how they differed, but there must have been some subtle differences. I was just happy to get the problem sorted!

    Re: High Beam Reflectors

In a comparison of standard US w124 facelift headlights to US early (pre-facelift) 036 headlights the fog reflectors on the standard lights are a bit larger with the covered bulb located a bit higher in the reflector. I am using the solution GSXR mentioned, removing the bulb shield and using standard 124 euro lenses hoarding my 036 euro lenses until more become available. With the amount of traffic in Atlanta where the car gets driven the high beams usefulness is limited.
