FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, ???kmi, junked (Newark, CA)

    VIN = WDBEA36E0PB923468

    Data card link: https://www.datamb.com/vin/rogOm27nQ0PE8DNRl

    This makes me sad.

Went to see the car in person, as there were no photos posted. Looks like it was picked over pretty thoroughly before it arrived at Pick-N-Pull. No obvious body damage except for the passenger door. I wonder what killed this beast.

Gerry, does the VIN come up in your database?

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Pearl Black/Gray, ???kmi, junked (Newark, CA)

    I has a sad.

There's still a few items of value in the photos, and might be something left in the CAN box (doubtful, but worth a look). Funny to see it has small 6-cyl front brakes, and wagon rear door armrests with speakers...?

EDIT: Is it my imagination, or did someone surgically remove the firewall in the engine compartment? Weird.

Janos, was there any rust in the floor pan at all? Spare tire, battery area, etc.?

I didn't unpack the trunk; there was a lot of junk in there and everything was moist and gross from the torrential rains we've had these last couple of days. But there were no signs of rust anywhere that I could see.

It kind of looks like the rear bumper inserts (sometimes refered to as mud flaps) are still in place. Might want to grab them if they are.

The springs may be worth taking. Nice to have a set to work with. That left side rear wheel cladding piece with garnish is worth a trip alone.

I am really interested in the battery trunk bottom if it's not too bad. I dont need the entire battery trunk panel, just the bottom + 5 cm up and around. The right side air duct for the motor mount cooling is still hanging there, I need that one as well.

Both rocker panels are still there too.

I don't have a prior record of this car in my detailed private database, unfortunately. I do have a record from 2007 of the immediate prior car, 923467, but not this car.

    Cheers,

There is a market for these rear bumper inserts. I do recall that someone on the 500eboard forums had mentioned they could print them, but haven't seen a followup on that for a while now.

If this car still has them, it would be great to see someone take them to create molds or digitize them for re-manufacture - printing.

I need two pair myself and I'd kick in with anyone to help the cause to start a batch build-purchase.

I even wondered if someone could be creative with building spray foam insulation in a home made mold of some sort.

Anyway, I'm not the first to mention them here, but if available, I'm #2 in line...

Definitely want the Sport Line wheel if you can get it.

    Tnx...O

    Thanks....

    hello Gents,

saw the car today, the front engine cradle rails are bent to the right from a collision. both front strut towers are re welded from another car.
lots of bends and dents on the frontal area.

Rocker claddings gone / rear fenders already cutout / sportline wheel gone in my presence ( guy who removed wrestled with the 10mm allen)

rear battery tray plate was missing. probably gone.

    whats left..

rear shocks , trans mounting plate still inside.
    rear diff.

I removed the rear shade mechanism.

    bunty,

You mentioned the battery tray was missing BUT what about the bottom of the battery compartment a NLA part. Did you happen to notice it’s condition? Long time member, Arnt aka 500AMM in Norway has been looking this part for a long time. See post #11 above. A PITA for sure. It would have to be cut out with a ‘SawsAll’.

I don't know anyone off hand who had purchased a set of these Oscar, but I do know Yuri very well from my Star dealings with him and I can vouch for his honesty in describing items and his integrity to do business with.

I am quite sure that should a problem arise Yuri would sort it out!

That bottom in the battery trunk is a tricky part to replicate and repair because it has a thicker doubling/reinforcement plate shaped & stitch welded inside the outer panel. Next is the battery tray bolted upon this doubling plate. The moisture creeps in between the doubling plate and outer panel over time and create perfect conditions for corrosion. Unless the car lives in a dry and warm climate, that moist never dry up. It's impossible to monitor this, and when the rust appears it's too late. The outer panel goes first and next is that doubling plate gradually eaten up.

It's very likely that the outer panel has rust holes on this car already, or at least surface corrosion, but if it's not too bad it can be rescued. As mentioned I only need the bottom section + approx 30-50 mm up and around. I'll make a cutting sketch anyway. I'll PM you shortly.

Sounds interesting. If it’s not spoken for already I would like to be the first one on it, depends on the rust though.

    Here are some pictures,

The base is nasty please refer pictures. Pried open as much rubber coating i could, to expose rust.
Cleaned the battery tray plate ( detachable part) and sprayed some rust primer to seal the metal temporarily.

No pressure for anyone to buy it.. Having no job at the moment makes junkyard trips my fav pastime..

    Thanks for the pics!
The corrosion was more or less as expected, but it can be repaired by cutting back to clean material and fit a pre-shaped plate. But the best is to separate the reinforcement plate entirely from the trunk panel, because it is surface corrosion all the way between those plates which has to be treated to stop developing further, or at least delayed.

I have been pondering about using a battery trunk plate from an E420 to start with, but I don’t know how they look like. They may be as the regular W124 because the battery sits higher on them. Does someone with an E420 here have a photo of the underside of their battery trunk? Just as the first image bunty660 loaded up on his photo link.

1995 E420 photo attached. It looks slightly different.

    Many thanks Dave!

The E420 battery trunk appears to be as the regular W124 which is missing the special pressed shape as the 036 has. The challenge on a repair is that both the reinforcement plate and the trunk panel has this special shape. I have reconsidered the repair and will likely replace the trunk bottom with a straight plate. This way can both plates get proper treatment before they are put together, and it will be a tiny gap most places giving better ventilation to keep it dry. That solution should in fact be better than the original with regard to corrosion IMO.
