Can you verify the authenticity of a 1994 SL500 6.0 AMG thru its VIN tag alone?

Yes, but only if it was a factory "code 957" SL60 AMG. A car could be a legitimate AMG 6.0L if it was modified after delivery by MB, this will not show in the EPC datacard though. The latter is more difficult to prove but there should be AMG decals on the engine and upper radiator support, along with an AMG engine number stamped into the block.

Yes, if it was ordered from the factory as such, it will have a special code on the build card as such (I think for the .036 it's code #822, correct?).

If it was converted later ("after the fact") at the request of the owner, then no....or at least, not as easily.

    Cheers,

All AMG 6.0L models for R129 and W124 (possibly W202 and W140 as well), through at least 1995, will all have option code 957 in the datacard - this indicates "AMG-Technic Package". Code 958 indicates a "Limited" for the W124.036 chassis. I am not sure what code 822 means, it doesn't appear in this handy list.

Additional trivia: On the W124, code 952/953 indicates a Sportline model, on a W202 code 956 indicates Sport model.

Thanks for the clarification on the AMG code number for the .036, I didn't know what it was so as why I made the "I think ... correct?" qualifier.

    Re: 1994 sl500 6.0 amg

I'd ask for any documentation from AMG (Japan or Germany) showing it had a 6.0L conversion, although they may not have that paperwork. The other thing would be to ask for high-quality (not cell phone!) photos of the AMG decals under the hood, and if possible, the engine number stamped into the block.

Yes without engine number or any documents proving the AMG conversion, NO BUY. As simple as that.
They want to sell a rare high performance car for lots of money, then they should prove that its legitimate.

    Re: 1994 sl500 6.0 amg

Plenty of AMG "wanna be" cars have been sold for big money. Just because it has no AMG options encoded into the VIN does not mean it should be considered a "no go". Decals under the hood are a good sign but those decals can be purchased and installed (seen this done before). I think Dave is right and the AMG engine stamp would need to be verified to see if its a 6.0l.

    Re: 1994 sl500 6.0 amg

I concur with Rik. Muddying the water is the fact that early M119's (through roughly mid-1992 model year) have the engine number stamped behind the left (driver's side) cylinder head, at the back of the block, near the firewall - making it nearly impossible to photograph in the car, and not easy to read. I do not know if AMG was nice and stamped their "6.0" up front on these early engines or not.

Here is a close-up photo of an early 1992 500E (5.0L) engine number location - the second photo gives you some perspective as to where this is:

Thanks to 2Phast for the decode and to all who provided vital informations. I will have to pass up on the SL500 6.0 AMG car since the dealer would not oblige checking the AMG tag on the engine.

Anyway, I am now checking out a 1995 AMG SL600 with vin WDB1290761F121543. Pictures are also attached. My question is if its an authentic AMG, how would I know if the tuning firm modified the engine considering that its still a 6.0 liter?

    Re: 1994 sl500 6.0 amg

I'd expect an SL600 to be converted to an SL720 or SL740... I think these were pretty rare from AMG though, and I'm not sure if any were sold by the factory (i.e., they may all be post-sale conversions). Maybe Rik knows more about 'em. If it's just an SL600 with AMG wheels and a body kit, it's nice, but nothing super special or rare.
