    Congratulations Louis,

That's nice. It should keep her happy for a long time and off of your back.

What is it actually? I haven't been paying much attention to the new cars for a while.
I know it's a Benz. Is it a brand new E350 or E550 or what?

I know what you me about the wife wanting something in this century and not a hobby car.

My Wife ONLY want's a 2005 Cadillac DeVille. She want's big metal protection. She is on her second 2005 DeVille. The one she has at the moment has 64K on the clock. When the mileage on this one runs up around a 100K I guess I'll be looking for another one. There getting hard to find with low mileage.

it the E350 RWD with AMG sports package. Seats are full orthopedic and envelope you with seat, side and side/lumbar back support as you might expect. Wife likes the tight compact feel going from a 7 passenger SUV (read truck) to this 4 seat (ahem 2 adults up front) sporty cabriolet. (and for the record, when we first met she drove a white ragtop so now that we are empty nest - well 25 year anniversary etc she got it back)

Since we have added to the fleet, one had to be outdoors. For the maple tree effect, I sourced a nice outdoor custom cover that feels like a synthetic blend of silk. It needs a bath but the C126 wears it well. Does it make my backside look fat?

Had to repost the pic after I soaked the cover in hot soapy bleach water overnight to kill the mildew.

She'll be happy as long as you continue to give her the love she expects and not show favoritism to the younger, faster, newer, lighter, and more nimble new girl that displaced her from her home.

It was HER home until that ugly green girl took her place.

Just drive her every once and a while and she'll be fine.

It is the price she has to pay when she is an aging member of King Louis' harem.

Tell her she looks good in her new dress and it does NOT make her look fat.

Thought I'd tackle the idler arm bushing. Thought it would be a few hours, wrong!! Had to cut off nut and bolt with Dremel as cutting wheel too large. Guess that nut was welded on there, rubber was pretty much non existent. Any tips getting it back together? More on that when I get to it later....

    Re: OWNER - nocfn

Well Idler Arm Bushing complete. Test drive, CHECK! So now everything in the steering and suspension has been refreshed with OEM parts. As for the Idler bushing, after being talked off the ledge by a few folks (GSXR, Samiam44 and Glen) we accomplished the task. When I did the other components, I was on ramps but soon found with the tires off the ground that my unloaded Idler Arm bushing was as loose as (insert filthy imagination) you might expect. Clunk is gone when braking. So brief recap: all MB steering components, akebono pads, fluid flush, removed, inspected and repacked bearings and pinch nuts to spec. Next up, new front struts in the spring, MB Tech who did alignment said they are getting soft and I agree. Steering is quite nice, like you would expect.

    Re: OWNER - nocfn

Delivery expected on my next project and that would be a set of hubs to refurbish from our hero, Captruff from the E500E parts car. I will be cleaning them up and installing a new set of these, alongside the approved MB green grease. This will be a bench project to install once I swallow the price of MB struts

Thread update: yesterday I cleaned and replaced the races on the hubs and prepped the inner bearings with MB green paste. Sadly, I relied upon amazon to pair the grease seal pictured, and they are (were) too large. Ordered MB PN seals to finish the hub refurb project. In my package were 20 tumbled lug bolts which I swapped out. Some of my bolt heads from PO were shorter than others, but all shank length were proper. Now, it is uniform and proper.

    Re: OWNER - nocfn

Today I did a basic MX item I had been neglecting on the C126. Rivet 126-990-00-92 2 required for $7.40 from MB.

Purpose and source of some leaks are these rusted rivets on the roof, at the A pillar reveal molding. Pealing back the rubber to expose the 4 screws, the crud has kept this tight so be gentle removing the seals and the molding. I didn't take pics as it is in the FSM but soaking the rubber in hot soapy water and treating with Aerospace 303 brought them to life. There is some adhesive backing foam so I didn't rub too hard. Mine were in good shape, no torn stays or rips. The replacement seals are pricey for what they are, so take care to clean and nourish the rubber and clean the area.

The FSM says open the hood and remove the lower fender bolt where the molding attaches. The DS had a MB embossed push grommet for trim, and the PS didn't have anything so I did the same with a trim push grommet. For $7.40, this can eliminate a source of A pillar leaks. I also used a bit of MB window sealant, but just a trace. I had some left from the back glass replacement last year.

Nocfn - Well done! I just read through all 7 pages of this thread ---- you've done all this in 2 years ---- wow! You set a super high bar!
PS --- I just received a set of front struts as well --- both Renee @ Naperville and Darvin @ Gainesville are so great to work with.

Had some time today to putz with the C126. Replaced Febi contraband tensioner with gen-u-whine MB tensioner. Say no to chain slap. 1160501811

Also removed the door panel, and the mechanism for the glass. Seems the rusty channel holding the glass was kaput. I removed that and removed the rust, treated with miracle paint. Seated the rubber back in the treated / cured U channel, with RTV Silicone adhesive, layed a bead for the glass in the support. Cleaned regulator and greased, along with the rails, Replaced the rubber 90 degree run channel near the mirror as well as it was showing its 25 years of useful life. Nice to have all new rubber now. 171,287

pulled a spark plug and changed them all to the GVZ MB plugs he brought back from Fatherland. Seems the dreaded R as in resistor was in there for the last 3 or so years by the Indy. Now I have to dial in the idle and duty cycle, as the ECU is responding to a very different set of circumstances. 171,301 Here is a picture and note that all of them were caked with anti-seize and were of the same color.

Curiously, every search outside of MB for plugs gives you Bosch resistor or champion / NGK Resistor plugs. NGK BP7ES are cooler plugs and match OEM specs. Direct are BP5ES but run hotter.

Yes - all the aftermarket catalogs assume resistor plugs are "better" and default to showing the resistor equivalents. Even better, many catalogs shows exotic-element fine-wire electrodes (platinum, iridium, yttrium) as an "upgrade", at substantial cost. Very, very annoying. Especially since the fine-wire stuff makes most older MB engines run awful awfully.

Took the family out to Ruth's Chris for Christmas Dinner about 35 miles away. Opened her up to about 100 before wife noticed. Valet crowd pounced on the spruce asking major questions and 2 of them knew the provenance of the machine. I said they could drive.....

New struts and steering linkage really present well.

Remove the valve cover & check cam lobes. Then refer to M117 Top-End Rebuild HOW-TO.

Mine was at 183K. I've got a full 60K on the rebuild since 2010 when I did it. I started on Feb 28 -- best time of the year for working outside in the shop. Deadline for heat and humidity: May 1. Just made it.

    Merry Christmas !!

My suspicions exactly. Got the valve spring compressor the other day and will check. I am going to replace to affected rockers and ball studs ( had a sticking or failure to hold pressure) and I suspect it's toast. I have a set of cams if needed off M117 heads. I can recite the picture order of your post under water boarding .....

If you put new or used cams on, you need to buy new cam followers for that side of the motor. Dunno if Febi are good but the factory ones are $$$. . Doubtful but possible that a ball stud is bad. Per factory procedure you can check those with a wooden hammer handle.

Lobe inspection is it, likely lubrication issue. You don't need spring compressor to inspect lobes, only to remove followers.

Top End HOW-TO is your Bible. Good luck. Use plenty of good shop lighting.

I think McClare did an engine rebuild thread on the 126 forum at Benzworld. Probably another good source of G2 for your conundrum.

Plan was to fsm the lifters. When I did oilers and tubes, I had a quick sticking lifter/rocker but no lobe wear and that's been about 5k. Put in new MB tensioner and coincidentally I have the issues but not a result of the new tensioner. 171k means we are getting closer to a Bobby Scroggins machine shop.

So an update to the C126. Removed all 32 rockers and cams from my donor heads. Turns out the donor had new cams, rockers and hydraulic compensators. One of them was loose and destroyed cam lobe for RS and the associated rocker. So I used 30 of the donor rockers to replace mine. Also noticed I had 4 compensators loose on my heads so I torqued all of them to spec. Replaced rubber fuel lines, gave EHA 1/8 turn CW, and re-gapped my plugs to .042, they were pretty narrow, not even close to .03

Seems that improved the note of the engine, improved the idle and it performed quite well. No fuel or oil leaks. Will check again after a few cycles. Ordered new wires so that will be a good time to check the system for
    Leaks again.

When the valve covers come off it's incremental labor to check the timing chain, to see if there's any stretch therein. Particularly if a chain is known to have 100K or more miles on it.

Removed the smog pump and bracket from the C126. I removed the belt and unplugged it a year ago since it's age requires safety inspection only. Nice to lose that unnecessary 8-10 pounds.

Went to a local MBCA chapter event at the Gullo Classic Car museum in far North West Houston. Here a few MB cars that were there and some fun snaps. About 53k sq feet of cars.

Also, had a friend with me who is a G owner. We were cruising in the E500 and from 75 - 120 was quite impressive. She kicked down and firmly but with the subtle throw back in the seats, effortlessly hit the 120. There was more to be had but the point was made. Fun stuff for sure.

Replaced the mechanical fuel injectors on the M117 in the C126 today. The result was positive, as others have posted with smooth idle, fast start and better response at accelerator. All mb parts, new Bosch injectors. Replaced associated rubber last year so no change. 171,411

I forgot to add that one small hex bolt that holds the injector hold down clip stripped. After every step f EZ out I owned, including pounding torx bits, etc I drilled the head off and it released. Luckily I retained buckets of fasteners from the C126 I stripped several years back and had 8 perfect factory replacements on the shelf. This added at least an hour and a half to a very simple 90 minute job.

A long over due resolution. Having a bit of a whine under the hood of the C126 at temp/idle. Even some spirited acceleration have me the same but louder. If you guessed it, take $10 out of petty cash! Replaced my 3 year old belts. Alternator and ac were saved for spares but the double system PS/Water Pump belts were cracked and slick beyond belief. I removed my air pump so that belt wasn't replaced. 171,900

Did a little work on the E500 today, no pics per se, but will come when finished. Installed a new probe for the temperature, but didn't test it just yet. Since I had to remove the headlight to route the probe wire, I replaced the unit with my NIB euro assembly. For giggles I hooked up the city light to the wiper circuit to come on with the side markers. Will complete the other side and take a pic. As you know, the chicks dig it.

    Finished - added pics

I changed out the two vacuum check valves, and all associated rubber connections. I had a new pierburg valve but the existing one works works as advertised. The rubber connections were not cracked, but they were not tight connections, like you would expect for 23 years so they got refreshed too.

So over the past few days I had a gumption to inspect caps/rotors and insulators. What I found was my rotor bolts Bosch 3.21999 mm were stripped out but two. Made me happy as someone changed out caps and rotors at some point. Only focusing on the passenger side, I removed the bolts with a T20, tapped in. I cleaned off the rotor, to say that I exposed the brass, along with the points of contact on the cap. Both were replaced after 2006 at least that was the date code.

After some trial and error, I resolved the issue of the fully threaded 4mm SS rotor bolts by drilling out the threads on the rotor itself. Once the bolt moved freely within the rotor, I knew I was good. I used the blue Loctite on the cam bolt, replacing the insulator from 1994 with a new Bosch, along with blue Loctite on the rotor bolts. The insulator had residue on the back and on the inside, but nothing like some of the awful gelatin like insulators that have been posted.

I did not have any cam seal failures, or excessive moisture build-up, or corrosion. There was some, but using isopropyl after scraping all the brass contacts made fast work of it. I will move on to the driver side here in a day or so, and expect to find the same issues. I will do the same process for that side as well. Goal is to only replace the insulators. All other components are satisfactory after some light clean up, but will monitor and replace as needed.

The slightly longer rotor bolt at 4mm head is not an issue, but engaging threads in both the rotor and the bracket are a problem. I thought a small mammal crawled into my pistons under those conditions. So if you replace the bolts with larger hex head or the fastener of your choice, either have a smooth shank or drill the 3 threads out in the rotor and you are all set.

EDIT. finished up DS, performing the same revisions with the insulator, bracket and rotor bolts. This side had a bit more bubbly goop on the back of the insulator. Start up was smooth and swift.

Finished up the blower regulator replacement with the FCP lifetime warranty on a KAE unit. Made in Germany but some subtle differences, the resistor is glued to the aluminum heat-sink, and the existing screws from OEM with T20 worked except for the top one. I used a phillips head screw that was slightly larger diameter. Also, the leads are slightly shorter on the KAE, so attaching the wires required the use of needle-nose pliers to get the electrical connection. Lubed up the wiper assembly, but it was still good from when I replaced the blower fan 6 or so months ago. used compressed air to clean and suction the bowels, including the evaporator. Installed new cabin filters and slathered the plastic airbox assembly with aerospace 303, along with the rubber weather-stripping and basically the entire engine bay and mirror boots. Did the interior as well as the compressed air made for some high-velocity fun from the full power fan inside the cabin... (note to self wear eye protection in the future).

    Re: OWNER - nocfn

Did a few simple tasks. One on the C126 - replacing the four pin idle temp sensor, preparing to rebuild that part of the wire harness next week. On the E500 I swapped out the LCD temp display in the cluster. I changed out the probe last month with no joy. I replaced the LCD only to get clubs-hearts-spades a few weeks later. So spare number 3 installed and seems to be holding accurately so far.

UPDATE - C126 completed the rewiring of the Idle Temp harness with a donor from Bondavi. The M119 plugs are straight on, and readily available however the same plug at 90 degree or pancake style is NLA for the M117. Spliced, reinforced and double layer heat shrink out to keep her going for a long time. 12May17

    OWNER - nocfn

C126 Starter motor didn't turn off when I pulled the key. Removed. What I've done is remove cable, gave the solenoid a rap with the BFH. Started car and got the car on ramps, removed the offending unit. New reman Bosch delivery via Amazon Tuesday afternoon.

    Job completed. 172,785

While replacing the starter last week I noticed the PS Guide Rod Bushing had deteriorated boot. And while the tell tale sign of joint failure is low-speed clunk while braking, I am still in good shape. Replacing it before complete failure will save the tire and stress on other components. The Dog Bone bushings were replaced on either side when I rebuilt the suspension 6 years ago. The DS is in perfect condition so that will remain.

    Re: OWNER - nocfn

Another revelation I am certain all will be excited to learn, and make me the envy of all DIY owners who prefer maximum punishment!

After lunch with WF758, the very next day I had a lovely drive in the C126. Sadly, the air inside was hotter than the air outside. Thinking I needed a can of refrigerant (yes this was properly converted to R134 back in 2012 and has worked flawlessly) I proceeded to corner parts store for the grab. Following the gauge, I proceeded to empty the contents and voila, compressor kicked in. Removed and reseated KLIMA relay but no Aux fan. Second can gave me the Aux fan, but I noticed gauge pressure was just slightly higher than before.... stopped filling, Aux fan came on and I drove the 3 miles back home. Later I had to run out, so hopped into the recharged C126, turned her on (great new starter) and the AC kicked on with a huge blast of Band-Aid box aroma. Knowing I just recharged the system, I thought nothing of it until I backed out a car length. I saw a nice dinner-plate size wet spot on the ground of bright green fluid. I knew it instantly - I had a leak of refrigerant. Based on the location and despite my emotional denials, I concluded that my leak originated from the evaporation drains and that was confirmed by the dripping green slime from the transmission support frame. So regardless of the O ring failure at the evaporator core or the evaporator core itself (both are 26 years old) I will need to remove the dash to inspect. Since I am there, I will be performing the following:

Replace Expansion valve and O rings
Replace Evaporator Core and O rings
Replace 3 vacuum actuators I did not replace in 2012 when I replaced ruptured actuators
Replace all elbows and vacuum connections under the dash (I didn't do this in 2012)

Parts coming from MB, FCP Euro and AutohausAZ. The best price for each component, and OE or OEM units, nothing funky as this is the last time I will remove the C126 dash!

Approximate parts cost is $285, and 20-30 hours cumulative labor in lovely south Texas heat!

Contemplating the wisdom of sending my wood off to be refurbished (this is not 100%)
