    Nice job, Lowman.
You probably did, but did you check for rust under this part? (Don’t know the name in English)

    IMG_4534.jpgIMG_4537.jpg

Had to make this rust-free on my car.

Thank you soo much for kind words.Yes i did inspect that panel also..i did find some spots here and there..but it was so little..so for now it is left alone. My plan is to do the whole front end at some point.Or...that means...doing the same as i did now..but just proper..but i will have to remove the whole radiator pack to do that..and i do have plans to replace the aux fans and do some more detailing...so i will do this later. But for now it was a "quick " improvement

Yes the radiator pack was in my way, too. I remember I lifted the pack up an inch or so. I managed to give the steel a good treatment that way. Not the whole “Lowman Treatment” but good enough for my standards.
    Keep up the good work!

Slampanel is indeed the correct "slang" for that panel i reckon...it derives from when "slamming the hood" shut...i guess

thank you so much again i say bit by bit..and we are all getting there at some point I was happy that i finally got to inspect the parts shown in these pics...devastated finding the front end of the framrails beeing rusty...but as i said in the video...the panels where still solid..but if left alone for a couple of years..and it would have resulted in rust holes..so ...very important to do stuff like this on these old cars..
I will keep up the work for sure..and i hope you will too Happy new years by the way

Lowman you are the man! Your work is amazing as usual. I have pretty similar situation now - the whole front part stripped and I found rust in similar places... Quick question - what is the purpose of the black sponges I marked with red arrow? To me they only retain water and make this place prone to rust... I was planning on skipping them unless they serve some special purpose? Second question - how is the water hose attached to the SLS tank bracket (green circle)? Is this some sort of U style clamp? I'm anal about stock correct details and my car has zip ties all over that place... It makes me crazy. Can you share any more photos of this area and maybe the lower horn if you have any.

Indeed ... lowmania is a very real thing on this forum. It lives.

    lowmania (noun)
    lo·ma·nia \ ˈlō-mā-nē-ə \

    Definition of lowmania
1: excitement and elevation of mood manifested by hyperactive and anal cleaning, refurbishment and detailing of decades-old Mercedes-Benz parts to a condition as good as or better than when the car left the factory

// I experienced a serious bout of lowmania last night when working on my 500E.

2 a: an excessive enthusiasm for cleaning and detailing Mercedes-Benz automotive parts, exclusively found only in the western coastal (North Sea) region of Norway

2 b : a Mercedes-Benz automobile that is the object of such anal and peculiar enthusiasm

i spoke briefly about these sponges in the video...i know the videos are tedious-.-but i did mention my thoughts about the sponges at some point in the video.
I do reckon them as a direct cause for the rusty area----as i see them as moisture traps...BUT...they are there for a reason i reckon. They seem to function as a part to avoid air and dust floating all around that area..and also as a "dampening" part ...the headlight plastic insert "rests" on this sponge part...so it is a mix of two things i think.

Hmm...the water hose..it is not fastened to the sls reservoar ..it is fastend with a C plastic clip...that is fastened to the frame rail..I hope that helps Maybe i can find the partsnumber..but i cant promise anything....

Thank you again for kind words...im not doing perfect work..but my goal is to make it as good as i can with the knowledge and money i have..and also with the help of all others. There is always stuff to learn

If you could find a part number for that C style clamp - it would be great. The sponges - I thought they are a sort of a cushion for the reflector plastic cowl but are they really needed? Isn't it a little overengineering? I'm still leaning towards removing them from my car and have this place rust free in the future. On a side note - I tried to locate them in EPS but failed - what's the part number if anybody have it in hand?

yes..that is what i meant..they are also in addition to it beeing somewhat of a "dust trap"preventing dust from floating everywhere....they are most likely there to dampen sound,,and cushion the plastic insert for the headlight...
I put mine back on...i just had to..eventhough the left hand side one was in abit poorer condition...i still mounted it back on.I think it will be fine...i reckon it will take another 25 years before it gets as bad as it was.in a way
Ill try and find the parts numbers for you mister

I have looked around for a couple of hours on the epc /partscatalogue..for the fastening clamp and sponge..but i cannot find it AT ALL.
I will take of the clamp and see if i can see a partsnumber on it..hopefully tomorrow...
The sponges i cannot find either..even when looking practically everywhere for it on the parts catalogue...
but i will try some more.By the way..the new "epc" sucks friggin bigtime.hehe hate it

And this is my latest work, and i dont care if some of you..or all of you dont like it.I do I always loved this little "Japan mod" detail So i finally got around sourcing one.
I wetsanded the ashtray wood before continuing on polishing it up to make it shine before adding the sticker.

    Hi Lowman,

How did the panel look after the sanding? I would have thought 1500 dry sanding is too harsh.

    hey mister.
Im sorry i forgot to mention that...cause you are right in your assumption.BUT i pulled it off.BUT sanding should be ended with at least 2000grit if im not mistaken.Cause there were some "scratches...left afterwards....from the sanding that is....but i got to polish it a couple of times to get rid of the sanding scratches.

so yes..1500 is a tad to harsh..but it can be done ..

Yeah that clamp is interesting, I changed the radiator hose last year and it was held with a wide zip tie that I had to cut. Keep us updated Lowman.

    Re: OWNER - lowman (Norge)

    Darek U
Here is some info for you...nothing new im afraid. There was no partsnumber on the clamp.I decided to take off the whole bracket..cause it was in need of a little cleaning anyways..so thank you Laughs

But unfortunatly..no partsnumber to be found. But i will still look around for you.
I do have a little feeling that it "might" come with the metal bracket for the SLS reservoar..eventhough mercedes usually do not do it this way...i feel often they sell all parts as separate..eventhough it should "come "as one part...if you know what i mean. The reason i think it "may" come with the bracket..is that the press pin holding the clamp to the metalbracket..did not want to come out at all...it seems like its melted shut...in a way...
I have also put one of my friends on the task of finding this clamp.or a clamp you can use at least.
Here is some pics of the whole deal

I also got a cup of coffee before i got to work

When i saw this...you know i just had to clean it up Cant have it like that

    Better

    Ohh yeah

Here you can see the clamp presspin in the middle..and you can see it is almost like "welded shut" ..i could not separate it no matter how hard i tried.

Thank you again for all your efforts. At least your bracket is clean now I just sand blasted mine and powder coated black. The clamp - well, I will have to live with zip tie style fitting. I'll make it somehow...
BTW this sort of fastening (press in pin style) looks to me identical to some '80 Porsche style fittings. If you want to remove it you have to press the pin from the bottom out, not inside in. Unless you have already tried this way...

I wetsanded the ashtray wood before continuing on polishing it up to make it shine before adding the sticker.
Really nice work! May I ask where did you get the sticker? Ebay?
