Never heard of them. But $400 to fix an old 10-discer? Gotta ask... why?

I like CD's too... the 1432 system sounds pretty darn good with a CD source. But the 10-disc Silverstone changer is just a lemon. Save yourself a lot of time and hassle and convert to the later 6-disc changer, which is more robust.

Dan wrote up everything you need to know for the conversion and posted it here:

I love the old 10 disc Silverstones, and I've never had any trouble with the at least 4 that I have owned and heavily used, but the 6 disc Alpine conversion did prove to be way more robust and skip resistant in the hands of customers over the years. Indeed, if we had intractable skip complaints in a 129 or 124.036 before '92, the remedy was to convert it to the 6 disc as was installed from '93 on...

    A bit off-topic, sorry.

I have a CD changer in one of my cars, but I'm not focused on car audio so I just wonder if it is proper quality?

    Thanks

I concur. Fortunately I stumbled across a NOS Silverstone on eBay a while back. It came from Poland and took a couple months to get but it was legit.

    You will find them eventually.

I guess I should try eBay, I generally don't go on there much anymore tho....I might have to drive down to Becker in NJ and beg them to fix mine and my buddies units.

I need to get some special tiny star screwdrivers first...I tried to open mine up this weekend but didn't have them. Maybe one of the blue sliders broke off and the unit can't spit out a CD and is hung up (?)

Just set up some eBay searches (worldwide) for Becker, Becker Silverstone, Etc. with email notification if anything pops up.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I tried that initially when I sent them every component out of my car to be refurbished. They would not even touch it no matter how much I pleaded with them. Apparently the problem is that they no longer have any parts for them and they can't get them anymore. Bummer...

You know I wonder if anyone has ever tried dissecting any of the older Sony 10 disc changers to see if they could cannibalize one for the parts they need? Or even just pull the internals out all together and more or less install them in the Becker Silverstone enclosure. I mean it would probably be a PITA but you would sure think they have to be damn near the same and there are a number of those available on eBay:

Here is one that is even branded "Ford Audio System"

Re: Anyone have experience with these folks for a 10-disc changer repair

    Re-visit Dec 2017:

It seems that the CD cartridge has a broken blue 'tooth' on mine; you know, the blue slider parts/pieces that the unit uses to push in and out each of the CDs. I was shaking the fukker in anger the other day and a little blue piece rattles out of it.

So, I'm looking to just open up the unit and see if I can remove the cartridge (I have another one that is intact)but I don't have any tools to use on the odd case screws it has....anyone know where to find the correct tool for those babies? My local stereo shop was of no help (prolly b/c my car isn't a Honda and I don't need a trunk full of woofers)

I have a feeling this is the only issue with my changer (now, actually BTDT before but I was able to get the CD cassette out ). Really would like to avoid sending it down to Becker's for $450 just to have them pop the busted CD cassette out.

WTF? The small screws holding the covers are all one-way security ones. Is this right?
